Book excerpt: Excerpt from Sea Fights of the Great War: Naval Incidents During the First Nine Months This book, the work of many hands, may perhaps help some of our countrymen to understand how much they owe to the silent service, which, unseen and almost forgotten, is slowly strangling the life out of our enemies. It is not pretended that this is a complete history of the war at sea. In the fever of a gigantic struggle our vision is too close, our judgment perhaps too prejudiced for true history, but we may be later a help to others. Book More Sea Fights of the Great War Including the Battle of Jutland Classic Reprint

Download or read book More Sea Fights of the Great War Including the Battle of Jutland Classic Reprint written by W. L. Wyllie and published by . This book was released on 2015-07-06 with total page 294 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from More Sea Fights, of the Great War, Including the Battle of Jutland This book, like its forerunner, "Sea Fights of the Great War," is again the work of many hands. Naval friends have contributed vital details, giving life and colour to what might otherwise have proved a dull recital of facts. Of the three collaborators whose names appear upon the title-page, one of them, Mr. W. D. Kirkpatrick, served in varying capacities all through the war. His work was highly technical, and he has been able to give many accounts of the inner working of the great fighting ships, with glimpses of the daily life of our gallant sailors. The second, Mr. W. L. Wyllie, R.A., cruised in all types of craft of the Royal Navy, from the largest and newest of the super-Dreadnoughts and battle-cruisers to submarines, "Q" ships and motor launches. He has been chiefly concerned with the portrayal of the war at sea. His pictures have been in almost every case painted on the spot from the actual ships, the guns being specially trained and elevated to the correct position. The third, Mr. Charles Owen, has devoted all his attention to sorting out the fragmentary scraps of information, putting them into proper order, and giving a smoothness to the narrative. We offer our combined efforts to the thoughtful among our fellow-countrymen, in the hope that they may help the men and women of Great Britain to understand how much they owe to the Silent Service, which carried on through four long years of waiting and watching, interspersed with desperate fighting, and finally brought the great German Empire to hopeless ruin. Book The Great War at Sea The Opening Salvos

Download or read book The Great War at Sea The Opening Salvos written by Bob Carruthers and published by Pen and Sword. This book was released on 2015-08-30 with total page 129 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This powerful collection, depicting the events of the Great War at sea, showcases the work of the contemporary combat artists and illustrators from the Great War era. The result is a stunning and vivid graphic record of life and death on the high-seas from 1914-18, as reported to contemporary audiences at a time when the events of the Great War were still unfolding. During the Great War artists and illustrators produced a highly accurate visual record of the fleeting moments the bulky cameras couldn't reproduce. These works form a body ofÊwar reportage that are as valid as the written word. Today, the work of the combat illustrators and the official war artists from the Great War era is overlooked by historians in favour of photographs, but these illustrations are nonetheless important, as they provide a contemporary record of hand-to-hand fighting, trench raids, aerial dogfights, sea battles, desperate last stands, night actions and cavalry charges.

Book Fighting the Great War at Sea

Download or read book Fighting the Great War at Sea written by Norman Friedman and published by Seaforth Publishing. This book was released on 2014-10-22 with total page 1583 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Winner of the John Lyman Book Award for Naval and Maritime Science and Technology. “A compelling and convincing historical analysis of World War I.” —Navy News While the overriding image of the First World War is of the bloody stalemate on the western front, the overall shape of the war arose out of its maritime character. It was essentially a struggle about access to worldwide resources, most clearly seen in Germany’s desperate attempts to counter the American industrial threat, which ultimately drew the United States into the war. This radical new book concentrates on the way in which each side tried to use or deny the sea to the other, and in so doing, describes rapid wartime changes not only in ship and weapons technology but also in the way naval warfare was envisaged and fought. Melding strategic, technical, and tactical aspects, Friedman approaches the First World War from a fresh perspective and demonstrates how its perceived lessons dominated the way navies prepared for the Second World War. “Friedman is a master of the evolution of naval strategy, tactics and technology . . . a rewarding read that will leave many wanting to return again and again just to see what they might have missed the first time.” —Australian Naval Institute “Dr. Friedman’s research credentials are impeccable, and the huge amount of factual detail he has unearthed will be sure to delight many . . . there is nothing comparable in either depth or scope out there, and for this reason, if no other, this book is likely to become a standard work on the naval aspects of the Great War.” —Naval War College Review

Book Decision at Sea

Download or read book Decision at Sea written by Craig L. Symonds and published by Oxford University Press. This book was released on 2006-10-23 with total page 585 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: From thunderous broadsides traded between wooden sailing ships on Lake Erie, to the carrier battles of World War II, to the devastating high-tech action in the Persian Gulf, here is a gripping history of five key battles that defined the evolution of naval warfare--and the course of the American nation. Acclaimed military historian Craig Symonds offers spellbinding narratives of crucial engagements, showing how each battle reveals the transformation of technology and weaponry from one war to the next; how these in turn transformed naval combat; and how each event marked a milestone in American history. - Oliver Hazard Perry's heroic victory at Lake Erie, one of the last great battles of the Age of Sail, which secured the Northwestern frontier for the United States - The brutal Civil War duel between the ironclads Monitor and Virginia, which sounded the death knell for wooden-hulled warships and doomed the Confederacy's hope of besting the Union navy - Commodore Dewey's stunning triumph at Manila Bay in 1898, where the U.S. displayed its "new navy" of steel-hulled ships firing explosive shells and wrested an empire from a fading European power - The hairsbreadth American victory at Midway, where aircraft carriers launched planes against enemies 200 miles away--and where the tide of World War II turned in the space of a few furious minutes - Operation Praying Mantis in the Persian Gulf, where computers, ship-fired missiles, and "smart bombs" not only changed the nature of warfare at sea, but also marked a new era, and a new responsibility, for the United States. Symonds records these encounters in detail so vivid that readers can hear the wind in the rigging and feel the pounding of the guns. Yet he places every battle in a wide perspective, revealing their significance to America's development as it grew from a new Republic on the edge of a threatening frontier to a global superpower. Decision at Sea is a powerful and illuminating look at pivotal moments in the history of the Navy and of the United States. It is also a compelling study of the unchanging demands of leadership at sea, where commanders must make rapid decisions in the heat of battle with lives--and the fate of nations--hanging in the balance.
