Book On the Wings of Habitat

Download or read book On the Wings of Habitat written by Orest Stocco and published by Trafford Publishing. This book was released on 2002 with total page 338 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Habitat for Humanity is a worldwide organization that builds homes with volunteer labour for needy people. Without volunteers to build these homes, Habitat for Humanity wouldn't exist; and ON THE WINGS OF HABITAT is a novel that explores the unique character of one specific Habitat volunteer, a mystery man called Tom Hudson; and in so doing, the story sheds light on the spiritual benefits of volunteerism. The three questions that this novel seeks to answer are: 1. Why do people volunteer their time to a cause? 2. What's in it for them? 3. What kind of people are volunteers? The narrator of ON THE WINGS OF HABITAT is a man who is not only a tradesman (a housepainter and drywall taper), but a seeker-writer; and it is his eclectic spiritual perspective on life that gives this novel its mystery, tension, and page-turning excitement. ON THE WINGS OF HABITAT is a love story. Two volunteers fall in love during the blitz build, Tom Hudson and Lorie Maki; but as critical as this love may be to carry the story along, it is Tom Hudson's profoundly disturbing Christian dilemma that gives the story its drama. Tom Hudson strikes a friendship with the narrator, Oriano DiFelice; and through this friendship his dilemma is given some measure of resolution, but only upon the condition that he rethinks some of the fundamental Christian premises that he holds dear. Because of the narrator's unique spiritual perspective on life, tensions arise between Tom Hudson's Christian beliefs and Oriano's belief in the Spiritual Laws of Karma and Reincarnation. This tension between traditionally held Christian beliefs and individual spiritual beliefs is also poignantly revealed in the character of Norman James Gauthier, a gay Roman Catholic Habitat volunteer who plays an important part in carrying the story to a happy resolution. The central character of ON THE WINGS OF HABITAT is the narrator. What makes him so fascinating is his profound grasp of the spiritual life. Through him the reader is led into the mysteries of Christ's mind-boggling teaching of spiritual rebirth, and how Oriano DiFelice came to grasp the secrets of this misunderstood teaching is what makes this novel such a unique memoir, and fascinating read. "The purpose of life," writes Orest Stocco, "is to become a giver, not a taker." And in his novel memoir he explores the nature of goodness which defines the volunteer. A captivating story woven into the Habitat for Humanity millennium blitz build in Thunder Bay, Ontario, ON THE WINGS OF HABITAT will awaken you to your own potential for goodness. It is a story that goes against the currents of contemporary literature and dares to speak the truth about man's spiritual purpose in life. ON THE WINGS OF HABITAT is a daring, provocative love story that will inspire you to rethink your priorities and connect you with your inner self, and fellow man.

Book excerpt: Sleepwalk is a high speed and darkly comic road trip through a near future America with a big-hearted mercenary, from beloved and acclaimed award-winning novelist Dan Chaon. “[Chaon] does madcap well and likes his characters, even the killers—especially the killers.”—The New York Times Book Review A New York Times Book Review Editors’ Choice An NPR “Book of the Day” A USA Today “Must Read” Sleepwalk’s hero, Will Bear, is a man with so many aliases that he simply thinks of himself as the Barely Blur. At fifty years old, he’s been living off the grid for over half his life. He’s never had a real job, never paid taxes, never been in a committed relationship. A good-natured henchman with a complicated and lonely past and a passion for LSD microdosing, he spends his time hopscotching across state lines in his beloved camper van, running sometimes shady often dangerous errands for a powerful and ruthless operation he’s never troubled himself to learn too much about. He has lots of connections, but no true ties. His longest relationships are with an old rescue dog that has post-traumatic stress and a childhood friend as deeply entrenched in the underworld as he is, who, lately, he’s less and less sure he can trust. Out of the blue, one of Will's many burner phones heralds a call from a twenty-year-old woman claiming to be his biological daughter. She says she’s the product of one of his long-ago sperm donations; he’s half certain she’s AI. She needs his help. She’s entrenched in a widespread and nefarious plot involving Will’s employers, and for Will to continue to have any contact with her increasingly fuzzes the line between the people he is working for and the people he’s running from. With his signature blend of haunting emotional realism and fast-paced intrigue, Dan Chaon populates his fractured America with characters who ring all too true. Gazing both back to the past and forward to an inevitable-enough-seeming future, Sleepwalk examines where we’ve been and where we’re going and the connections that bind us, no matter how far we travel to dodge them or how cleverly we hide.

After years of braving the Arctic’s frigid temperatures or endless hours tracking the Spirit Bear to capture the perfect shot for National Geographic, Meg Jeffries decides to move back to the city—San Francisco. She wants a life with more stability. The kind that lets her see her family more than once a year and comes with owning a toaster or a full-sized tube of toothpaste. Westin Drake is famous for fast cars and box office sales. Yet he’s a terrible driver and secretly hopes his fifteen minutes is almost up. West moved from Los Angeles to San Francisco, looking for some substance and time near his family. But now that the buzz of his next film, Full Throttle – Floor It, is hitting maximum fervor, West keeps everyone at arm’s length so he can protect the people he loves… until he can’t. When the public mistakes a simple kiss on the cheek for a budding romance, Meg and West are caught in a media frenzy. Somewhere amid the backseat getaways and plastered smiles, Meg discovers the man behind the glossy photographs, and West wonders how he’ll ever let her go once the cameras stop rolling. If I don't want immediate deportation on my to-do list, I need help, stat. Quickest solution—marry Lucas Walker, my cranky and oh-so-annoying co-worker. Still, this can work. We’ll have rules and have to stick to them. I won’t think about his muscled arms or how stupid handsome he is even while he pushes all my hot buttons. It’s a marriage on paper only. I need to remember that. Player two, press start. When that exasperating Canadian, Katya Ellis, asked for help, I agreed because she was willing to help me in return. She doesn’t need to know it’s in my best interest for her to stay in the country. Nope, this is a business arrangement through and through. Which means I’ll set aside all those involuntary fantasies I’ve been having about her shapely body pressed to mine… What could go wrong? Welp… as it turns out, just about everything.
