Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book explores the relationship between the Bible and the world of music, an association that is recorded from ancient times in the Old Testament, and one that has continued to characterize the cultural self-expression of Western Civilization ever since. The study surveys the emergence of this close relationship in the era following the end of the Roman Empire and through the Middle Ages, taking particular note of the role of Gregorian chant, folk music and the popularity of mystery, morality and passion plays in reflection of the Sacred Scripture and its themes during those times. With the emergence of polyphony and the advent of the Reformation in the sixteenth century, the interaction between the Bible and music increased dramatically, culminating in the evolution of opera and oratorio as specific genres during the Renaissance and the Early Baroque period. Both these genres have proved essential to the interplay between sacred revelation and the various types of music that have come to determine cultural expression in the history of Europe. The book initially provides an overview of how the various themes and types of Biblical literature have been explored in the story of Western music. It then looks closely at the role of oratorio and opera over four centuries, considering the most famous and striking examples and considering how the music has responded in different ages to the sacred text and narrative. The last chapter examines how biblical theology has been used to dramatic purpose in a particular operatic genre – that of French Grand Opera. The academic apparatus includes an iconography, a detailed bibliography and an index of biblical and musical references, themes and subjects.

Book excerpt: There were shepherds abiding in the field...Picture this. You are the guest of shepherds one evening in a huge, open, field. Empty except for some sheep, and shepherds. Without the shepherds' campfire, all around would be pitch black, with only millions of stars for company. All of a sudden, what looks like thousands of angelic figures appear in the sky, out of nowhere and sing, in a quality of tone and loudness of volume you have never heard before,"Glory to God in the highest, and peace on earth, good will towards men."Jesus said, "It is not the healthy who need a doctor, but the sick. I have not come to call the righteous, but sinners." Mark 2:17. The angels' song was for shepherds, and for us all. Jesus is MESSIAH, the Lamb of God who takes away the sin of the world. MESSIAH, the world's most loved and performed oratorio, is a work of musical genius by George Frideric Handel coupled with passages from the Bible expertly chosen by Charles Jennings. The Bible is the story of God, it is salvation history. Matthew Henry knew this, as he crafted and published his iconic Bible commentary in 1706. For this reason, we have extracted passages from Henry's commentary as useful notes to accompany the MESSIAH libretto. Like Matthew Henry, Charles Jennings and Handel himself may you, through reading the words of this book and listening to the peerless meisterwerk MESSIAH, unlock the "riches of under-standing and the knowledge of God's mystery, which is Christ, in whom are hidden all the treasures of wisdom and knowledge." Colossians 2: 2-3.

Book excerpt: Throughout its history, the Christian church has had a troubled relationship with the arts, whether literature, poetry, music, visual arts, or other forms of artistic expression. This volume is not designed to resolve the issues, but it is designed to present a number of different statements about various dimensions of the arts in their relationship to the Bible. The Bible is the document that stands behind the Christian church as an inspiration to it and to its arts. As a result, we have divided this volume into six parts: perspectives on the arts, culture and art, visual enactments, contemporary interpretations, music, and the Bible and literature. Many of the issues that the history of the interaction of the arts and the Bible within the Christian church has uncovered are insightfully and artfully addressed by this book. The wide range of contributors runs the gamut from practicing artists of various media to scholars within varied academic fields.
