Book The Stolen Dream

Download or read book The Stolen Dream written by John Devaney and published by Lulu.com. This book was released on 2019-07-24 with total page 630 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The book examines a period when football underwent a seismic and ineradicable change brought about by the determination of the Victorian Football League to wrest control of the game's development and destiny from the various state controlling bodies and the Australian Football Council. Whereas the VFL had initially been the first among equals, it gradually assumed the role of the sole and undisputed guardian of the code. The AFC, once football's ostensible national controlling body, became an irrelevance. Instead of a national sport with a national remit we ended up with an expanded VFL with a majority of Victorian member clubs supplemented by a token sprinkling of teams from interstate. Such teams were in most cases created from scratch and could in no way be said to derive directly from the states? unique and distinctive football traditions and culture. For some, it was a brave new world, but evolution does not inevitably entail improvement.

Book The Cheerful Scapegoat

  • Author : Wayne Koestenbaum
  • Publisher : MIT Press
  • Release : 2021-03-23
  • ISBN : 1635901448
  • Pages : 233 pages

Download or read book The Cheerful Scapegoat written by Wayne Koestenbaum and published by MIT Press. This book was released on 2021-03-23 with total page 233 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Wayne Koestenbaum's first book of short fiction: a collection of whimsical, surreal, baroque, ribald, and heartbreaking fables. In his first book of short fiction--a collection of whimsical, surreal, baroque, ribald, and heartbreaking fables--Wayne Koestenbaum takes the gloom and melancholy of our own terrifying political moment and finds subversive solace by overturning the customary protocols of tale-telling. Characters and narrators wander into strange locales; the difference between action and thinking, between reality and dream, grows moot in a heightened yet burlesque manner. The activities in The Cheerful Scapegoat are a cross between a comedy of manners and a Sadean orgy. Language has its own desires: figures of speech carry an erotic charge that straddles the line between slapstick and vertigo. Punishment hangs over every dialogue--but in the fable-world of The Cheerful Scapegoat, abjection comes with an undertaste of contentment. The tchotchkes of queer culture--codes and signifiers--get scrambled together in these stories and then blown up into an improbable soufflé. Koestenbaum's fables travel in circles, slipping away from their original point and leading the reader to a paradisiacal suspension of fixed categories. Intensified sentences and curlicue narratives scheme together mesmerically to convince the reader to abandon old ways of thinking and to take on a commitment to the polymorphous, the wandering, the tangential. Koestenbaum's fables--emergency bulletins uttered in a perverse vernacular of syntactic pirouettes--alert us to the necessity of pushing language into new contortions of exactitude and ecstatic excess.

Book On the Pond

    Book Details:
  • Author : Ted Rulseh
  • Publisher : The Guest Cottage, Inc.
  • Release : 2003
  • ISBN : 9781930596214
  • Pages : 180 pages

Download or read book On the Pond written by Ted Rulseh and published by The Guest Cottage, Inc.. This book was released on 2003 with total page 180 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In this love letter disguised as an anthology, author Ted Rulseh expresses his deep affinity with that singular body of water we call Lake Michigan. In a collection of 107 seasonally grouped essays that first appeared in his regular column in the Manitowoc Herald Times Reporter, his easy prose is at once rich and satisfyingly restrained. While he waxes nearly poetic in some passages, he never allows his writing to wallow in cheap sentimentality. Instead, he lets the life of the Lake, his hometown of Two Rivers, and adjoining lakeshore communities speak for itself, with quietly compelling results. On the Pond evokes a sense of place strong enough to take a rightful position alongside the works of the most celebrated American writers. With the eye of a writer, the soul of an outdoorsman, and the heart of a small-town boy. Ted Rulseh brings home the essence of life next to one of the most fabled of the Great Lakes, in all its many moods. From the sudden and unpredictable storms of autumn and shrieking winter gales to the tentative warmth of spring and summer's full glory, Lake Michigan is revealed as an alternately soothing and tempestuous -- but never dull -- neighbor. A pleasing chronicle of small-town life that manages to hang on amid the relentless march of time and technology, this book is also a keenly observant naturalist's journal. Let it take you away for a while to a place where gulls wheel above steel-gray waves, and dune walkers pull their jackets a little tighter. Book jacket.
