Book The Buccaneers

Download or read book The Buccaneers written by Iain Lawrence and published by Yearling. This book was released on 2009-03-25 with total page 256 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "There’s pirates in the West Indies. Cannibals. They cook you alive," says Mr. Spencer to his son. These words will come to haunt 17-year-old John as he embarks on his first voyage to foreign lands. Carrying cargo destined for Jamaica, John and his crew of the Dragon set off for waters few of them have sailed before. So when they come upon a lifeboat adrift at sea, some are wary of the sailor aboard. Something about his story doesn’t quite make sense. Still, John respects the stranger’s awe-inspiring seamanship. With Horn on deck, he feels the Dragon is in the best of hands. But is Horn to be trusted? The answer becomes muddled as the Dragon encounters a very real — and very dangerous — pirate ship. Now John starts to believe his father’s warnings, especially after he becomes stranded on an island reputed to have buried treasure. A place teeming with buccaneers!

Everyone thinks science will find a cure. But Evan knows he is not sick; he is transforming . . . Evan’s metamorphosis has him confined to his bed, constantly terrified, and completely alone. Alone except for his visits from the Wuftoom, a wormlike creature that tells him he is becoming one of them. Clinging to his humanity and desperate to help his overworked single mother, Evan makes a bargain with the Vitflys, the sworn enemies of the Wuftoom. But when the bargain becomes blackmail and the Vitflys prepare for war, whom can Evan trust? Is saving his humanity worth destroying an entire species, and the only family he has left? “Dark and unsettling, Thompson’s adventure presents a break from the same-old-same-old by creating something utterly new and weird.” —Publishers Weekly

These circumstances are never questioned because as a child she considers this to be the normal way of life. Later in life, as a young adult, Sarah begins to question many aspects of her life. She discovers bizarre facts about her parents and her ancestry. The male members of the Hewett family had been the leaders in a small town in Georgia for centuries past. This new found information leads her on a journey across the country. Sarah traces her history to the far away origination of her ancestral past. The horror of her findings leads her to the Deep South, and to a place that has remained undiscovered and untouched for hundreds of years. The shocking findings leave Sarah teetering on the verge of insanity. What she finds is both terrifying, and dangerous. An accidental occurrence leads Sarah to stumble upon the horrendous and repulsive facts and obsessive actions of her ancestors. The small town is fearful of the Hewett name even to this day and the Hewett properties are thought to be haunted. She finds herself lost and trapped in a place where no one has any idea where she is. Her findings will forever be remembered and documented as the most horrendous aspects of the Hewett reign of terror on a small southern community. This reign of terror and control can be dated back for hundreds and hundreds of years. Sarah is one of the last surviving Hewetts, a name that represents terror, great fear, dominating control and greed to a small Georgia community.

Book This Is How We Fly

Download or read book This Is How We Fly written by Anna Meriano and published by Penguin. This book was released on 2020-12-15 with total page 464 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: *"Truly enchanting."--Kirkus Reviews (starred review) A loose retelling of Cinderella, about a high-school graduate who--after getting grounded for the whole summer--joins a local Quidditch league and finds her footing, perfect for fans of Dumplin', Fangirl, and everyone who's read and adored Harry Potter. 17-year-old vegan feminist Ellen Lopez-Rourke has one muggy Houston summer left before college. She plans to spend every last moment with her two best friends before they go off to the opposite ends of Texas for school. But when Ellen is grounded for the entire summer by her (sometimes) evil stepmother, all her plans are thrown out the window. Determined to do something with her time, Ellen (with the help of BFF Melissa) convinces her parents to let her join the local muggle Quidditch team. An all-gender, full-contact game, Quidditch isn't quite what Ellen expects. There's no flying, no magic, just a bunch of scrappy players holding PVC pipe between their legs and throwing dodgeballs. Suddenly Ellen is thrown into the very different world of sports: her life is all practices, training, and running with a group of Harry Potter fans. Even as Melissa pulls away to pursue new relationships and their other BFF Xiumiao seems more interested in moving on from high school (and from Ellen), Ellen is steadily finding a place among her teammates. Maybe Quidditch is where she belongs. But with her home life and friend troubles quickly spinning out of control--Ellen must fight for the future that she wants, now she's playing for keeps. Filled with heart and humor, Anna Meriano's YA debut is perfect for fans of Dumplin' and Hot Dog Girl. Praise for This is How We Fly: *"Readers will find much to appreciate about Ellen's fresh, relatable journey to define herself on her own terms." --Publishers Weekly (starred review) "A timely coming-of-age story with a unique Quidditch twist."--School Library Journal "Anna Meriano's This is How We Fly is a delightful treat of a book that will make you want to grab your broom and go! Book excerpt: Co-winner, 2010 Merle Curti Award, Organization of American HistoriansWinner, 2010 Philip Taft Labor History Book Award, ILR School at Cornell University and the Labor and Working-Class History AssociationWinner, 2010 H. L. Mitchell Award, Southern Historical Association Enslaved mariners, white seamstresses, Irish dockhands, free black domestic servants, and native-born street sweepers all navigated the low-end labor market in post-Revolutionary Baltimore. Seth Rockman considers this diverse workforce, exploring how race, sex, nativity, and legal status determined the economic opportunities and vulnerabilities of working families in the early republic. In the era of Frederick Douglass, Baltimore's distinctive economy featured many slaves who earned wages and white workers who performed backbreaking labor. By focusing his study on this boomtown, Rockman reassesses the roles of race and region and rewrites the history of class and capitalism in the United States during this time. Rockman describes the material experiences of low-wage workers—how they found work, translated labor into food, fuel, and rent, and navigated underground economies and social welfare systems. He also explores what happened if they failed to find work or lost their jobs. Rockman argues that the American working class emerged from the everyday struggles of these low-wage workers. Their labor was indispensable to the early republic’s market revolution, and it was central to the transformation of the United States into the wealthiest society in the Western world. Rockman’s research includes construction site payrolls, employment advertisements, almshouse records, court petitions, and the nation’s first “living wage” campaign. These rich accounts of day laborers and domestic servants illuminate the history of early republic capitalism and its consequences for working families.
