Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This story of sailing ships has been written primarily for the general reader, in the hope that the sons and daughters of a naval nation, and of an Empire that stretches beyond the seas, may find therein a record of some interest and assistance in enlarging and systematising their ideas on the subject, especially as regards the ships of earlier centuries. I trust that both the yachtsman and sailorman will find in these pages something of the same exiting pleasure which has been mine in tracing the course of the evolutions through which their ships have passed. A well written and beautifully illustrated historical account that starts with the early Egyptian ships from 6000 BC and covers the development of sailing ships until the beginning of the 20th century. Reprint of the original edition from 1909.

Book excerpt: First published in 1910, “Ships, Sea Songs and Shanties” is a vintage collection of traditional sailing songs, collected and published in this volume by W. B. Whall. Originally appearing in the “Nautical Magazine and Yachting Monthly”, the songs come complete with lyrics and sheet music, as well as pictures of various celebrated sailing ships of the time. William Boultbee Whall (1847–1917) was a Master mariner famous for writing this book. He became a member of the Merchant Navy when he was 14 and became acquainted with the songs during his 11 years aboard ships of the East India Companies. In addition to this volume, Whall also wrote a number of books related to practical seamanship and navigation. Many vintage books such as this are increasingly scarce and expensive. We are republishing this volume now in an affordable, modern, high-quality edition complete with specially-commissioned new introduction on folk music.

Book Classic Ships of Islam

Download or read book Classic Ships of Islam written by Dionysius A Agius and published by BRILL. This book was released on 2007-11-30 with total page 529 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book charts the development of Islamic ships and boats in the Western Indian Ocean from the seventh to the early sixteenth century with reference to earlier periods. It utilizes mainly Classical and Medieval Arabic sources with iconographical evidence and archaeological finds. Maritime activities in the region resulted in a cross fertilization, not only of goods but also of ideas and culture which gave an underlying cohesion to the Arabian, Persian and Indian maritime peoples. This study has led to a re-evaluation of that maritime culture, showing that it was predominantly Persian and Indian, with Chinese influence, throughout the Islamic period until the coming of the Portuguese, as reflected in nautical terminology and technology.
