Book excerpt: Are You Ready to Master Your Own Life and Craft? You are a creator. With every thought, word, and action, you impact the whole world and manifest new realities. The worlds you bring into being directly reflect your own awareness, personal development, compassion, values, and commitment to every worthwhile endeavor. This book is a field guide to your own personal truths and their very global impact. It offers a step-by-step examination, in no particular order, of one’s work ethic, processes, perceptions, motivations, aspirations, and integrity. This timely guide offers relevant insights as we move into a future where fewer resources will necessitate the use of our greater creativity, innovation, and ethical sensibility, and where, with our global-mindedness, we will be called upon to make heart-centered choices. Within these pages, Mel extends an invitation to join an evolution of mindfulness, where it is each person’s responsibility to know themselves fully, to understand and act upon their inner authority, and to help create a world that is compassionate, healthy, and beautiful. Key Features See What They’re Doing: Features interviews with design managers from top firms that show readers that it isn’t about what’s faster, it’s about what’s best. Get Away from the Screen: Some of today’s most beautiful web sites and digital products started on a whiteboard, or a napkin, a sand table, or from a ball of yarn. This book shows how to bring tactile, real-world media to full online realization with fidelity. Be a Turtle: This book is connected to a community for those who want to slow down, steep ideas, and craft web and mobile sites on time and within budget, while fostering that lost sense of art.

Book Lines That Connect

    Book Details:
  • Author : Graeme Were
  • Publisher : University of Hawaii Press
  • Release : 2010-08-31
  • ISBN : 0824860489
  • Pages : 217 pages

Download or read book Lines That Connect written by Graeme Were and published by University of Hawaii Press. This book was released on 2010-08-31 with total page 217 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Building on historical and contemporary literature in anthropology and art theory, Lines That Connect treats pattern as a material form of thought that provokes connections between disparate things through processes of resemblance, memory, and transformation. Pattern is constantly in a state of motion as it traverses spatial and temporal divides and acts as an endless source for innovation through its inherent transformability. Graeme Were argues that it is the ideas carried by pattern’s relational capacity that allows Pacific islanders to express their links to land, genealogy, and resources in the most economic ways. In doing so, his book is a timely and unique contribution to the analysis of pattern and decorative art in the Pacific amid growing debates in anthropology and art history. This striking and original study brings together objects and photographs, historical literature and contemporary ethnographic case studies to explore pattern in its logical workings. It presents the first-ever analysis of the well-known patterned shell valuable called kapkap as revealed in New Ireland mortuary feasts. Innovative research in the study of Christianity and the Baha’i faithful in the region shows how pattern has been appropriated in new religious communities. Were argues that pattern is used in various guises in performances, church architecture, and funerary images to contrasting effect. He explores the conditions under which pattern facilitates a connecting of old and new ideas and how missionary processes are implicated in this flow. He then considers the mechanisms under which pattern is internalized, paying particular attention to its embeddedness in spatial and numerical thinking. Finally, he examines how pattern carries new materials and technologies, which in turn provide new resources for sustaining old beliefs. Drawing on a multitude of fields (anthropology; art history; Pacific, museum, and religious studies; education; ethnomathematics), Lines That Connect raises key questions about the capacity of pattern across the Pacific to bind and sustain ideas about place, body, and genealogy in the most logical of ways.

Download or read book Voyage of the Turtle written by Carl Safina and published by Henry Holt and Company. This book was released on 2007-04-01 with total page 428 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The story of an ancient sea turtle and what its survival says about our future, from the award-winning writer and naturalist Though nature is indifferent to the struggles of her creatures, the human effect on them is often premeditated. The distressing decline of sea turtles in Pacific waters and their surprising recovery in the Atlantic illuminate what can go both wrong and right from our interventions, and teach us the lessons that can be applied to restore health to the world's oceans and its creatures. As Voyage of the Turtle, Carl Safina's compelling natural history adventure makes clear, the fate of the astonishing leatherback turtle, whose ancestry can be traced back 125 million years, is in our hands. Writing with verve and color, Safina describes how he and his colleagues track giant pelagic turtles across the world's oceans and onto remote beaches of every continent. As scientists apply lessons learned in the Atlantic and Caribbean to other endangered seas, Safina follows leatherback migrations, including a thrilling journey from Monterey, California, to nesting grounds on the most remote beaches of Papua, New Guinea. The only surviving species of its genus, family, and suborder, the leatherback is an evolutionary marvel: a "reptile" that behaves like a warm-blooded dinosaur, an ocean animal able to withstand colder water than most fishes and dive deeper than any whale. In his peerless prose, Safina captures the delicate interaction between these gentle giants and the humans who are finally playing a significant role in their survival. "Magnificent . . . A joyful, hopeful book. Safina gives us ample reasons to be enthralled by this astonishing ancient animal—and ample reasons to care." -- The Los Angeles Times

Book Handbook of Marine Fisheries Conservation and Management

Download or read book Handbook of Marine Fisheries Conservation and Management written by R. Quentin Grafton and published by Oxford University Press. This book was released on 2010-01-21 with total page 785 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This handbook is the most comprehensive and interdisciplinary work on marine conservation and fisheries management ever compiled. It is the first to bridge fisheries and marine conservation issues. Its innovative ideas, detailed case studies, and governance framework provide a global special perspective over time and treat problems in the high seas, community fisheries, industrial fishing, and the many interactions between use and non-use of the oceans. Its policy tools and ideas for overcoming the perennial problems of over fishing, habitat and biodiversity loss address the facts that many marine ecosystems are in decline and plagued by overexploitation due to unsustainable fishing practices. An outstanding feature of the book is the detailed case-studies on conservation practice and fisheries management from around the world. These case studies are combined with 'foundation' chapters that provide an overview of the state of the marine world and innovative and far reaching perspectives about how we can move forward to face present and future challenges. The contributors include the world's leading fisheries scientists, economists, and managers. Ecosystem and incentive-based approaches are described and complemented by tools for cooperative, participatory solutions. Unique themes treated: fisher behavior and incentives for management beyond rights-based approaches; a synthesis of proposed 'solutions'; a framework for understanding and overcoming the critical determinants of the decline in fisheries, degradation of marine ecosystems, and poor socio-economic performance of many fishing communities; models for innovative policy instruments; a plan of action and adoption pathways to promote sustainable fishing practices globally. Collectively, the handbook's many valuable contributions offer a way forward to both understanding and resolving the multifaceted problems facing the world's oceans.
