Book Pattern Recognition Techniques Applied to Biomedical Problems

Download or read book Pattern Recognition Techniques Applied to Biomedical Problems written by Martha Refugio Ortiz-Posadas and published by Springer Nature. This book was released on 2020-02-29 with total page 227 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book covers pattern recognition techniques applied to various areas of biomedicine, including disease diagnosis and prognosis, and several problems of classification, with a special focus on—but not limited to—pattern recognition modeling of biomedical signals and images. Multidisciplinary by definition, the book’s topic blends computing, mathematics and other technical sciences towards the development of computational tools and methodologies that can be applied to pattern recognition processes. In this work, the efficacy of such methods and techniques for processing medical information is analyzed and compared, and auxiliary criteria for determining the correct diagnosis and treatment strategies are recommended and applied. Researchers in applied mathematics, the computer sciences, engineering and related fields with a focus on medical applications will benefit from this book, as well as professionals with a special interest in state-of-the-art pattern recognition techniques as applied to biomedicine.

Book Sciatica Foundations of diagnosis and conservative treatment

Download or read book Sciatica Foundations of diagnosis and conservative treatment written by Robert James Trager and published by Integrated Clinics, LLC. This book was released on 2019-11-09 with total page 245 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book summarizes research about sciatica for clinicians such as chiropractors, physical therapists, primary care providers, osteopaths, and physiatrists. Well-informed patients will also benefit from reading this book. This book uses thousands of references, hundreds of images, original illustrations, and case studies to review mechanisms of pain, examination techniques, and treatment of sciatica. While the focus is on non-pharmaceutical and minimally invasive treatments, this book also reviews the indications for more invasive procedures. Each chapter also includes a historical review dating back decades or centuries, which puts the newer treatments in perspective. In this book you will learn: What is sciatica and does it always relate to the spine? What common features occur in most cases of sciatica? Has our concept of what causes sciatica changed over time? What does it mean when symptoms are above the knee or below the knee? Can imaging help determine if disc lesions are causing symptoms? Does sciatica mean you are just getting old? What mechanisms allow disc herniations to heal? What percentage of cases of sciatica typically require surgery? What are the most effective non-pharmaceutical treatments for sciatica? What vitamins and natural substances are beneficial for sciatica?

Book excerpt: In nature, many physical processes are governed by the passage of time. The study of these processes - chronobiology - reveals rhythmic patterns which may be yearly, monthly, daily or more frequent. Novel drug delivery systems are currently being delivered that will release varying quantities of a drug at optimum times to coincide with these rhythmic patterns.Chronotherapeutics considers the pharmaceutical and therapeutic implications associated with biological clocks. The book presents a comprehensive discussion of specific diseases that are time dependent, and the drugs and new drug formulations that can be used as treatments.Written by leading international experts in the field, Chronotherapeutics provides up-to-date information on chronobiology for non-chronobiologists in pharmaceutical and medical sciences. Peter Redfern is Professor of Pharmacology at the University of Bath, UK.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The interplay of hormones, health and behavior across the female life cycle, especially during the menopausal transition, poses a special challenge to health care professionals.Written by experts, this book brings together the knowledge gained on the menopausal transition from clinical experience and medical research. Topics like 'what to expect' from the menopausal transition, sexuality, sociocultural changes, impact of life stressors, and emergence of depression are discussed. The physiology of thermoregulation and the occurrence of hot flashes are reviewed for a better understanding of vasomotor complaints. Another chapter offers an update on hormonal and nonhormonal treatment strategies by presenting an overview of the management of mood and anxiety during the menopausal transition. The emergence of psychotic symptoms associated with peri- and postmenopausal changes in sex hormone levels is also addressed. Lastly, the book includes an excellent review on the pros and cons of hormonal therapy in the post-Women's Health Initiative era. This book is a must for gynecologists, psychiatrists, endocrinologists, epidemiologists involved in the clinical care of mature women as well as researchers and students interested in obtaining an up-to-date overview of this topic.

Book Cryotechniques in Biological Electron Microscopy

Download or read book Cryotechniques in Biological Electron Microscopy written by Rudolf A. Steinbrecht and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 308 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: To preserve tissue by freezing is an ancient concept going back pre sumably to the practice of ice-age hunters. At first glance, it seems as simple as it is attractive: the dynamics of life are frozen in, nothing is added and nothing withdrawn except thermal energy. Thus, the result should be more life-like than after poisoning, tan ning and drying a living cell as we may rudely call the conventional preparation of specimens for electron microscopy. Countless mishaps, however, have taught electron microscopists that cryotechniques too are neither simple nor necessarily more life-like in their outcome. Not too long ago, experts in cryotechniques strictly denied that a cell could truly be vitrified, i.e. that all the solutes and macro molecules could be fixed within non-crystalline, glass-like solid water without the dramatic shifts and segregation effects caused by crystallization. We now know that vitrification is indeed pos sible. Growing insight into the fundamentals of the physics of water and ice, as well as increasing experience of how to cool cells rapidly enough have enlivened the interest in cryofixation and pro duced a wealth of successful applications.
