Book Seacoast Stress Corrosion Cracking of Aluminum Alloys

Download or read book Seacoast Stress Corrosion Cracking of Aluminum Alloys written by National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA) and published by Createspace Independent Publishing Platform. This book was released on 2018-08-06 with total page 30 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The stress corrosion cracking resistance of high strength, wrought aluminum alloys in a seacoast atmosphere was investigated and the results were compared with those obtained in laboratory tests. Round tensile specimens taken from the short transverse grain direction of aluminum plate and stressed up to 100 percent of their yield strengths were exposed to the seacoast and to alternate immersion in salt water and synthetic seawater. Maximum exposure periods of one year at the seacoast, 0.3 or 0.7 of a month for alternate immersion in salt water, and three months for synthetic seawater were indicated for aluminum alloys to avoid false indications of stress corrosion cracking failure resulting from pitting. Correlation of the results was very good among the three test media using the selected exposure periods. It is concluded that either of the laboratory test media is suitable for evaluating the stress corrosion cracking performance of aluminum alloys in seacoast atmosphere. Humphries, T. Book Stress corrosion Cracking of Aluminum Alloys

Download or read book Stress corrosion Cracking of Aluminum Alloys written by F. H. Haynie and published by . This book was released on 1966 with total page 52 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This report deals with the stress-corrosion cracking of aluminum alloys, and it represents an effort by DMIC to expand on the information contained in DMIC Memorandum 202, 'Stress-Corrosion Cracking of Aluminum Alloys', dated February 15, 1965. DMIC Report 228 begins by presenting a comprehensive definition of stress-corrosion cracking. This is followed by sections dealing with (1) the historical development and growth in awareness of the problem, (2) the mechanisms involved, and (3) the theory of stress-corrosion cracking. A section on experimental techniques is presented. These techniques include test methods used to determine the susceptibility of alloys to stress-corrosion cracking, as well as more refined methods of studying the fundamental mechanisms of the problem. Different evaluation methods, applicable to obtaining the different objectives of stress-corrosion testing, are also presented. All of the foregoing serve as background to the sections on stress-corrosion-cracking behavior of aluminum alloys and preventive measures. (Author).

Book Evaluating Stress Corrosion Crack Propagation Rates in High Strength Aluminum Alloys with Bolt Loaded Precracked Double Cantilever Beam Specimens

Download or read book Evaluating Stress Corrosion Crack Propagation Rates in High Strength Aluminum Alloys with Bolt Loaded Precracked Double Cantilever Beam Specimens written by JW. Coursen and published by . This book was released on 1976 with total page 14 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Propagation rates for stress-corrosion cracking (SCC) of high-strength aluminum alloys determined with mechanically precracked double-cantilever-beam (DCB) specimens provide a quantitative means of comparing the resistance to SCC of alloys and tempers. For relatively resistant materials however, the rates can be markedly influenced by test conditions and interpretation of the crack-growth data. This paper describes a relatively simple, accelerated testing method for determining SCC velocities that rank the SCC behavior of aluminum alloys in the same order as SCC propagation rates in a seacoast or industrial atmosphere. Practical difficulties associated with this test method, however, warrant further evaluation to justify this as a primary method of testing.

Book Aluminum Lithium Alloys

Download or read book Aluminum Lithium Alloys written by N.J.H. Holroyd and published by Elsevier Inc. Chapters. This book was released on 2013-09-20 with total page 53 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Industrial interest in wrought heat-treatable aluminium-lithium (Al–Li) based alloys dates back to around 1919 in Germany. However the exploitation of these alloys has historically been limited by their mechanical property anisotropy and concerns over their localized corrosion resistance and temperature stability. Recently, in the last ten years, alloy and process development has resulted in alloy compositions and thermomechanical treatments that potentially can overcome these issues. To put these developments in perspective we have reviewed the corrosion characteristics of first, second and third generation alloys with an emphasis on localized corrosion (intergranular and exfoliation) and stress corrosion cracking (SCC). Intergranular corrosion susceptibility of Al–Li–Cu and Al–Li–Cu–Mg alloys increases with copper content, and the depth of attack increases with ageing, i.e. UAPA~30 mm) further analysis of corrosion test results is required.

Standard /reference data on environmental properties, including corrosion and stress corrosion, are mandatory for the qualification and certification of materials for aerospace vehicles, and also for the design of actual structures and components. Recommendations for further testing and evaluation are given at appropriate points in the text. The book concludes with a summary of the main topics.
