Book excerpt: Seahorses are an exceptional and fascinating fish that live in coastal areas around most of the world. Only a few years ago keeping seahorses was not widely encouraged, due mainly to the difficulty in feeding wild caught specimens as they would not readily take frozen food. The supply of live food was often unpredictable and of uncertain quality, which meant keeping seahorses alive could be very challenging. Wild caught seahorses, being more used to hunting natural live food in the wild, knew nothing about dead, frozen foods! However, more recently, keeping seahorse in an aquarium has been made easier due to widespread captive breeding which has played an enormous role in keeping seahorses at home. As many species are now more commonly raised from fry in an aquarium, they are subsequently weaned on to and then reared on frozen foods from only a few weeks old. This has made it possible for you to set up a successful seahorse aquarium at home and even breed them if you want to. All it takes is the right equipment along with some sound advice to set you on the path to success. This book contains all you need to know to get you started in this fascinating and rewarding hobby. From buying the equipment and setting it up, buying your first seahorses, to feeding, routine maintenance, dealing with ailments, and breeding them, it is all in this one book. A complete guide aimed at the beginner to introduce you to these beautiful creatures, it is all covered, step-by-step. I explain in detail, with lots of photographs, the equipment needed and how to set it up correctly to provide the perfect environment for your seahorses. As a beginner's guide, it is written in an easy to understand format without the need for technical or complicated jargon, covering not only the basics but also the more important points you need to know for their health and well-being. I have included a chapter on breeding seahorses because several of the species will breed quite readily in the aquarium if provided with the right conditions. It is therefore important to understand something about the breeding process and how to successfully raise the fry - should you decide to give it a try.For convenience, the book is in two parts; Part 1 covers all aspects of the essential equipment and setting it all up, along with advice and recommended on aquarium sizes and filters etc. Part 2. Focuses more on the seahorses themselves and their general care in your aquarium as well as other fish and critters you can keep with them. This includes reference to seahorse friendly fish and corals as well as some well-known seahorse enemies. Breeding is also covered in Part 2 and is actually the longest chapter in the book! There is further information relating to the near desperate plight of the seahorse in the wild, which could become extinct in the next 20 to 30 years in some parts of the World, unless major changes are brought into effect - fast! Their fight for survival is being championed by two charitable organisations from the UK and Ireland, full information and contact details are included. Fully illustrated with over 165 colour photographs and diagrams detailing exactly how to care for your seahorses. For anyone interested in these fascinating creatures and how to keep them, this book is a 'must- have.'

Book Breeding Raising Seahorses

Download or read book Breeding Raising Seahorses written by Mike French and published by Independently Published. This book was released on 2023-12-13 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Perhaps you already have some seahorses and you are now interested in taking the next step and trying your hand at breeding them and raising them to an adult stage. Perhaps you have been trying to breed them for some time but they are not feeling the love! Or secondly, you have just looked in your aquarium and noticed for the first time how swollen the males' pouch has become, which indicates he's carrying fry. Or worse still, you've just noticed your aquarium has dozens of tiny but perfectly formed baby seahorses swirling around in the water flow that you had not expected! Whatever the reason applies in your case you will find the help and advice you need within these pages to successfully raise your baby seahorse from birth to adult. Breeding seahorses is not usually a problem, (especially with Dwarf Seashores) as they are often referred to as the 'rabbits of the sea' - if you know anything at all about rabbits, you will understand the point I'm making. However, the difficulty comes with raising all those babies, that's when the hard work really starts - it's almost a full-time job! In this book I will show you exactly how to do that, from birth and setting up a nursery tank to feeding them and right through to weaning them off of their baby food and on to a more convenient frozen food that you are already feeding the adults on. These are tried and tested methods that work really well in a home aquarium set up. I have also included a chapter relating to breeding Dwarf Seahorses but as their needs are so much easier it is likely the shortest chapter in the book! At the time of writing Dwarf Seahorses were not available in the UK. However, in late 2023 several breeders were trying to import them into the UK and recommence a breeding programme so that might be good news for UK enthusiasts. Much of what is written here is also applicable to dwarf seahorses, with the exception of nursery tanks - dwarf fry don't need them, they stay in the aquarium with adults! For the purpose of this book, I have to assume you are not a complete beginner and you have been keeping seahorses or Dwarf seahorses for some time, successfully and without any issues in well set up and healthy aquarium environment.

Book excerpt: An accessible, authoritative look at seahorses, their evolution, biology, habitat, and behavior. Absolutely captivating creatures, seahorses seem like a product of myth and imagination rather than of nature. They are small, elusive, and are named for their heads, which are shaped like miniature ponies with tiny snouts. They swim slowly upright by rapidly fanning their delicate dorsal fin, coil their tails to anchor themselves in a drift, and spend days in a dancing courtship. Afterward, it is the male who carries the female’s eggs in his pouch and hatches the young. Seahorses are found worldwide, and they are highly sensitive to environmental destruction and disturbance, making them the flagship species for shallow-water habitat conservation. They are as ecologically important as they are beautiful. Seahorses celebrates the remarkable variety of seahorse species as well as their exquisiteness. Fifty-seven species, including seadragons and pipefish, are presented in lush, life-size photographs alongside descriptive drawings, and each entry includes detailed and up-to-date information on natural history and conservation. Sara Lourie, a foremost expert on seahorse taxonomy, presents captivating stories of species that range from less than an inch to over a foot in height, while highlighting recent discoveries and ecological concerns. Accessibly written, but comprehensive in scope, this book will be a stunning and invaluable reference on seahorse evolution, biology, habitat, and behavior. Masters of camouflage and rarely seen, seahorses continue to be a fascinating subject of active research. This visually rich and informative book is certain to become the authoritative guide to these charming and unusual wonders of the sea, beloved at aquariums the world over. Praise for Seahorses “This guide covers every one of the 42 known species of seahorses, plus 15 additional relatives, including the seadragon. In addition to beautiful color photographs of all but the rarest species, the descriptions nicely summarize what is known about the distribution, reproduction, and identifying characters of each. The really striking feature, however, is an elegantly simple one: inclusion of a life-sized shadow/silhouette of each species. It is rather astounding to see that some of the pygmy seahorses are literally no larger than the average housefly! . . . Highly recommended.” —Choice
