Book Sam s Scrapbook

Download or read book Sam s Scrapbook written by Sam Posey and published by Evro Publishing Limited. This book was released on 2021-08-24 with total page 160 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Sam Posey raced a huge variety of sports cars, saloons and open-wheel machines in numerous racing arenas -- Can-Am, USRRC, Trans-Am, IMSA, Indy, NASCAR, Formula 5000 and Formula 1 -- against rivals and friends such as George Follmer, Parnelli Jones, Mark Donohue, Peter Revson, Dan Gurney, David Hobbs and Brian Redman. Sam's Scrapbook gives a first-hand account of a romantic era in racing, through pictures no one has seen and stories no one has heard. Running alongside the images, Posey's commentary is fascinating and thoughtful, and in turns both amusing and emotional. Sam's early days: racing around his mother's house on a farm in Connecticut against his friend John Whitman. The start of his career: driving at Lime Rock, his local track, under the mentorship of John Fitch; a ride as the then-youngest American at Le Mans, with a Bizzarrini in 1966. Can-Am: racing against John Surtees, Bruce McLaren and Jim Hall in this famous "anything goes" sports car championship with a car he and Ray Caldwell designed and built. Trans-Am: competing in this spectacular saloon series during its golden age, first for Roger Penske and then as a factory driver for Dodge, against George Follmer, Parnelli Jones and Swede Savage. Later years at Le Mans: finishing third overall in a Ferrari 512 M with the North American Racing Team (NART) team in 1971; driving the first BMW 3.0 CSL 'Art Car' in 1975, featuring a paint scheme by American sculptor Alexander Calder. Open-wheel racing: a duel with Dan Gurney in the USAC Championship, finishing fifth at Indy in 1972; two drives for John Surtees in Formula 1; battling his friend and rival David Hobbs on the track and off in Formula 5000. Even more variety: three years of off-road adventures in the Baja 1000; rides with the BMW factory team at Sebring and Daytona; and his late career in the IMSA championship with actor Paul Newman and Brian Redman. This is an unusual and engaging memoir by one of America's best-loved racing heroes and will appeal to all motorsports enthusiasts.

Dan Gurney watched the winner's trophy slip away when his Ford's engine seized a heartbreaking 250 yards from the finish line in 1966. Stirling Moss was handed a bottle of Coca-Cola during the 1957 race and politely returned the empty on the next lap. No other race in motorsports has evoked such epic tales of triumph, defeat, and gallantry. The 12 Hours of Sebring has a character all its own -- born from a tradition of attracting legendary drivers and teams for extraordinarily competitive racing. Author Ken Breslauer brings to life five decades of Sebring competition in this beautifully illustrated history. And the book's exhaustive appendix provides the definitive collection of Sebring facts, including year-by-year race statistics and an index of every driver who ever competed at Sebring.

Book Ultimate Works Porsche 956

Download or read book Ultimate Works Porsche 956 written by Serge Vanbockryck and published by . This book was released on 2019-09 with total page 736 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Unleashed in 1982, the Porsche 956 became the most successful purpose-built race car in history. Many of the successes were achieved by works-entered cars, almost always in the iconic white-and-blue colours of sponsor Rothmans, and they form the focus of an extraordinary body of work researched and written by author Serge Vanbockryck over the past 30 years. This is the first part of his project, a two-volume production about the Works 956s, with a second such title on the Works 962s to follow in the summer of 2020.

Book Upper Cut

Download or read book Upper Cut written by Carrie White and published by Simon and Schuster. This book was released on 2015-12-15 with total page 432 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Shampoo meets You'll Never Eat Lunch In This Town Again in a rollicking and riveting memoir from the woman who for decades styled Hollywood's most celebrated players. I was living a hairdresser’s dream. I was making my mark in this all-male field. My appointment book was filled with more and more celebrities. And I was becoming competition for my heroes... Behind the scenes of every Hollywood photo shoot, TV appearance, and party in the ’60s, ’70s, and ’80s, there was Carrie White. As the “First Lady of Hairdressing,” Carrie collaborated with Richard Avedon on shoots for Vogue, partied with Jim Morrison, gave Sharon Tate her California signature style, and got high with Jimi Hendrix. She has counted Jennifer Jones, Betsy Bloomingdale, Elizabeth Taylor, Goldie Hawn, and Camille Cosby among her favorite clients. But behind the glamorous facade, Carrie’s world was in perpetual disarray and always had been. After her father abandoned the family when she was still a child, she was sexually abused by her domineering stepfather, and her alcoholic mother was unstable and unreliable. Carrie was sipping cocktails before her tenth birthday, and had had five children and three husbands before her twenty-eighth. She fueled the frenetic pace of her professional life with a steady diet of champagne and vodka, diet pills, cocaine, and heroin, until she eventually lost her home, her car, her career—and nearly her children. But she battled her way back, getting sober, rebuilding her relationships and her reputation as a hairdresser, and the name Carrie White was back on the door of one of Beverly Hills’s most respected salons. An unflinching portrayal of addiction and recovery, Upper Cut proves that even in Hollywood, sometimes you have to fight for a happy ending.

Book Ken Miles

    Book Details:
  • Author : Art Evans
  • Publisher : Enthusiast Books
  • Release : 2019-10-15
  • ISBN : 9781583883761
  • Pages : 0 pages

Download or read book Ken Miles written by Art Evans and published by Enthusiast Books. This book was released on 2019-10-15 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Ken Miles follows the racer's life from the early days in England to his tragic death at Riverside Raceway in 1966. The book format is somewhat different from others. It is essentially a scrapbook. More than 130 photographs are included. Many are from private collections and have never before been published. A fascinating feature is remembrances written by some who knew Miles best, like Carroll Shelby, Augie Pabst, John Morton, Bill Pollack and Ken's son, Peter. Miles himself was an accomplished writer and a few articles he wrote are reprinted. The book starts off with a complete chronology from birth to death and ends with the eulogy delivered by the author's father and a never-before assembled race record. Miles second-place finish at the 1966 Le Mans was mired in controversy. This book goes some distance toward clarification. Interspersed throughout are articles from period publications. The scrapbook is held together with text by the author, a close friend of Miles and his family.

Book Porsche Spyders 1956 1964

Download or read book Porsche Spyders 1956 1964 written by Karl Ludvigsen and published by Enthusiast Books. This book was released on 2007-08-14 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The great success that Porsche enjoyed with its first 550 Spyders spurred its small but effective racing cadre to a more ambitious design with its 1956 Type 550A. It's stiffer space frame was inside the 550A that Umberto Maglioli drove single-handed to win the 1956 Targa Florio -- Porsches greatest victory yet. Experiments in 56 with an even smaller racer, the Type 645, ended with a disastrous crash. Not for nothing was it nicknamed "Mickey Mouse". In 1957 Porsche created the immortal RSK, a race and hillclimb winner. The RS60 arrives in 1960 to meet new rules, winning Sebring outright. It evolved into the RS61 and then the Type 718, using the Grand Prix eight-cylinder engine. Races and hillclimbs throughout the world were mastered by these agile silver cars through 1964, depicted in magnificent images from the Ludvigsen Library.
