Book Scottish Wit Wisdom

Download or read book Scottish Wit Wisdom written by Betty Kirkpatrick and published by Crombie Jardine Publishing. This book was released on 2007-09-01 with total page 160 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Scotland has had its fair share of comedians, both professional and self-styled, but the wit of Scotland is not traditionally of the ha-ha, belly-laugh variety. It's rather of the understated, wry-smile type, known in Scotland as 'pawkie' humour. The Concise Scots Dictionary defines 'pawkie' as having a matter-of-fact, humorously critical outlook on life, characterized by a sly, quiet wit and this sums it up very well. Alas, this dry stryle of humour has the disadvantage that, unlike the obvious joke, it can go unnoticed. It's partly for this reason that the Scots have acquired a reputation for being dour or humourless, but often the fault has been with the hearers not recognizing wit when it was presented to them. There is less need to explain the wisdom of the Scots, since Scotland, especially considering its size, has produced over the centuries a great number of people who have made a significant contribution to the shaping of the world. These have included people from a wide range of disciplines, such as poets, philosophers, novelists, artists, architects, engineers, explorers, doctors, scientists and so on, and the thoughts of some of these are included in the selection of sayings and quotations in this book.

Book excerpt: This funny and beautifully observed book pulls together humorous stories, funny quotes, quips and anecdotes about this small but remarkable country. Featuring wit and wisdom from writers such as Armando Iannucci, Compton Mackenzie, Stanley Baxter and Neil Munro, this light-hearted book celebrates Scottish wit at its best while looking at the culture, folklore, politics and sport that make up Scotland.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Humours of Scottish Life This book has been written at the repeated solicitation of very many friends. Becoming acquainted to some extent with the repertoire of Scottish wit and humour which I happen to possess, they have often urged me to put it into a permanent form. I have not given it the title of Reminiscences, but it will be observed that many of the incidents are of that nature. They are illustrative of Scottish humour on the part of people in different grades of life. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book Mr Punch s Scottish Humour

Download or read book Mr Punch s Scottish Humour written by Various and published by DigiCat. This book was released on 2022-06-02 with total page 173 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Mr. Punch's Scottish Humour is a part of Punch Library of Humour, a book series of volumes of selected Punch Magazine sketches, described as cream of Scotland's national humor, contributed by the masters of the comic draughtsmanship and popular wits of the age to 'Punch'. The work is edited by Sir John Alexander Hammerton. Around seventy-five percent of the jokes appearing in Punch came from Scotsmen, so it is a reasonable assumption that the bulk of the accounts in this collection have originated from the north of the border. The text prepares the reader to laugh with "Mr. Punch" at this collection of Scottish humor. Expressing the objective, the text states that it was "Designed to provide in a series of volumes, each complete in itself, the cream of our national humour, contributed by the masters of comic draughtsmanship and the leading wits of the age to "Punch," from its beginning in 1841 to the present day."
