Download or read book Nebraska POW Camps written by Melissa Amateis Marsh and published by Arcadia Publishing. This book was released on 2014-04-15 with total page 176 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: During World War II, thousands of Axis prisoners of war were held throughout Nebraska in base camps that included Fort Robinson, Camp Scottsbluff and Camp Atlanta. Many Nebraskans did not view the POWs as "evil Nazis." To them, they were ordinary men and very human. And while their stay was not entirely free from conflict, many former captives returned to the Cornhusker State to begin new lives after the cessation of hostilities. Drawing on first-person accounts from soldiers, former POWs and Nebraska residents, as well as archival research, Melissa Marsh delves into the neglected history of Nebraska's POW camps.

Download or read book Farming across Borders written by Timothy P. Bowman and published by Texas A&M University Press. This book was released on 2017-10-26 with total page 490 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Farming across Borders uses agricultural history to connect the regional experiences of the American West, northern Mexico, western Canada, and the North American side of the Pacific Rim, now writ large into a broad history of the North American West. Case studies of commodity production and distribution, trans-border agricultural labor, and environmental change unite to reveal new perspectives on a historiography traditionally limited to a regional approach. Sterling Evans has curated nineteen essays to explore the contours of “big” agricultural history. Crops and commodities discussed include wheat, cattle, citrus, pecans, chiles, tomatoes, sugar beets, hops, henequen, and more. Toiling over such crops, of course, were the people of the North American West, and as such, the contributing authors investigate the role of agricultural labor, from braceros and Hutterites to women working in the sorghum fields and countless other groups in between. As Evans concludes, “society as a whole (no matter in what country) often ignores the role of agriculture in the past and the present.” Farming across Borders takes an important step toward cultivating awareness and understanding of the agricultural, economic, and environmental connections that loom over the North American West regardless of lines on a map. In the words of one essay, “we are tied together . . . in a hundred different ways.”

Download or read book The Isaiah Vision written by Raymond Fung and published by Wipf and Stock Publishers. This book was released on 2009-09-01 with total page 67 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Isaiah Vision presents an ecumenical strategy for congregation-based evangelism. Behind it lies the conviction that the task of witnessing for Jesus Christ to individual people and to neighborhood communities is, in the final analysis, the responsibility of the local congregation. It draws upon the experiences of congregations in many places and a variety of situations, and is in that sense truly ecumenical. Going beyond ideas and concepts, it addresses concrete methods for their implementation, and what it commends is thus a clear, ecumenical evangelistic strategy. That strategy is based on Isaiah's vision of the restored community in which both the young and the old find fulfillment and fill out their days, and people do not labor in vain but enjoy the work of their hands.
