Book Scots Folk Song Classic Reprint

Download or read book Scots Folk Song Classic Reprint written by Marjory Kennedy-Fraser and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-12 with total page 30 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Scots Folk Song On the interpretative side the ancient song and ballad indeed presuppose a traditional culture, a culture which, as Yeats has pointed out in his essay on Popular Poetry, cannot be taken for granted in these days, and much study and imagination, therefore, may have to be brought to bear on the subject before it will yield its full message. Such is one of the peculiar difficulties on the interpretative side. On the technical side there is much to accomplish, for it is a great mistake to imagine that simple Scots songs are simple in performance. The voice must be cultured and controlled. But after studies in voice-production have been made, we are only at the beginning of things. Although a fine cantabile type thereis in Scots Song, but few of the best of our songs can be regarded as mere opportunities for vocal display. Indeed in some of the character songs and lilts (in which we are very rich) you must put your voice in your pocket, so to speak, and bring out only so much as is required at the moment to supply the necessary lilt and colour. On the purely musical side it cannot be too much insisted upon with young singers - and some not so very young either - that accent and shape, beauty of form, intelligibility of phrase, and the hypnotism of rhythm which plays such an all-important part in all art - can be attained only by carefully worked out gradations and that such gradations can be achieved only by fierce economy, by cutting away as well as by adding on, by lessening the tone-quantity in one place that it may stand out in relief in another. If, indeed, you begin a tone-curving phrase with one shadow of a shade too much tone, you may from the first have made your' intended crescendo curve impossible. And if - after a point, an accent arrived at, worked up to - you lean with the faintest too much stress or too long duration on a weak following beat - a common rhythmical feature in Scots music - you have wiped out again your climax, your point, you have destroyed your lilt, blurred your melodic shape. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Scottish Song: Its Wealth, Wisdom, and Social Significance The title which this little volume bears, sufficiently explains the reason of its appearance, and whatever small claims it may be able to advance for originality in a theme so often and so ably handled by experts in the folk-lore and the popular music of their country. I have no pretensions either to the scientific knowledge or to the curious literary research which might enable me to compete with these men of Skill, and to share in any part of the praise which they have so justly earned; I only thought I might do some good, in an age urged by various stimulating forces to seek after what is new rather than to hold by what is true, if I should present, in a sort of dramatic totality, the wealth of moral, intellectual, and aesthetical nutriment of the best kind that lies stored in our heritage of national song. My task, therefore, was simply one of collection and. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book Notes on Scottish Song Classic Reprint

Download or read book Notes on Scottish Song Classic Reprint written by Robert Burns and published by . This book was released on 2015-07-19 with total page 200 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Notes on Scottish Song The principal part (I) of the following text is a verbatim copy of holograph Notes of Robert Burns in an interleaved copy of the first four volumes of Johnsons Scots Musical Museum, which belonged to Robert Riddell of Glenriddell, the friend and neighbour of Burns at Ellisland. Then follow (Ii) the Notes written by Riddell in the same volumes. The interleaves in the volumes being incomplete, I have described (Iii) the missing leaves, with the songs which faced them in the volumes, with a copy of three important notes which R.C. Cromek inserted in his Reliqucs of Robcfi Burns 1808, as from the hand of Burns. Obviously these cannot be verified. The last part (Iv) consists of a series of spurious notes, also printed by Cromek in the Reliqucs. These are not in the volumes, and never were there. The object of the present small book is simply to correct the misleading statements of Cromek, whose work was received with acclamation, and was so successful that a second edition was printed in 1809. In the year 1813 it was again published as the fifth volume of Curries Works of Robert BurnSy and the Notes now referred to, being a considerable and important part of the volume, have remained, and have been accepted as the authentic waiting of the poet. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Book of Scottish Song: Collected and Illustrated With Historical and Critical Notices, and an Essay on the Song-Writers of Scotland This work was undertaken with the object of laying before the public, in a single volume, and at a moderate price, a coupnsnsusxva gomcrros or run 801103 or scotland, ancient and modern, accompanied with such particulars regarding their history, age, or authorship, as could be gathered from the liter ary records of the country, or might be elicited from personal inquiry and research among the lovers of song. It may excite surprise to know, but nevertheless it is undeniable, that no publication of the kind here aimed at, whether as regards extent of design in text and commentary, or adaptation in size and price for general circulation, has hitherto been attempted, amid the multifarious song-collections that have issued from the press. Ritson, near the close of the last century, was the first, as an editor of Scottish song, who endea voured to ascertain the age and authorship of the pieces in his work, and his example has been followed by one or two other editors; but the compilations adverted to are at once limited in their range, and removed by their cost be yond the reach of ordinary purchasers. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Scottish Songs, Vol. 1 of 2 From these motives, and with these views, the present' collection was undertaken. It will be found to contain'all the songs written in and regarding Scotland, which have either the me rit of being Old and characteristic, or that of being new and popular. No original songs are admitted, as in most other collections because it is inconsistent with the idea of a collection of the best songs of a country, that some should be accepted which have not yet endured the or deal of public taste. In an Introductory Essay, a view is given of all the facts known with cer tainty regarding Scottish Song in general and to almost all the songs are appended notes, con taining such anecdotes, and other pieces of in formation, referring to them individually, as the editor considered necessary for their illus tration, or at least mentioning the earliest print ed collection in which they are known to have; appeared. No songs of an indecorous nature, are introduced while from one or two others which are included, the objectionable passages. Are silently omitted; the editor judging it bet ter to fit his book, by that very slight sacrifice, for the use of the tasteful, the fair, and the young, than to consult the wishes of the antiquary; who, after all, has but little reason to complain of such violations, seeing that the songs are to be found, in all their native boau ty, in the collections of Ramsay and Herd.
