Book excerpt: A collection of recipes for wilderness backpacking from the host of the popular podcast, The First 40 Miles. Trail Fuel: 40 Quick & Easy Recipes for Wilderness Backpacking My first experience with preparing food for a backpacking trip was when my husband was prepping for his first backpacking trip since his time as a boy scout. He explained, "All I know is that I need foods that are calorie dense." Because of the length and intensity of the trip, he needed human rocket fuel. Over the course of a few days, we planned his menu, put together calorie-dense meals, and tried to give enough variety for the five day adventure. Then something happened that I never expected. I was invited to go. With only a week to prepare, I did a crash course in backpacking. I loaded up my pack with all the necessities of life-plus some of those calorie dense foods that I had picked out for Josh only days before. And we were off! It was a week of peanut butter packets, granola bars, M&Ms, dehydrated dinners, and beautiful vistas! What makes great backpacking food? It's calorie-dense. It's shelf-stable. It's simple to prepare. It's a good mix of naughty and nice. It's adaptable and idiot-proof Whether you're new to backpacking or you've been on more trails than you can shake a trekking pole at, this cookbook will inspire you to rethink the essentials, lighten your load, and make the most of your time on the trail. --- Tags: backpacking for beginners, wilderness backpacking, hiking, camping, food, recipes, cookbook, meals.

Book Camp Cooking

  • Author : Christopher Cancilla
  • Publisher : CreateSpace
  • Release : 2015-01-01
  • ISBN : 9781507756102
  • Pages : 46 pages

Download or read book Camp Cooking written by Christopher Cancilla and published by CreateSpace. This book was released on 2015-01-01 with total page 46 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: I originally created this book as a booklet, which I passed out to participants when I taught the B.A.L.O.O class for Cub Scout Parents and Leaders. B.A.L.O.O stands for Basic Adult Leader Outdoor Orientation; which is a course that gives the adult a very brief exposure to a lot of facets of Scout camping. I quickly realized that the Scouts, Boy Scouts and Girl Scouts, could benefit from the recipes and the ideas of the recipes tremendously. The fact that most teens have not had a great deal of kitchen education and experience is not a secret, nor is it a shock when you learn this; but Scout Leaders need to understand that trying and failing, even if it is edible or not, is still training, experience, and education. Every single person who has ever been an active member of the Boy Scouts of America as a youth has eaten a burned pancake, possibly you were the Grubmaster for the campout and thought pancakes were easy to do. You saw your Mom or Dad make them all the time, and it looks easy. So, why not. As you place the finished pancake, looking all golden brown and delicious on the top as you can see, onto the camp plate of your patrol member, you decide to leave the bottom side down; this hides the fact that on the bottom of that breakfast you prepared for your friend, you are serving charcoal in the shape and somewhat smell of a pancake. We have all been there, either the maker or the eater. Sometimes both. Same is true for the first time you use a Dutch Oven, or a Griddle, or a Frying Pan. What about the heat sources; there is the two burner camp stove, backpack stove, charcoal, and a wood fire. Each of them has their own unique quirks that need to not only be experienced, but learned and practiced. Seriously, the hardest thing for someone to teach a new Scout when cooking is a stove, or the fire, or on charcoal for that matter is that there are a lot more levels of heat than OFF and MAX. Cooking over low or medium heat is better and safer for the meal in some respects than cooking on a blast furnace. It saves propane too! Yes, it is slower but it will taste better in the long run. Plan for the extra time, you will be rewarded when you eat. Don't get me wrong, there are times that a blazing hot surface is what is needed; the steak to get that perfect seer for example. But all in all, lower is easier to cook on over the long haul. So pick this up and bring it to your next troop meeting. Let the Scouts look it over and see if there is anything they would like to try out for the first time. You, AND THEY, will be surprised as to how easy and how good some of these recipes really are, especially in the woods!!
