Book The Sufficiency of Scripture Basic Issues and Points of Contention

Download or read book The Sufficiency of Scripture Basic Issues and Points of Contention written by Noel Weeks and published by Banner of Truth Trust. This book was released on 2023-09-05 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Even though Scripture is the cornerstone of the Christian faith, there is much confusion on the doctrine of Scripture. This has led to its inspiration and authority becoming an area of debate. Here, in this comprehensive study, the late Dr Noel Weeks brought his multi-disciplinary learning to bear on the question of the sufficiency of Scripture. Older distinctions between fundamentalist and modernist, evangelical and liberal, have become obsolete as more subtle distinctions have emerged in the debate about the Bible. In view of this, The Sufficiency of Scripture deals with such diverse issues as revelation, translation, creation, prophecy, and the role of women in the church. Dr Weeks provides careful analysis of the biblical teaching in these areas, giving 'depth criticism' of much of the superficial and false thinking expressed in some contemporary discussions of these questions. The Sufficiency of Scripture combines unusually wide learning with radical criticism. Thorough in its approach and instructive in its handling of material, it is deeply provocative and provides a unique contribution to the modern debate on the Bible. Noel Weeks' contentions cannot be ignored by Christians who take seriously their commitment to the Bible as the word of God.

Book Scripture and Tradition Acadia Studies in Bible and Theology

Download or read book Scripture and Tradition Acadia Studies in Bible and Theology written by Edith M. Humphrey and published by Baker Books. This book was released on 2013-04-15 with total page 231 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In some of the church's history, Scripture has been pitted against tradition and vice versa. Prominent New Testament scholar Edith Humphrey, who understands the issue from both Protestant and Catholic/Orthodox perspectives, revisits this perennial point of tension. She demonstrates that the Bible itself reveals the importance of tradition, exploring how the Gospels, Acts, and the Epistles show Jesus and the apostles claiming the authority of tradition as God's Word, both written and spoken. Arguing that Scripture and tradition are not in opposition but are necessarily and inextricably intertwined, Humphrey defends tradition as God's gift to the church. She also works to dismantle rigid views of sola scriptura while holding a high view of Scripture's authority.

Book The Shape of Sola Scriptura

Download or read book The Shape of Sola Scriptura written by Keith A. Mathison and published by Canon Press & Book Service. This book was released on 2001 with total page 370 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In what shape do we find the doctrine of sola Scriptura today? Many modern Evangelicals see it as a license to ignore history and the creeds in favor of a more splintered approach to the Christian living. In the past two decades, Roman Catholic and Eastern Orthodox apologists have strongly tried to undermine sola Scriptura as unbiblical, unhistorical, and impractical. But these groups rest their cases on a recent, false take on sola Scriptura. The ancient, medieval, and classical Protestant view of sola Scriptura actually has a quite different shape than most opponents and defenders maintain. Therein lies the goal of this book-an intriguing defense of the ancient (and classical Protestant) doctrine of sola Scriptura against the claims of Rome, the East, and modern Evangelicalism. "The issue of sola Scriptura is not an abstract problem relevant only to the sixteenth-century Reformation, but one that poses increasingly more serious consequences for contemporary Christianity. This work by Keith Mathison is the finest and most comprehensive treatment of the matter I've seen. I highly recommend it to all who embrace the authority of sacred Scripture." -R.C. Book A Disputation on Holy Scripture

Download or read book A Disputation on Holy Scripture written by William Whitaker and published by Wipf and Stock Publishers. This book was released on 2004-02-13 with total page 730 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Parker Society was the London-based Anglican society that printed in fifty-four volumes the works of the leading English Reformers of the sixteenth century. It was formed in 1840 and disbanded in 1855 when its work was completed. Named after Matthew Parker -- the first Elizabethan Archbishop of Canterbury, who was known as a great collector of books -- the stimulus for the foundation of the society was provided by the Tractarian movement, led by John Henry Newman and Edward B. Pusey. Some members of this movement spoke disparagingly of the English Reformation, and so some members of the Church of England felt the need to make available in an attractive form the works of the leaders of that Reformation.

  • Pages : 218 pages

Download or read book Genesis and Cosmos written by Adam Rasmussen and published by BRILL. This book was released on 2019-03-25 with total page 218 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In Genesis and Cosmos Adam Rasmussen examines how Basil and Origen addressed scientific problems in their interpretations of Genesis 1. For the first time, he offers an in-depth analysis of Basil’s thinking on three problems in Scripture-and-science: the nature of matter, the super-heavenly water, and astrology. Both theologians worked from the same fundamental perspective that science is the “servant” of Christianity, useful yet subordinate. Rasmussen convincingly shows how Basil used Origen’s writings to construct his own solutions. Only on the question of the water does Basil break with Origen, who allegorized the water. Rasmussen demonstrates how they sought to integrate science and Scripture and thus remain instructive for those engaged in the dialogue between religion and science today.
