Download or read book Views on Sea Otters in Nuu Chah Nulth Territories British Columbia Enhydra Lutris microform written by Elizabeth Anne Stewart and published by Library and Archives Canada = Bibliothèque et Archives Canada. This book was released on 2006 with total page 226 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Sea otters (Enhydra lutris), a threatened species under Canada's Species at Risk Act, are recovering on west coast Vancouver Island. Data from surveys and semi-structured interviews inform the study about perceptions and experience of two groups of respondents; conservation professionals and Nuu-chah-nulth-aht (people of west coast Vancouver Island) regarding sea otter recovery. Although most participants value sea otters, differences emerge on how many sea otters are enough, how decisions are made and whether an uncontrolled return of sea otters presents a human right issue. Conservation professionals, focus on perceived ecological benefits while many Nuu-chah-nulth participants question the science and focus on an ecosystem-dependent human interface. A diversity of socio-scientific views on biodiversity issues present rich, interdisciplinary learning opportunities for environmental education and communication. Meaningful consultation, validation, participation, dialogue with respect and equality provide opportunities to transform relationship and improve environmental communication and education about sea otter recovery.

Book excerpt: Sea otters once ruled the Pacific Ocean, but the fur trade of the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries brought this predator to near extinction. Today they’re slowly coming back from the brink, and scientists are learning more about their pivotal role as one of nature’s keystone species. This book looks at the history, biology, behavior and uncertain future of sea otters. Author and photojournalist Isabelle Groc takes us into the field: watching sea otter rafts off the British Columbia coast from a kayak, exploring what makes their fur coats so special, understanding how their voracious appetites are helping kelp forests thrive and, ultimately, learning how sea otters are leaving their mark (or paws) on every part of the ecosystem. They might be one of the most adorable creatures in the ocean, but kids will discover how their survival is key to a rich, complex and connected ecosystem.
