Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The city of Glasgow, formerly one of the largest industrial centres in the world, was once responsible for building about one-quarter of the world's railway locomotives. This was complemented by a massive urban railway network: the second largest in the UK. However, the Beeching Report of 1963 inevitably took its toll on Glasgow. This book examines the changing face of Glasgow's railways ever since, starting with the period of rationalisation and industrial decline that followed. It also explores the revival enjoyed in the latter half of the twentieth century, with lines re-opened and modern rolling stock being introduced. And with Glasgow hosting the 2014 Commonwealth Games, we take a look at the emphasis being placed on the railway as further development work takes place.

Download or read book Steam Finale written by Brian J. Dickson and published by . This book was released on 2003-02-13 with total page 160 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: As with other BR regions in the era post 1955, there was an increasingly rapid decline of steam on the Scottish Region from the late 1950s onwards as the products of the Modernisation Plan gradually emerged. For a variety of reasons, most notably as a result of the retention of pre-Grouping designs (such as the ex-NBR 'J36s') in front line service and the decision to restore four examples of the pre-Grouping classes for main service in the pre-1923 livery. Scotland was a popular destination for railway enthusiasts from the late 1950s onwards. Brian Dickson as a resident of Edinburgh was more fortunate than many in that he was recording the contemporary scene in and around his native city. During the years from the late 1950s until the end of ScR steam in 1966 he recorded much of the transition from steam in the area to the south of a line from Fort William to Aberdeen. This book is the first in a new mini series that will include 200 mono illustrations, largely unpublished, along with introduction and detailed captions, recording the final decade of steam operation. There have been no recent titles using the same series name. There was Steam Finale North published in the 1970s, but this is long out of print. There have been a number of Scottish railway titles over the years. These include: On Highlands Lines, On West Highlands Lines, On Glasgow & South Western Lines, On the Waverley Route, Lost Line: Scotland, Scottish Railways Then & Now

Book An Historical Geography of Railways in Great Britain and Ireland

Download or read book An Historical Geography of Railways in Great Britain and Ireland written by David Turnock and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2016-12-05 with total page 378 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Although a great deal has been published on the economic, social and engineering history of nineteenth-century railways, the work of historical geographers has been much less conspicuous. This overview by David Turnock goes a long way towards restoring the balance. It details every important aspect of the railway’s influence on spatial distribution of economic and social change, providing a full account of the nineteenth-century geography of the British Isles seen in the context of the railway. The book reviews and explains the shape of the developing railway network, beginning with the pre-steam railways and connections between existing road and water communications and the new rail lines. The author also discusses the impact of the railways on the patterns of industrial, urban and rural change throughout the century. Throughout, the historical geography of Ireland is treated in equal detail to that of Great Britain.
