Book The Scottish Suffragettes and the Press

Download or read book The Scottish Suffragettes and the Press written by Sarah Pedersen and published by Springer. This book was released on 2017-07-03 with total page 212 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book approaches the Scottish women’s suffrage campaign from the point of view of the popular press. It investigates how the press engaged with the women’s suffrage movement; how suffragettes were portrayed in newspapers; and how different groups attempted to use the press to get their message into the public sphere. Scottish suffrage campaigners acknowledged the need for press coverage from the start of the campaign in the 1870s, but the arrival of the militant suffragettes completely transformed newspaper coverage. The Scottish newspapers were particularly interested in suffragette activities during local by-elections and their hounding of local anti-suffrage MPs such as Herbert Asquith. The book also investigates the impact of the First World War on the movement.

Book The Scottish Electorate

Download or read book The Scottish Electorate written by A. Brown and published by Springer. This book was released on 1998-12-20 with total page 188 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The book draws on original academic research to discuss the outcome of the 1997 general election in Scotland and the likely future shape of Scotland's politics. It offers the most rigorous and up-to-date assessment of Scottish electoral politics that is available, setting the 1997 Scottish result in a comparative context with the rest of Britain, and in a context of changing political attitudes and behaviour since the 1970s. The 1997 General Election ranks alongside 1945 and 1979 as a turning point in the post-war United Kingdom. The overwhelming endorsement of a Scottish Parliament in the September 1997 referendum will have dramatic implications for Scottish and British politics. This book enhances understanding of these developments and analyzes the relationship between national identity and the policy agenda as Scotland moves towards a new constitutional future.

Book Winning the Vote for Women

Download or read book Winning the Vote for Women written by Louise Ryan and published by . This book was released on 2018 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The campaign for women's votes in Ireland coincided with the nationalist movement, the First World War, the rise of the trade union movement, the cultural revival and, of course, the 1916 Rising. It culminated in 1918, with Ireland electing the first woman to parliament in London. However, the Irish suffrage movement was not a single-issue group. It did not merely campaign for votes, but also presented a feminist critique of the plight of Irish women in early twentieth-century society. The Irish Citizen newspaper, as the voice of the suffrage movement, provides an important insight into the various campaigns and concerns of this fascinating movement. The paper was self-consciously feminist, and, in addition to covering the major events of this tumultuous period, it addressed taboo subjects like rape, domestic violence, and child abuse. This book brings together extracts from the paper with analysis, commentary, and informative contextual background. First published in 1996 by Folena as "Irish Feminism and the Vote", this new edition has been comprehensively updated and revised. [Subject: Gender Studies, Suffrage Movement, Irish Studies, 20th C. Download or read book Women s Suffrage in Scotland written by Carole O'Connor and published by Pen and Sword. This book was released on 2019-04-30 with total page 204 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The stories of the Scottish women, rich and poor, rural and urban, who fought for the vote—includes personal and family photos. This lively exploration into the determined Scottish women, primarily of the Victorian and Edwardian periods, who fought to achieve votes for women in a male dominated society delves into some of the antics they embarked on, the tragedies that were dealt them, and the friendships they developed. The book takes you through individual areas of Scotland’s landscape and journeys through its cities and towns, revealing the secrets and shame of how women were often treated, at home, in educational establishments, in the workplace, and by the law. It discusses why women of various socioeconomic classes fought against the system through the years, in the face of immense hardship and venomous attacks by politicians, and the methods they used. In addition, accounts from individual families of Scottish suffragettes and suffragists, with photographs from their personal collections, shed light on how women were perceived by family members, men, and the nation.

Book Anna Howard Shaw

  • Author : Trisha Franzen
  • Publisher : University of Illinois Press
  • Release : 2014-03-15
  • ISBN : 0252095413
  • Pages : 297 pages

Download or read book Anna Howard Shaw written by Trisha Franzen and published by University of Illinois Press. This book was released on 2014-03-15 with total page 297 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: With this first scholarly biography of Anna Howard Shaw (1847-1919), Trisha Franzen sheds new light on an important woman suffrage leader who has too often been overlooked and misunderstood. An immigrant from a poor family, Shaw grew up in an economic reality that encouraged the adoption of non-traditional gender roles. Challenging traditional gender boundaries throughout her life, she put herself through college, worked as an ordained minister and a doctor, and built a tightly-knit family with her secretary and longtime companion Lucy E. Anthony. Drawing on unprecedented research, Franzen shows how these circumstances and choices both impacted Shaw's role in the woman suffrage movement and set her apart from her native-born, middle- and upper-class colleagues. Franzen also rehabilitates Shaw's years as president of the National American Woman Suffrage Association, arguing that Shaw's much-belittled tenure actually marked a renaissance of both NAWSA and the suffrage movement as a whole. Anna Howard Shaw: The Work of Woman Suffrage presents a clear and compelling portrait of a woman whose significance has too long been misinterpreted and misunderstood.

Book The British Women s Suffrage Campaign 1866 1928

Download or read book The British Women s Suffrage Campaign 1866 1928 written by Harold L. Smith and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2014-05-12 with total page 190 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This Seminar Study was the first book to trace the British women’s suffrage campaign from its origins in the 1860s through to the achievement of equal suffrage in 1928. In this second edition, Smith provides new evidence drawn from the author’s research on how the main post-1918 women’s organisation (the NUSEC) worked with Conservative Party women to persuade the Conservative Party to endorse equal franchise rights. Smith focuses on the actions of reformers and their opponents, with due attention paid to the campaigns in Scotland and Wales as well as the movements in England. He explores why women’s suffrage was such a contentious issue, and how women gained the vote despite opponents’ fears that it would undermine gender boundaries. Suitable for students studying the Suffrage Movement, modern British history and the history of gender.

Book Women and the Labour Movement in Scotland 1850 1914

Download or read book Women and the Labour Movement in Scotland 1850 1914 written by Eleanor Gordon and published by . This book was released on 1991 with total page 338 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A study of working women in Scotland in the late 1900s, this book uncovers the patterns of employment, involvement in and relationship to trade unions, and the forms of workplace resistance and struggles in which these women engaged. Focusing particularly on women working in Dundee's jute industry, Gordon integrates labor and gender history, which challenges many assumptions about the organizational apathy of women workers and the inevitable division between workplace and domestic ideologies. This book makes an important contribution to current historiographical debate over the sexual division of labor, working-class consciousness, domestic ideologies, and to the history of women in Scotland.

Book Indian Suffragettes

Download or read book Indian Suffragettes written by Sumita Mukherjee and published by Oxford University Press. This book was released on 2018-04-16 with total page 375 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Popular depictions of campaigns for women’s suffrage in films and literature have invariably focused on Western suffrage movements. The fact that Indian women built up a vibrant suffrage movement in the twentieth century has been largely neglected. The Indian ‘suffragettes’ were not only actively involved in campaigns within the Indian subcontinent, they also travelled to Britain, America, Europe, and elsewhere, taking part in transnational discourses on feminism, democracy, and suffrage. Indian Suffragettes focuses on the different geographical spaces in which Indian women were operating. Covering the period from the 1910s until 1950, it shows how Indian women campaigning for suffrage positioned themselves within an imperial system and invoked various identities, whether regional, national, imperial, or international, in the context of debates about the vote. Significantly, this volume analyses how the global connections that were forged influenced social and political change in the Indian subcontinent, highlighting Indian mobility at a time when they were colonial subjects.
