Book excerpt: On the Arctic ice, a mother harp seal gives birth to her pup. Camouflaged against the ice by its white fur, the helpless pup sticks close to mom, feeding on her rich milk. So begins the life of a harp seal pup. In this coming-of-age introduction to these adorable marine mammals, readers will learn that after just two weeks, the mother seal abandons her pup and returns to the sea. The little pup waits alone on the ice for its white baby coat to be replaced by gray fur, and then, at just a few weeks old, it dives into the freezing sea to find its own food and begin its ocean-dwelling life. The colorful interior spreads and gorgeous photos of fluffy, white seal pups are sure to delight emergent readers.
Download or read book Mother Shock written by Andrea J. Buchanan and published by Seal Press. This book was released on 2009-03-13 with total page 258 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: According to Andrea Buchanan, "Mother shock" is the state in which many new parents exist during those first confusing, chaotic and often comical years of parenting. It is the clash between expectation and result, theory and reality. It is the twilight zone of 24-hour-a-day living; where life is no longer neatly divided into day and night; the triple-impact of hormonal imbalance, sleep deprivation, and physical exhaustion. It is the stress of trying to acclimate quickly to the immediacy of mothering; a new conception of oneself, one’s role in the family and in the world; a fearful new level of responsibility, and a new delegation of domestic duties. In this much-needed and delightfully funny collection of essays, Buchanan shares the insight she gains as she moves through the stages of mother shock. From "Fear of the Double Stroller" and "Confessions of a Bottle Feeder" to "I’m an Idiot" and "Everything I Needed to Know I Learned in Playgroup," Buchanan details the unimaginably difficult and unbelievably rewarding process of becoming a mother.

Book excerpt: We train for war and fight to win. Mental toughness is a steadfast requirement to become a SEAL. Like his teammates, Aidan Mixx is ferocious in this quality. No one knows he uses one night stands, dating app hook-ups, and a swaggering, lewd, persona to cover his haunting weakness. Orders to the Bronze Bay, Florida, SEAL base is a change of scenery and pace. Slowing down just enough to realize not only is sleeping around in a small town more difficult when everyone knows each other, but he might be ready to settle down with one woman. If she's up for the challenge. Magnolia Sager lost the only man she has ever loved to his barely-legal secretary. To make matters worse, their teenaged daughter was the one to catch her father in the affair. Mentally battered and bruised, they flee to Bronze Bay for a fresh start. The antique store keeps Magnolia busy, and the very last thing on her mind is love. She is hesitant when her best friend suggests healing old wounds and moving on by using an app to date casually. Meeting a man who makes her weak in the knees is surprising. Wanting to continue dating him is shocking. Falling for him is insanity. Loving him, impossible. What would you sacrifice for something you wanted? Something that was dear to you? A little? Just enough? Or everything? Would you burn it all down to the ground and steal that which you covet most?

Download or read book People Marine Mammal Interactions written by Andrew Butterworth and published by Frontiers Media SA. This book was released on 2017-08-15 with total page 111 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Our relationships with marine mammals are complex. We have used them as resources, and in some places this remains the case; viewed them as competitors and culled them (again ongoing in some localities); been so captivated and intrigued by them that we have taken them into captivity for our entertainment; and developed a lucrative eco-tourism activity focused on them in many nations. When we first envisaged this special topic, we had two overarching aims: Firstly, we hoped to generate critical evaluation of some of our relationships with these animals. Secondly, we hoped to attract knowledgeable commentators and experts who might not traditionally publish in the peer-reviewed literature. We were also asking ourselves a question about what responsibility mankind might have to marine mammals, on our rapidly changing planet? The answer to the question; can, or should, humans have responsibility for the lives of marine mammals when they are affected by our activities? - is, in our opinion, ‘yes’ – and the logical progression from this question is to direct research and effort to understand and optimise the actions, reactions and responses that mankind may be able to take. We hope that the papers in this special issue bring some illumination to a small selection of topics under this much wider topic area, and prove to be informative and stimulating.
Download or read book Exploding the Reading written by David Booth and published by Pembroke Publishers Limited. This book was released on 2014-11-05 with total page 158 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: One 200-year-old folk tale, 30 teachers, and 1,000 students. Ride along with literacy guru David Booth as he takes the same story to a wide variety of classrooms, from kindergarten all the way through grade 12, and be amazed by the learning generated. David argues that "it takes two to read a book". He reasons that sharing responses and bouncing ideas off others guides students to deeper thinking, and challenges them to reconsider their views and increase their understanding. This intriguing book also shows teachers how to help students discover the world outside the text: the origins, connections, place, values, and the different perceptions that readers have. It illustrates ways to transpose that original text into other forms that let students look at the text with different eyes, to ponder what might have been, to challenge what they read, and to add their new learning to the construct of the world. Throughout the book, authentic student samples and actual transcripts present students experiencing the featured story in a multitude of ways -- from poems and retellings, to visuals and arts, to conversation and blogs -- that will "explode" your definitions of comprehension, response, and engagement, and have you looking at classroom literacy in a whole new way!
