Book Scottish Wit Wisdom

Download or read book Scottish Wit Wisdom written by Betty Kirkpatrick and published by Crombie Jardine Publishing. This book was released on 2007-09-01 with total page 160 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Scotland has had its fair share of comedians, both professional and self-styled, but the wit of Scotland is not traditionally of the ha-ha, belly-laugh variety. It's rather of the understated, wry-smile type, known in Scotland as 'pawkie' humour. The Concise Scots Dictionary defines 'pawkie' as having a matter-of-fact, humorously critical outlook on life, characterized by a sly, quiet wit and this sums it up very well. Alas, this dry stryle of humour has the disadvantage that, unlike the obvious joke, it can go unnoticed. It's partly for this reason that the Scots have acquired a reputation for being dour or humourless, but often the fault has been with the hearers not recognizing wit when it was presented to them. There is less need to explain the wisdom of the Scots, since Scotland, especially considering its size, has produced over the centuries a great number of people who have made a significant contribution to the shaping of the world. These have included people from a wide range of disciplines, such as poets, philosophers, novelists, artists, architects, engineers, explorers, doctors, scientists and so on, and the thoughts of some of these are included in the selection of sayings and quotations in this book.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: What is it about Scotland that people love so much? Scotland is famous for many things, as any Scotsman will happily tell you. The list of Scottish inventions is as long as Loch Ness, stretching from penicillin and the telephone to Irn Bru and Grand Theft Auto but, while that Scotsman is busy explaining how Scotland gave the world whisky, television and Long John Silver, spare a thought for the nation and its people. The Scots are a peculiar race with characters as varied and changeable as the unpredictable Scottish weather. In Scotland people will tell you that they love the summer, it's one of the best days of the year, and that wry sense of humour is what inspires The Wicked Wit of Scotland. This funny and beautifully observed book pulls together stories, quotes, quips and anecdotes from Scots talking about Scotland and others from all over the world relating what they most admire about the country that Harry Potter author J. K. Rowling described as 'one of the most hauntingly beautiful places in the world. The history is fascinating, the men are handsome and the whisky is delicious. But don't eat the macaroni pies.' Featuring wit and wisdom from writers such as Armando Iannucci and Compton Mackenzie, Stanley Baxter and Neil Munro, the sometimes dubious delights of Scottish cuisine are discussed, along with the culture, folklore, politics and sport that will help us to understand just what makes Scotland tick.

Book Essays on David Hume Medical Men and the Scottish Enlightenment

Download or read book Essays on David Hume Medical Men and the Scottish Enlightenment written by Roger L. Emerson and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2016-05-13 with total page 349 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Scottish Enlightenment was a period of intellectual and scientific progress, in a country previously considered to be marginal to the European intellectual scene. Yet the enlightenment was not about politeness or civic humanism, but something more basic - the making of an improved society which could compete in every way in a rapidly changing world. David Hume, writing in 1752, commented that 'industry, knowledge and humanity are linked together by an indissoluble chain'. Collectively this volume of essays embraces many of the topics which Hume included under 'industry, knowledge and humanity': from the European Enlightenment and the Scots relation to it, to Scottish social history and its relation to religion, science and medicine. Overarching themes of what it meant to be enlightened in the eighteenth century are considered alongside more specific studies of notable figures of the period, such as Archibald Campbell, 3rd Duke of Argyll, and David Hume, and the training and number of Scottish medical students. Together, the volume provides an opportunity to step back and reconsider the Scottish Enlightenment in its broader context and to consider what new directions this field of study might take.

Book Kingship of the Scots 842 1292

Download or read book Kingship of the Scots 842 1292 written by A A M Duncan and published by Edinburgh University Press. This book was released on 2016-08-30 with total page 400 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: First published in 2002, and here introduced by Dauvit Broun as a core text in Scottish medieval history, this classic work is considered one of the most invaluable critiques of kingship in Scotland during the nation's foundations. In the early years of the period a custom of succession within one royal lineage allowed the Gaelic kingdom to grow in authority and extent. The Norman Conquest of England altered the balance of power between the north and south, and the relationship between the two kingdoms, which had never been easy, became unstable. When Scotland became kingless in 1286, Edward I exploited the succession debate between Balliol and Bruce and set claim to overlordship of Scotland until Bruce's coronation fixed the right of succession by law for Scottish kingship. In a meticulous account of this period, Professor Duncan disentangles the power struggles during the 'Great Cause' between the Balliols and the Bruces, and of the actions, motives and decisive interventions of Edward I. The Kingship of the Scots is historical scholarship at its best - thoughtful, challenging, incisive and readable.
