Scott urges Gavin to visit him in New York, welcoming the chance to explain events that have transpired over the past nine yearsSusannahs manipulation; his homeless life sleeping on the New York streets; and his prison sentence for a crime he didnt commit. Though this punishment eased his guilty conscience, Scott did not intend to become a killer. Scott yearns to return to Martinique. He could be arrested, but the urge to be reunited with his family is too strong to resist. Even as he plans, however, a tempestuous storm is brewing with potentially fatal results.

Book excerpt: The oeuvre of Scottish artist Scott Myles is strongly gestural. It consists of photographs, objects, serigraphs, paintings and performance-based projects--a kind of reactivation of ideas on the valuation of art and social reality by means of the re-use of already established aesthetic codes. Thus, along with known art-historical works and their themes, concepts such as generosity or communication play a big role, as well as the involvement of the subject in his/her own environment. Myles' work, however, also always deals with his experience as an artist, with the role of the viewer and a certain openly-avowed romanticism. Along with all of this is a high degree of fictionalization, and, included in these fictions, the potential for producing art. This volume offers a comprehensive look into Myles' artistic production from 1999 to 2006.

Book excerpt: Maieusis pays tribute to the highly influential work of Myles Burnyeat, whose contributions to the study of ancient philosophy have done much to enhance the profile of the subject around the world. What is distinctive about his work is his capacity to deepen our understanding of the relation between ancient and modern thought, and to combine the best of contemporary philosophy - its insights as well as its rigour - with a deep sensitivity to classical texts. Nineteen of the world's leading experts in the field examine a wide range of topics in ancient philosophy, with a particular focus on Plato. Topics include Socrates and the nature of philosophy, the different aspects of eros in the Symposium, Republic and Phaedrus, the Phaedo's arguments for immortality, wars and warriors in Plato, and the different aspects of the cave allegory in the Republic. .

Book Honor on the Line

Download or read book Honor on the Line written by Robert J. Scott and published by iUniverse. This book was released on 2012-07-27 with total page 320 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: It was the fall of 1940, and Americans turned to college football for relief from the turbulent world around them. The Depression still had its grip on the nation and, across the Atlantic, the Battle of Britain raged. As war crept closer every day, the nations first peacetime draft called Americans to the defense of the country. While the great Tom Harmon of Michigan set new standards on the gridiron, on other fields black stars struggled for the right to play. At Stanford, coaching genius Clark Shaughnessy reinvented the game and in the process engineered the greatest turnaround in the history of college football. But the team everybody was talking about was Cornell. Fueled by the most powerful offense in the country, the Big Red dominated the national rankings until, on a snowy field at Dartmouth, they eked out a win with a touchdown on the last play of the gameor did they? When it came to light that the touchdown had been scored on a grievous error by the officials, Cornell, undefeated and in the race for the national championship, faced a wrenching decision. The 1940 season was one of the most exciting on recordand one that taught America about the values that really matter.

Book excerpt: "Millions of words are written in this field every year, but few better than those that come from I.J. Schecter." --"Jane Carter, Editor, " Golf Monthly "In golf, there are the elite, and then there are the rest of us. We others, lumped together in the Duffer Zone--you know us from the formal announcements we send out whenever we break 100--are like the thousands who finish mid-pack in a big-city marathon: happily unremarkable, content just to enjoy the sunshine with some like-minded others, unconcerned about the guy who crossed the tape forty minutes earlier. We are competent but not brilliant. We are enthusiastic, though a far cry from intense. Our fairway woods are mostly reliable, but put a 3-iron in our hands and we might as well be swinging a screwdriver." To the low- and high-handicapper alike, golf represents an ongoing quest and an exhilarating challenge. In this brilliant collection, award-winning author I.J. Schecter embarks on a dogged pursuit of golf's elusive Holy Grail--breaking 100--with hilarious results. Clinging to boundless (and often groundless) optimism, Schecter attempts to untangle the secret to good golf in increasingly desperate ways--like playing five different courses in five days, accompanying a greenskeeping team on their pre-dawn rounds, trying to replicate one of Tiger Woods' legendary shots, and turning to a three-year-old for guidance. Like any golfer, he comes to realize that the journey, though demanding, proves its own reward. A unique book from a gifted writer, "Slices" is an eloquent, witty celebration of both the game of golf and the unwavering efforts of those who try, again and again, to tame it.

Book The Pseudo Platonic Seventh Letter

Download or read book The Pseudo Platonic Seventh Letter written by Myles Burnyeat and published by . This book was released on 2015 with total page 241 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Seventh Platonic Letter describes Plato's attempts to turn the ruler of Sicily, Dionysius II, into a philosopher ruler along the lines of the Republic. It explains why Plato turned from politics to philosophy in his youth and how he then tried to apply his ideas to actual politics later on. It also sets out his views about language, writing and philosophy. As such, it represents a potentially crucial source of information about Plato, who tells us almost nothing about himself in his dialogues. But is it genuine? Scholars have debated the issue for centuries, although recent opinion has moved in its favour. The origin of this book was a seminar given in Oxford in 2001 by Myles Burnyeat and Michael Frede, two of the most eminent scholars of ancient philosophy in recent decades. Michael Frede begins by casting doubt on the Letter by looking at it from the general perspective of letter writing in antiquity, when it was quite normal to fabricate letters by famous figures from the past. Both then attack the authenticity of the letter head-on by showing how its philosophical content conflicts with what we find in the Platonic dialogues. They also reflect on the question of why the Letter was written, whether as an attempt to exculpate Plato from the charge of meddling in politics (Frede), or as an attempt to portray, through literary means, the ways in which human weakness and emotions can lead to disasters in political life (Burnyeat).
