Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "Never before have women faced such an opportunity for service as they now have in producing and conserving foods. Not only must home demands be met, but also provision must be made for those people whose production of food has been interrupted by the war. Already response to the appeals for production has been made to increasing the acreage of gardens in town and country. The responsibility of wisely utilizing the yield rests largely upon the women and girls in their homes. Canning will furnish an important means of conservation. Few more important contributions to national welfare can be made than that represent by adding to the home food supply, thus making more commercial products available for export. The use of an abundant supply of fruits and green vegetables is at all times essential to health. Since these are so abundant at certain seasons as actually to be wasted and at other times very expensive and difficult to obtain, it s important to preserve quantities of perishable fruits and vegetables during the growing season for use during the winter. The problem of furnishing an adequate and economical supply of food often is to be solved only by such conservation. In addition, the need for variety int he diet is met most easily by preserving the surplus. Owing to present conditions it is imperative not only to produce and preserve supplies of food, but also to plan in advance to select the most economical method for keeping the various products." -- p. This book was released on 2018-03-30 with total page 22 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Facts About the Screwworm Barrier Program The screwworm is a destructive parasite of warmblooded animals that has been dreaded by livestock producers since pioneer days. Screwworms are attracted to and deposit their eggs in open wounds of domestic and wild animals and man. Screwworm larvae (maggots) hatch in the wounds and devour the flesh of the living host animal, causing weight losses, general reduction in productivity, maiming, and ire quently death. Before large-scale control measures were launched by the u.s. Department of Agriculture in cooperation with the affected States, annual losses to the livestock industry from screwworms sometimes rose to many millions of dollars. Screwworm losses among wildlife were also high. The last-remaining established infestations of screwworms were eradicated from the United States in 1966 as a result of all-out campaigns in the Southeast and in the Southwest. Although the eradication goal has been reached, the battle against the screwworm is still far from ended. Mexico and other countries to the south still have established populations of screw worms. The task now is to keep the screwworm from gaining a foothold once again in the United States. This could happen with disastrous results to livestock producers and related industries unless strong defense against the screwworm are maintained. This book was released on 2017-11-19 with total page 22 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Progress in Screwworm Eradication Screwworms are the larvae, or maggots, of the screwworm fly. They are a serious pest of warmblooded animals - livestock, pets, wildlife, and even humans. They closely resemble common blowfly maggots. But unlike blowfly maggots - which feed on carrion or dead or diseased tissue - screwworms consume the healthy flesh of the warmblooded animals they infest. Screwworms are found in open untreated wounds. The female fly lays a mass of eggs on the edge of a wound. Larvae hatch from these eggs and burrow into the flesh, where they feed. Mature larvae drop to the ground and pass through their pupal stage in the soil. Later - usually in about 10 days, but sometimes as much as 60 days, depending on the weather - they emerge from the soil as flies. Within days the flies mate, and begin infesting livestock with a new generation of screwworms. Screwworms seriously injure, maim, or kill infested animals, particularly if wounds are untreated and become reinfested. Screwworm larvae feed continuously. They grow from nearly microscopic size to about one-half inch in length, and in the process greatly enlarge the wound. This destructive parasite was a major pest throughout the southern and southwestern States, and today is still found in Mexico, Central and South America, and the Greater Antilles Islands.
