Book excerpt: Love's Executioner offers us the humane and extraordinary insight of renowned psychiatrist Irvin D. Yalom into the lives of ten of his patients - and through them into the minds of us all Why was Saul tormented by three unopened letters from Stockholm? What made Thelma spend her whole life raking over a long-past love affair? How did Carlos's macho fantasies help him deal with terminal cancer? In this engrossing book, Irvin Yalom gives detailed and deeply affecting accounts of his work with these and seven other patients. Deep down, all of them were suffering from the basic human anxieties - isolation, fear of death or freedom, a sense of the meaninglessness of life - that none of us can escape completely. And yet, as the case histories make touchingly clear, it is only by facing such anxieties head on that we can hope to come to terms with them and develop. Throughout, Dr Jalom remains refreshingly frank about his own errors and prejudices; his book provides a rare glimpse into the consulting room of a master therapist. Reviews: 'Dr Yalom demonstrates once again that in the right hands, the stuff of therapy has the interest of the richest and most inventive fiction' Eva Hoffman, New York Times 'These remarkably moving and instructive tales of the psychiatric encounter bring the reader into novel territories of the mind - and the landscape is truly unforgettable' Maggie Scarf 'Love's Executioner is one of those rare books that suggests both the mystery and the poetry of the psychotherapeutic process. The best therapists are at least partly poets. With this riveting and beautifully written book, Irvin Yalom has joined their ranks' Erica Jong 'Inspired ... He writes with the narrative wit of O. Henry and the earthy humor of Isaac Bashevis Singer' San Francisco Chronicle 'These stories are wonderful. They make us realize that within every human being lie the pain and the beauty that make life worthwhile' Bernie S. Siegel 'This is an impressive transformation of clinical experience into literature. Dr Yalom's case histories are more gripping than 98 percent of the fiction published today, and he has gone to amazing lengths of honesty to depict himself as a realistic flesh-and-blood character: funny, flawed, perverse, and, above all, understanding' Phillip Lopate 'I loved Love's Executioner. Dr Yalom has learned something that fiction writers learned years ago - that people's mistakes are a lot more interesting than their triumphs' Joanne Greenberg About the author: Irvin D. Yalom is Professor Emeritus of Psychiatry at the Stanford University School of Medicine. As well as an award-winning psychiatrist and psychotherapist, he is an extremely prolific author. His many other works includeThe Gift of Therapy, Staring at the Sun, When Nietzsche Wept, The Theory and Practice of Group Psychiatry,The Schopenhauer Cure, Lying on the Couch, Momma and the Meaning of Life, Existential Psychotherapy, I'm Calling the Police, Inpatient Group Psychotherapy, Every Day Gets a Little Closer and The Spinoza Problem.

Book excerpt: Yes, those nice words help. Yes, those hugs do help. But how can those nice words and hugs keep me from feeling what I feel? When the burden of pain lurks in my heart and weighs me down within the depths of me, where should I turn to get rid of that burden? I do not seek pacification. I do not seek comforting words intersected with your vocal cord-manufactured sounds of compassion. I seek total detachment from my pain. I seek unplugging the experience of pain from my heart. I cry to disentangle that pain from my depths. Do you hear my cry? You don't get it. How can you? The pain is in me. The pain lives inside me. Right here, inside me. Do you get it? Literally, I can feel the weight of pain in my heart. It sits as heavy as a boulder, unmoving, unrelenting. My suffering is an experience locked within my body. It is not some kind of a visitor. It stays there right in between my belly and throat. No amount of your contrived kindness helps in ebbing that persistent experience.

Book Irish Novels 1890 1940

Download or read book Irish Novels 1890 1940 written by John Wilson Foster and published by OUP Oxford. This book was released on 2008-02-21 with total page 528 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Studies of Irish fiction are still scanty in contrast to studies of Irish poetry and drama. Attempting to fill a large critical vacancy, Irish Novels 1890-1940 is a comprehensive survey of popular and minor fiction (mainly novels) published between 1890 and 1922, a crucial period in Irish cultural and political history. Since the bulk of these sixty-odd writers have never been written about, certainly beyond brief mentions, the book opens up for further exploration a literary landscape, hitherto neglected, perhaps even unsuspected. This new landscape should alter the familiar perspectives on Irish literature of the period, first of all by adding genre fiction (science fiction, detective novels, ghost stories, New Woman fiction, and Great War novels) to the Irish syllabus, secondly by demonstrating the immense contribution of women writers to popular and mainstream Irish fiction. Among the popular and prolific female writers discussed are Mrs J.H. Riddell, B.M. Croker, M.E. Francis, Sarah Grand, Katharine Tynan, Ella MacMahon, Katherine Cecil Thurston, W.M. Letts, and Hannah Lynch. Indeed, a critical inference of the survey is that if there is a discernible tradition of the Irish novel, it is largely a female tradition. A substantial postscript surveys novels by Irish women between 1922 and1940 and relates them to the work of their female antecedents. This ground-breaking survey should also alter the familiar perspectives on the Ireland of 1890-1922. Many of the popular works were problem-novels and hence throw light on contemporary thinking and debate on the 'Irish Question'. After the Irish Literary Revival and creation of the Free State, much popular and mainstream fiction became a lost archive, neglected evidence, indeed, of a lost Ireland.

Book Measurement of Love and Intimate Relations

Download or read book Measurement of Love and Intimate Relations written by Oliver C. S. Tzeng and published by Praeger. This book was released on 1993-08-30 with total page 336 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Reading this book will help answer the questions: What is love? Who will fall in love and who will not? Why will some love relationships endure and not others? How can one evaluate and improve a love relationship? Why does one love relationship dissolve more easily than another? How should one handle love dissolution problems? This is the most comprehensive and state-of-the-art work on the measurement of love. It includes descriptions of a theoretical paradigm and two love models, a common mythological framework for theory development and evaluation, an introduction to over 40 theories for love development, maintenance, and dissolution, the integration of research principles and strategies, the compilation of 26 popularly used scales, and illustrations of three empirical research programs in measuring love and intimate relations. The compilation of scales provides information on purpose, function, constructs, psychometric properties, subject response formats, and actual measurement items. This book complements Tzeng's most recent work, Theories of Love Development, Maintenance, and Dissolution.
