Download or read book Scribner Family Papers written by William M. Scribner and published by . This book was released on 1860 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Approximately 300 pages of genealogical research notes from the early 1900s pertaining to the Scribner, Freeman, and Heckle families, extending back to the 17th century. Materials primarily trace the genealogical lines of the Scribner family descending from Waterboro, Maine and were probably collected by William Marshall Scribner. The collection also includes twenty-seven photographs, mostly of Scribner family members and their homesteads in Maine and New Hampshire from 1864-1900. Other materials include speeches given by John Conant Long, a Chicago real estate and businessman. It is unclear how Long is affiliated with the family. There are also extensive research and notes by Ethel Lega-Weekes regarding the Freeman family. These research notes were probably sent to Maud Hambleton Kirk (Mrs. Walter Radcliffe Kirk) of Chicago. It is also unclear how the Freeman family or the Kirks are related to the Scribner family.

In her extraordinary bestseller, Adrian Nicole LeBlanc immerses readers in the intricacies of the ghetto, revealing the true sagas lurking behind the headlines of gangsta glamour, gold-drenched drug dealers, and street-corner society. Focusing on two romances—Jessica’s dizzying infatuation with a hugely successful young heroin dealer, Boy George, and Coco’s first love with Jessica's little brother, Cesar—Random Family is the story of young people trying to outrun their destinies. Jessica and Boy George ride the wild adventure between riches and ruin, while Coco and Cesar stick closer to the street, all four caught in a precarious dance between survival and death. Friends get murdered; the DEA and FBI investigate Boy George; Cesar becomes a fugitive; Jessica and Coco endure homelessness, betrayal, the heartbreaking separation of prison, and, throughout it all, the insidious damage of poverty. Now Cole has returned to discover his elderly father, freed from prison, living alone in their old home and succumbing to dementia. Matters grow even more complicated when Cole’s rabble-rousing son Daniel is expelled from high school. So Cole summons Daniel to Connecticut to work in the tobacco fields—Cole’s own job growing up. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Scribners tells the inside story of five generations—over 150 years—at the legendary publishing house of Charles Scribner's Sons, beginning with its founding in an unused chapel in downtown New York, continuing through its golden era on Fifth Avenue above the famous landmark bookstore and down to the present day. The author, the fifth of the Charleses to work at that house of celebrated authors, provides here an inside view—"between the covers" of illustrious and notorious books—of the family members, editors, and authors of this colorful literary history. Among the writers who illuminate this story, we find in the early years Robert Louis Stevenson, Rudyard Kipling, Henry James, Edith Wharton, Teddy Roosevelt, Winston Churchill, John Galsworthy, and the artists Charles Dana Gibson, N. C. Wyeth, and Maxfield Parrish, who illustrated Scribner's Magazine as well as Scribner books. Then with the arrival of "editor of genius" Max Perkins, the story takes off into the heights of twentieth-century fiction with Scott Fitzgerald, Thomas Wolfe, Marjorie Kinnan Rawlings, Marcia Davenport, Alan Paton, James Jones and—above all—Ernest Hemingway, that most loyal and enduring author whose works were published by four generations of Scribners. Famous children's classics The Wind in the Willows, Peter Pan, and The Yearling also take their place of honor in the firm's contribution to new generations of readers. This engaging personal account of family history—both in and out of the office—includes the most colorful controversies: from Mussolini and Trotsky to Lindbergh and C. P. Snow, as well as behind-the-scenes adventures of the author's father as he navigated the seas with industry storms and publishing corsairs before finding a safe harbor at Macmillan and finally, after the demise of tycoon Robert Maxwell, Simon & Schuster. The author, an art historian, found himself for thirty years in the company of writers by "an accident of birth." But it proved an adventure beyond his reckoning, here told with the candor and informality of a family gathering, as well as with humor and affection for his father, P. D. James, Louis Auchincloss, Andrew Greeley, and other authors with whom he worked personally. As Scott Fitzgerald wrote, "If it wasn't life, it was magnificent."

Book After Visiting Friends

Download or read book After Visiting Friends written by Michael Hainey and published by Simon and Schuster. This book was released on 2014-02-18 with total page 320 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "A decade in the writing, the haunting story of a son's quest to understand the mystery of his father's death--a universal memoir about the secrets families keep and the role they play in making us who we are. Michael Hainey had just turned six when his uncle knocked on his family's back door one morning with the tragic news: Bob Hainey, Michael's father, was found alone near his car on Chicago's North Side, dead, of an apparent heart attack. Thirty-five years old, a young assistant copy desk chief at the Chicago Sun-Times, Bob was a bright and shining star in the competitive, hard-living world of newspapers, one that involved booze-soaked nights that bled into dawn. And then suddenly he was gone, leaving behind a young widow, two sons, a fractured family--and questions surrounding the mysterious nature of his death that would obsess Michael throughout adolescence and long into adulthood. Finally, roughly his father's age when he died, and a seasoned reporter himself, Michael set out to learn what happened that night. Died after visiting friends, the obituaries said. But the details beyond that were inconsistent. What friends? Where? At the heart of his quest is Michael's all-too-silent, opaque mother, a woman of great courage and tenacity--and a steely determination not to look back. Prodding and cajoling his relatives, and working through a network of his father's buddies who abide by an honor code of silence and secrecy, Michael sees beyond the long-held myths and ultimately reconciles the father he'd imagined with the one he comes to know--and in the journey discovers new truths about his mother. A stirring portrait of a family and its legacy of secrets, After visiting friends is the story of a son who goes in search of the truth and finds not only his father, but a rare window into a world of men and newspapers and fierce loyalties that no longer exists"--Provided by publisher.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: It was “the golden age” of American literature. Max Perkins edited Hemingway and Fitzgerald, royalties were still calculated by hand, and business was usually based on personal ties between publisher and author. It was into this world that Charles Scribner, Jr. was born, his career predetermined at the time of his christening. He grew up in publishing and cut his editorial teeth on giants like Edmund Wilson, C.P. Snow, P.D. James and Charles Lindbergh. But towering above them all was Ernest Hemingway, whose friendship Scribner recalls with affection. “An elegant memoir of a publishing prince’s lifelong devotion to great books.” —A.Scott Berg

Book excerpt: The business of making an American literary icon The Lousy Racket is a thorough examination of Ernest Hemingway's working relationship with his American publisher, Charles Scribner's Sons, and with his editors there: Maxwell Perkins, Wallace Meyer, and Charles Scribner III. This first critical study of Hemingway's professional collaboration with Scribners also details the editing, promotion, and sales of the books he published with the firm from 1926 to 1952 and provides a fascinating look into the American publishing industry in the early twentieth century. This painstakingly researched study reveals the working relationship between Hemingway and his editors, with special emphasis on the friendship that developed between Hemingway and the dean of American book editors, Maxwell Perkins. Drawing on many unpublished resources, including correspondence between Hemingway and his editors and others in the firm, as well as printing, advertising records, and sales dummies, Robert W. Trogdon shows how Hemingway's public reputation was shaped in large part by Scribners. Hemingway scholars will appreciate this contribution to Hemingway studies, and The Lousy Racket is an important contribution to studies in the modernist era in American literature and to book history.
