Book Young Adult Literature and the Digital World

Download or read book Young Adult Literature and the Digital World written by Jennifer S. Dail and published by Rowman & Littlefield. This book was released on 2018-04-26 with total page 141 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book considers the practical intersection between digital media and young adult texts. In these books, teachers and teacher educators offer practical examples for engaging students with crafting critical responses to young adult literature through digital spaces. It examines how teachers can use these spaces to help students encounter, evaluate, and engage in the world in which they live. Young adult literature offers a vehicle through which students can discuss and explore the world in a more removed manner, while digital media offers a paradigm for helping students craft multimodal responses that extend beyond the traditional literary essay. This intersection asks teachers to consider how they are asking students to interact with the texts they read. It asks them to invite students to enter and contribute to broader conversations through the production of their own texts. This book illustrates pedagogical principles in practice, showing what is possible in literature study in classrooms.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: 'What was merry Christmas to Scrooge? Out upon merry Christmas! What good had it ever done to him?' Ebenezer Scrooge is a bad-tempered skinflint who hates Christmas and all it stands for, but a ghostly visitor foretells three apparitions who will thaw Scrooge's frozen heart. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: One of Charles Dickens’s most fascinating novels, Great Expectations follows the orphan Pip as he leaves behind a childhood of misery and poverty after an anonymous benefactor offers him a chance at the life of a gentleman. From the young Pip’s first terrifying encounter with the convict Magwitch in the gloom of a graveyard to the splendidly morbid set pieces in Miss Havisham’s mansion to the magnificently realized boat chase down the Thames, Great Expectations is filled with the transcendent excitement that Dickens could so abundantly provide. Written in 1860, at the height of his maturity, it also reveals the novelist’s bittersweet understanding of the extent to which our deepest moral dilemmas are born of our own obsessions and illusions. This edition includes Dickens’s original, discarded conclusion to the novel, the 1907 Everyman preface by G. K. Chesterton, and twenty illustrations by F. W. Pailthorpe.

Book A Christmas Carol

Download or read book A Christmas Carol written by Charles Dickens and published by Faber & Faber. This book was released on 2019-11-05 with total page 109 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: 'Bah,'said Scrooge, 'Humbug.' But that was before he was presented with visions of Christmas Past, Christmas Present and Christmas Yet to Come, which gave him a whole new lease of life: 'I am as light as a feather, I am as happy as an angel, I am as merry as a schoolboy. I am as giddy as a drunken man. A merry Christmas to everybody! A happy New Year to all the World!' Old Ebenezer Scrooge is too mean to spend money on coals for the fire in his counting-house, where his clerk Bob Cratchit shivers in the winter cold. Declining an invitation to his nephew Fred's Christmas party, and refusing to give money to charity, he is ready for his usual miserly Christmas in his cold, dingy apartment. But that night, the ghost of his dead partner Jacob Marley appears, in chains, and tells him to expect a visit from three spirits over the next three nights. Sure enough, the Ghost of Christmas Past, Christmas Present and Christmas Yet to Come lead Scrooge through his early years, the meagre Christmas about to happen in Bob Cratchit's family and the jolly Christmas party at his nephew's home, and finally a vision of his own death as a wealthy but avaricious and unhappy miser. Waking from these visions, Scrooge is given a chance to redeem himself, attending Fred's party and lavishing gifts on the Cratchit family and learning that kindness and generosity to others lead to his own happiness.

Book A Christmas Carol Unabriged

Download or read book A Christmas Carol Unabriged written by Charles Dickens and published by BookRix. This book was released on 2019-06-10 with total page 126 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A Christmas Carol is a novella by English author Charles Dickens. It tells the story of bitter old miser Ebenezer Scrooge and his transformation resulting from supernatural visits by Jacob Marley and the Ghosts of Christmases Past, Present and Yet to Come. The novella met with instant success and critical acclaim. The tale begins on a "cold, bleak, biting" Christmas Eve exactly seven years after the death of Scrooge's business partner Jacob Marley. Scrooge, an old miser, is established within the first stave as "a squeezing, wrenching, grasping, scraping, clutching, covetous, old sinner!" He hates Christmas, calling it "humbug"; he refuses his nephew Fred's Christmas dinner invitation, and rudely turns away two gentlemen who seek a donation from him to provide a Christmas dinner for the poor. His only "Christmas gift" is allowing his overworked, underpaid clerk Bob Cratchit Christmas Day off with pay – which he does only to keep with social custom, Scrooge considering it "a poor excuse for picking a man's pocket every 25th of December!"
