Book excerpt: SƆRAMBLƎD exemplifies the struggles faced by many individuals with learning disabilities. Its main character - Matt Walsh - is a twenty-something adult whose learning disability is the root cause of persistent angst, frustration and turmoil as he tries desperately to achieve, to succeed both in his career - and in his personal life. The novel attempts to describe Matt's inner-most thoughts as he works to better himself and overcome his skill deficits. His anxiety - and life's common distractions - often get the better of him as he strives to move up the ladder toward career security. In addition to coping with his work-related issues, Matt has fallen in love with Sarah - a beautiful and talented woman with a budding medical career. She is fully aware of Matt's learning issues, loves him for his perseverance and his innate talents, and supports his desire and efforts at improvement. But, Matt's love for Sarah causes him additional anxiety. He needlessly worries that he can't meet her expectations. And he fears moving forward with her until he can provide financially for her and the family they both want. The pages of SƆRAMBLƎD will show you how Matt perseverates on his difficulties. You'll meet individuals who play a role in Matt's life, realize the opportunities they present, and learn how Matt reacts to them. You'll see how his strength of will helps him succeed and how his fears almost undo all of his hard work. And you'll see how his intense love for Sarah both energizes and nearly paralyzes him. In the end, does Matt truly succeed? Is he able to gain control over his learning, his career, his personal life? These questions, and more, are all answered in "SƆRAMBLƎD."

Book Testing and Securing Web Applications

Download or read book Testing and Securing Web Applications written by Ravi Das and published by CRC Press. This book was released on 2020-08-04 with total page 157 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Web applications occupy a large space within the IT infrastructure of a business or a corporation. They simply just don’t touch a front end or a back end; today’s web apps impact just about every corner of it. Today’s web apps have become complex, which has made them a prime target for sophisticated cyberattacks. As a result, web apps must be literally tested from the inside and out in terms of security before they can be deployed and launched to the public for business transactions to occur. The primary objective of this book is to address those specific areas that require testing before a web app can be considered to be completely secure. The book specifically examines five key areas: Network security: This encompasses the various network components that are involved in order for the end user to access the particular web app from the server where it is stored at to where it is being transmitted to, whether it is a physical computer itself or a wireless device (such as a smartphone). Cryptography: This area includes not only securing the lines of network communications between the server upon which the web app is stored at and from where it is accessed from but also ensuring that all personally identifiable information (PII) that is stored remains in a ciphertext format and that its integrity remains intact while in transmission. Penetration testing: This involves literally breaking apart a Web app from the external environment and going inside of it, in order to discover all weaknesses and vulnerabilities and making sure that they are patched before the actual Web app is launched into a production state of operation. Threat hunting: This uses both skilled analysts and tools on the Web app and supporting infrastructure to continuously monitor the environment to find all security holes and gaps. The Dark Web: This is that part of the Internet that is not openly visible to the public. As its name implies, this is the "sinister" part of the Internet, and in fact, where much of the PII that is hijacked from a web app cyberattack is sold to other cyberattackers in order to launch more covert and damaging threats to a potential victim. Testing and Securing Web Applications breaks down the complexity of web application security testing so this critical part of IT and corporate infrastructure remains safe and in operation.

Book Censorship of the American Theatre in the Twentieth Century

Download or read book Censorship of the American Theatre in the Twentieth Century written by John H. Houchin and published by Cambridge University Press. This book was released on 2003-06-26 with total page 360 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: John Houchin explores the impact of censorship in twentieth-century American theatre. He argues that theatrical censorship coincides with significant challenges to religious, political and cultural traditions. Along with the well-known instance of the House Un-American Activities Committee in the 1950s, other almost equally influential events shaped the course of the American stage during the century. The book is arranged in chronological order. It provides a summary of censorship in eighteenth- and nineteenth-century America and then analyses key political and theatrical events between 1900 and 2000. These include a discussion of the 1913 riot after the Abbey Theatre touring produdtion of Playboy of the Western World; protests against Clifford Odet's Waiting for Lefty, performed by militant workers during the Depression; and reactions to the recent play Angels in America.

Book excerpt: It all happened so quickly one minute it seemed life was as usual, the next all those I hold dear were thrown into a dark, unchartered sea of grief . Like a raging storm we were cast into an ocean of unforgiving doom. Franticly we sought direction which lead all too quickly to a place with only the grey rain clouds of bereavement. At some point in my own desperation to cope with the raging sea enveloping me I searched for a guide in vain. My only understanding of the storm I was battling came from the wise words bestowed on me from friends I was lucky to be able to appreciate a glimmer of understanding, simply by knowing I was not the only person to have passed through a storm such as the one found when journeying through a place called grief. Grief in all its black doom is a personal process each of us has to encounter individually. It is only how we manifest every stage that is unique. My wish is that this book will provide an island for those who read it, a break in the storm and an opportunity to collect yourself. Absent feet started as a journal - simply for myself, to contend with the voyage I was unwittingly on. It has eventuate into a guide which I sincerely hope will be a lighthouse to those in need of light on the journey of bereavement.

Book The Collected Works of H G Wells

Download or read book The Collected Works of H G Wells written by H. G. Wells and published by Good Press. This book was released on 2024-01-16 with total page 7353 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Collected Works of H. G. Wells is a monumental collection of science fiction novels, short stories, and essays that showcase H. G. Wells' visionary imagination and his profound impact on the genre. Wells' literary style is characterized by his ability to combine scientific speculation with social commentary, creating works that are both thought-provoking and entertaining. From the timeless classic 'The War of the Worlds' to the imaginative 'The Invisible Man', this collection is a treasure trove of imaginative storytelling that continues to captivate readers today. H. G. Wells, a prolific writer and social reformer, was heavily influenced by his interest in scientific advancements and his concerns about the future of society. His experiences growing up in the industrial age inspired many of his works, which often explore themes of progress, morality, and the consequences of unchecked power. Wells' curiosity about the world and his desire to envision different futures drove him to create some of the most enduring works in science fiction literature. I highly recommend The Collected Works of H. G. Wells to anyone interested in exploring the intersections of science, society, and imagination. Wells' ability to blend scientific accuracy with speculative fiction makes this collection a must-read for fans of the genre and those interested in the ways in which literature can shape our understanding of the world.

Book Ridiculous

Download or read book Ridiculous written by David Kaufman and published by Hal Leonard Corporation. This book was released on 2005 with total page 548 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: (Applause Books). From his first unscripted appearance on an Off-Broadway stage in the revolutionary 1960s to the frontpage news of his death from AIDS in 1987 at age 44, Charles Ludlam embodied and helped to engender the upheavals of his time. The astonishing life and legacy of this force to be reckoned with are at last revealed in RIDICULOUS! , a literary biography of an American comic genius. After founding the Ridiculous Theatrical Company in 1967, Ludlam sustained an ever-shifting troupe of bohemian players through two decades of perennially daunting circumstances by writing 29 plays plays that he starred in and directed as well. While Ludlam's work has become increasingly popular at regional theatres, on college campuses, and on stages throughout the world, his gender-bending theories and wide-ranging cultural impact have reached far beyond Bette Midler, the original cast members of Saturday Night Live and the countless other artists he influenced during his abbreviated lifetime. Like his early plays, Ludlam's life was rife with the sex, drugs and creative experimentation that characterized the freewheeling '60s and '70s. Based on a decade of research and interviews with more than 150 people who knew or worked with Ludlam including all of the major players in his troupe and seven of his lovers RIDICULOUS! recreates the dramatic life of an inimitable and subversive theatrical master with you-are-there intensity. Winner of the LAMBDA Literary Award for Biography and the Theatre Library Association Award for Outstanding Theatre Book of the Year "David Kaufman makes a persuasive case for Ludlam's being a genius ... As a record of Ludlam's life and the theatrical world in which he was both guru and grandmaster, this book is informed and passionate." Mel Gussow, The New York Times "A fascinating portrait of an authentic stage genius and the New York avant-garde scene in which he toiled with such demented and dedicated diligence." Playbill "The phenom who inspired everyone from Bette Midler and Madeline Kahn to Tony Kushner and Paul Rudnick was no box of chocolates which, as reading experiences go, makes his story all the sweeter." Vanity Fair "This is one helluva piece of work." Marilyn Stasio, Variety.com
