Book Dynamically Installed Anchors for Floating Offshore Structures

Download or read book Dynamically Installed Anchors for Floating Offshore Structures written by Mark Damian Richardson and published by . This book was released on 2008 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The gradual depletion of shallow water hydrocarbon deposits has forced the offshore oil and gas industry to develop reserves in deeper waters. Dynamically installed anchors have been proposed as a cost-effective anchoring solution for floating offshore structures in deep water environments. The rocket or torpedo shaped anchor is released from a designated drop height above the seafloor and allowed to penetrate the seabed via the kinetic energy gained during free-fall and the anchor s self weight. Dynamic anchors can be deployed in any water depth and the relatively simple fabrication and installation procedures provide a significant cost saving over conventional deepwater anchoring systems. Despite use in a number of offshore applications, information regarding the geotechnical performance of dynamically installed anchors is scarce. Consequently, this research has focused on establishing an extensive test database through the modelling of the dynamic anchor installation process in the geotechnical centrifuge. The tests were aimed at assessing the embedment depth and subsequent dynamic anchor holding capacity under various loading conditions. Analytical design tools, verified against the experimental database, were developed for the prediction of the embedment depth and holding capacity.

Book Seafloor Anchoring for Platforms in the Messina Strait

Download or read book Seafloor Anchoring for Platforms in the Messina Strait written by Antonioluca Manno and published by . This book was released on 2010 with total page 139 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The importance of properly designing and selecting an anchor is key to reliable techniques for floating offshore platforms including power generation from marine currents. Numerous studies have demonstrated how the uplift capacity of embedment anchors is highly dependent on the soil properties and the anchor geometry. This work focuses in detail on the behavior of vertically loaded circular anchors to keep a floating structure stationary in the offshore environment. The main goal of this research was to find and evaluate an alternative to the foundations employed in the M. Eng. 2009/10 offshore project. The initial option consisted of drag embedment anchors and suction anchors as the foundations for the floating structure located in the Messina Strait that carries a horizontal-axis marine current turbine. Examining past theories and tests, and using dimensional analysis, we determined that circular plate anchors of 4.22 m and 2.72 m in diameter represent a good alternative design for the foundations of the front and back floating platforms. These anchors have an embedment depth-to-diameter ratio of 3 and a plate thickness-to-diameter ratio of 3%. Therefore, in comparison to the initial foundation options developed in the M. Eng. project, the solution with circular anchors has the advantage to reduce the overall dimensions of the anchors, reduce the material necessary for their manufacture, minimize the duration and cost of installation, and provide an efficient anchoring system independent of the local current direction.

Book Handbook of Bottom Founded Offshore Structures

Download or read book Handbook of Bottom Founded Offshore Structures written by Jan H. Vugts and published by Eburon Uitgeverij B.V.. This book was released on 2013-12-01 with total page 84 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Offshore Engineering continues to develop and expand rapidly. While in the public eye its focus has shifted towards subsea and floating developments in ever deeper waters, bottom founded structures are still at the industry’s heart. The fixed structure remains its dependable workhorse and even today newly installed fixed structures far outnumber subsea and floating applications. Additionally, the knowledge and technology that have (literally) pushed the boundaries of Offshore Engineering into ever more demanding environments and water depths have been largely pioneered by bottom founded structures. An engineer’s central skill is to develop coherent and balanced models for the problems encountered. Regrettably, due to availability of ever more sophisticated computer applications this expertise is at risk of getting lost, and adopting computer outcomes without truly understanding the models and their limitations is naive, risky and unprofessional. Therefore, every engineer needs fundamental knowledge and understanding of underlying theories and technologies. This Handbook is intended to help offshore engineers acquire and sustain relevant expertise in some notoriously difficult subjects. It attempts to stimulate reflection and critical evaluation of the models used and the strengths and weaknesses of the solutions found. While dealing more specifically with bottom founded structures, the material is generally applicable to offshore structures of all types. The Handbook can be used as a textbook for Master’s students and as a manual and reference guide for practising professionals.

Book Wind Energy Storage and Conversion

Download or read book Wind Energy Storage and Conversion written by Inamuddin and published by John Wiley & Sons. This book was released on 2024-05-23 with total page 199 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book provides a comprehensive guide to the benefits and developments of wind energy, including energy storage and conversion methods, making it a must-read for those interested in sustainable energy. By going through this book, one can learn more about the usefulness of adopting renewable energies, particularly in light of the widespread use of wind-based devices. Here, we present an in-depth presentation of several developments in wind technological systems, focusing on applications and operational approaches. With the depletion of fossil fuel-based energy resources, the development of alternative sources of energy is becoming extremely crucial. Meanwhile, the planet is on the brink of an energy disaster due to the rapidly rising global need for energy. Additionally, the widespread usage of fossil fuel-based energy resources is aggravating global warming and harming the environment. However, there are reliable and eco-friendly substitutes to fossil fuels, for example wind and many other sustainable energies. Considering its low operational costs and easy accessibility, wind is among the most cost-effective and efficient renewable energies. With the increased use of wind energy, the need for storage has become critical. In addition to various storage procedures, fuel cells and batteries are two primary sources of compensation for RE systems. The wind technological system is on the cusp of development, but numerous improvements are required to make this technology overall cost-efficient. In this book, various energy storage and conversion methods for wind power applications are explored. Additionally, this work covers the costs associated with electrical output in wind-powered power plants as well as the financial and environmental plans that describe the installation of wind technology systems.
