Download or read book Screening Religions in Italy written by Clodagh J. Brook and published by University of Toronto Press. This book was released on 2019-11-13 with total page 191 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Religion has had been foundational in shaping Italy. Home to the Vatican State, the Italian peninsula is the religious centre for one billion Catholics globally. It is also increasingly home to those of other faiths, especially Islam. Italy's development as a contemporary post-secular and multi-religious society is fraught and fascinating. The recent return of religious discourse from the margins of Western society to a central position is a sign of what German philosopher, J?rgen Habermas, has defined as the post-secular condition. Habermas and others have questioned what most people in the West had, up to a few years ago, taken for granted: the unstoppable forward march of secularization and the subsequent marginalization of religion. Instead, one of the greatest global fault-lines in the contemporary world - the divide between absolutist extremist Islamic faith and liberal, but Christian-inflected, secular values - has religious identity at its core. The first book-length study to examine religion in contemporary Italian cinema and television fiction, Screening Religions in Italy identifies two key issues: how Italian filmmaking constructs the continuing position of religion in the public sphere and why religion persists on Italian screens. It spans genres such as horror, comedy, hagiopics, and TV fiction, and explores both commercial and art-house filmmaking. It treats films and television series that range from Moretti's Habemus Papam to Sorrentino's The Young Pope.

Download or read book Testing Pluralism written by and published by BRILL. This book was released on 2013-06-20 with total page 244 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This volume of the Religion and the Social Order series examines the phenomenon of the globalization of religions that has particularly characterized the last fifty years. Historically, religions were relatively tightly connected with territoriality. The advent of relatively inexpensive and relatively accessible air transport has made it possible for groups of significant size to move from their original homelands and resettle in new sites. In contrast to predictions associated with secularization theories that dominated the middle of the twentieth century, today we find that the world’s religions continue to provide meaning and value in the lives of their adherents. This volume examines at a global level a variety of such groups and their adjustments. Contributors include Edward Bailey, Barbara Bertolani, Anthony Blasi, Emanuela Contiero, Robert Dixon, Anat Feldman, Christina Gutiérrez Zúñiga, Barbara Kilbourne, Barbara Loach, Neils Reeh, Stefano Sbalchiero, Renée de la Torre.

Download or read book Italian Jewish Networks from the Seventeenth to the Twentieth Century written by Francesca Bregoli and published by Springer. This book was released on 2018-07-26 with total page 223 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The volume investigates the interconnections between the Italian Jewish worlds and wider European and Mediterranean circles, situating the Italian Jewish experience within a transregional and transnational context mindful of the complex set of networks, relations, and loyalties that characterized Jewish diasporic life. Preceded by a methodological introduction by the editors, the chapters address rabbinic connections and ties of communal solidarity in the early modern period, and examine the circulation of Hebrew books and the overlap of national and transnational identities after emancipation. For the twentieth century, this volume additionally explores the Italian side of the Wissenschaft des Judentums; the role of international Jewish agencies in the years of Fascist racial persecution; the interactions between Italian Jewry, JDPs and Zionist envoys after Word War II; and the impact of Zionism in transforming modern Jewish identities.

Download or read book Rethinking Norman Italy written by Joanna H. Drell and published by Manchester University Press. This book was released on 2021-06-15 with total page 264 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This volume on Norman Italy (southern Italy and Sicily, c. 1000–1200) honours and reflects the pioneering scholarship of Graham A. Loud. An international group of scholars reassesses and recasts the paradigm by which Norman Italy has been conventionally understood, addressing varied subjects across four key themes: historiographies, identities and communities, religion and Church, and conquest. The chapters revise and refine our understanding of Norman Italy in the eleventh and twelfth centuries, demonstrating that it was not just a parochial Norman or Mediterranean entity but also an integral player in the medieval mainstream.
