Book Sealant Stresses in Structural Glazing

Download or read book Sealant Stresses in Structural Glazing written by GD. Chou and published by . This book was released on 1990 with total page 20 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Silicone sealants are used to structurally connect the glass plates of an insulating glass (IG) unit and they are used between the IG unit and the supporting mullion. Thus, the sealants become an integral part of the overall glazing system. Design engineers have to compute stresses and deformations of the glass plates as well as the forces in the sealants when the overall system is subjected to lateral pressures such as wind. By use of von Karman' s nonlinear theory of plates and Boyle's law of ideal gas, the complex interaction between the plates, the air trapped inside the IG unit, and the elastic behavior of the sealants is modelled mathematically. Some numerical examples are shown as illustrations.

Book Stress Redistribution in Structural Glazing Joints

Download or read book Stress Redistribution in Structural Glazing Joints written by K. Chang and published by . This book was released on 1992 with total page 9 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This paper examines the behavior of structural sealant glazing joints loaded to failure. Experimental data are presented from a beam analog for a structural sealant glazed window edge. Analytical results are given for a typical structural sealant glazed unit. The characteristic, service load level, "double-hump" stress and elongation pattern along the glass edge was simulated by a tee-beam specimen with the stem and flange joined by a silicone bead. Point loads were used to produce a double-hump elongation pattern. The results clearly showed the ability of a structural sealant joint to redistribute stresses along its length when loaded to failure. A finite element analysis was made of stress redistribution along the edges of a structural sealant glazed unit under negative wind overloading, approximating a failure condition in the sealant joint. The model included a full stress range, combined tension and shear model for the joints and geometric nonlinearity in the glass. Transverse shear deformations of the joint, due to geometric nonlinearity, were found to have a significant effect on the tensile response of the joint. As a result, the extensive redistribution of tensile stresses seen in the tee-beam specimen did not develop. Instead, only a partial spreading of the double-hump pattern was seen. The implications of the research results are discussed.

Book Evaluation of the Structural Sealant for Use in a Four Sided Structural Sealant Glazing Curtain Wall System for a Hospital Building

Download or read book Evaluation of the Structural Sealant for Use in a Four Sided Structural Sealant Glazing Curtain Wall System for a Hospital Building written by A. M. Memari and published by . This book was released on 2012 with total page 24 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Cathedral Hill Hospital (the California Pacific Medical Center) is a 15-story building designed to be constructed in downtown San Francisco. The curtain-wall system for this building is primarily of unitized design employing a four-sided structural sealant glazing (SSG) system. This paper initially introduces the building and its curtain-wall design. Next, the summary of the results of full-scale racking tests on stick-built mockups of the curtain-wall system developed to evaluate the structural sealant performance are presented. Stick-built mockup, instead of unitized system, was chosen to initially evaluate the behavior of sealants under racking conditions. The mockups were designed to determine the behavior of the glass, framing, connections, and more importantly, the structural silicone under racking displacements following the AAMA 501.6 protocol. The test results (stress-strain relationships) on the structural sealant to determine tensile adhesion properties at selected temperatures and UV exposures are discussed and comparisons to the finite-element analysis results are presented. The wind load and seismic design of the sealants, including the finite-element modeling and analysis of a typical panel to evaluate the stresses in the structural seal-ants, are presented as well. The allowable stress issue in structural sealants for seismic design of four-sided SSG systems is discussed in light of the new information generated for this project.

Book Shear Component of a Structural Sealant Glazing Joint

Download or read book Shear Component of a Structural Sealant Glazing Joint written by JM. Klosowski and published by . This book was released on 1992 with total page 9 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Thermal change loads in structural glazing should be of great concern to all and are every bit as important as the usually quoted tension loads imposed from the wind. Strong winds are an infrequent event in most areas of the country and the maximum wind load is approached infrequently. Thermal changes are daily events, and large thermal changes happen often. This paper discusses the proper way to calculate the forces on the sealant from thermal change and proper design considerations to accommodate the expected thermal changes.
