Book excerpt: William H. Harris (1836-1904), the progenitor of this family, was born at Common Moor, Cornwall, England. He was the son of Thomas Harris and Susanna Hooper. He married Lavinia Willy (Willey) (1836-1915), daughter of Peter Willey and Honour Nicholas, 1856. She was born in Trenihick? and baptized in the Anglican Parish of St. Agnes, near Truro in Cornwall County. Family immigrated to America in 1859-1860. They lived first in Greensboro, Guildford Co., North Carolina. Family moved from North Carolina to Pennsylvania ca. 1861, from there to Virginia (now W.Va.) to Kentucky, to Maryland, and to Scranton, Osage Co., Kansas. Descendants live in Maryland, Kansas, Pennsylvania, Ohio, Oklahoma, Arizona and elsewhere. David Pritchard (1824-1888) was born in Monmouthshire, South Wales, the son of Samuel Pritchard. He married 1847 in Pontypool, Parish of Trevethin, Monmouth, Wales, Louisa Waite (1826-1894). They came to Allegany Co., Maryland in 1854/1855. Frederick Knippenberg (1813-1871) was born in Wurttemberg, Germany, the son of Henry Knippenberg, a Lutheran Minister. He married 1853 Rachel Coulter (b. 1830). They emigrated in Dec. 1856, and lived first in Wellersburg, Somerset Co., Pa. and then in Allegany Co., Md.

Book excerpt: The Welsh comprised a distinct and highly visible ethno-linguistic group in many areas of the United States during the late decades of the nineteenth century and the early decades of the twentieth. Through a consideration of settlement patterns, cultural and religious institutions, language retention, and marriage preference, this book provides a micro-study of four identifiable Welsh communities over a set period of time. The nature, strength and long-term viability of these communities is analysed and assessed, as are the ways in which they changed; a process which saw the Welsh become Welsh-Americans and, ultimately, Americans. Welsh immigrants in the USA were invariably portrayed as models of American citizenship by virtue of their perceived national characteristics and their standards of social behaviour. This book tests the assumption that the Welsh were prime illustrations of the American Dream by analysing one facet of that dream; socio-economic success as revealed by occupational mobility. To what extent did the Welsh as a group occupy a privileged position in the occupational hierarchy, and were they able to maintain and improve upon their social and economic position in a relatively short space of time?

Open class conflict is disappearing, strikes are becoming rare, unions are declining, corporate power is growing, and work is insecure and contingent. When Workers Shot Back: Class Conflict from 1877 to 1921 explores one of the most tumultuous times in United States history. Self-organised workers recomposed their power by devising new strategies and tactics to disrupt the capitalist economy and extract concessions. Mine, railroad, steel, and iron workers pursued a strategy of tension that sometimes erupted into militant class conflict and general strikes in which workers took over and ran a number of cities. Turning common wisdom on its head, When Workers Shot Back argues that the escalation of working class conflict drives rather than reacts to the consolidation and reorganisation of capital and economic and political reform of the state. Studying the class composition of this period illustrates why workers escalated the intensity of their tactics, even using tactical violence, to extract concessions and reforms when all other efforts to do so were blocked, coopted or repressed.
