Excerpt: One day I walked into these mountains, and I never came all the way back. For though Scotland's mountains may not be the highest in the world, they are certainly amongst the most awe-inspiring and enchanting. From the towering pinnacles of Skye, to the high rolling plateau of the Cairngorms; from the bonnie braes of Ben Lomond to the weeping cliffs of Glencoe; from the rocky battlements that encircle Loch Arkaig, to the gentle folds of Ben Lawers as it spills down to Loch Tay: here are offered scenes of unrivalled splendour, landscapes of unparalleled variety, and a magic ground for personal connection, inspiration, and transformation. These are places of accessible adventure - we leave behind the safety of the lush glen to cross the swooping moor, clamber up through craggy corridors, and with silver chuckling burn then spatey cascade as our sometime guide we reach at last the grand summits of these lands. Here beneath a hundred rainbows lie a hundred pots of gold - unclaimed scenic ingots that are yours for the taking and to which I hope to lead you, on a journey for body, for mind, and perhaps for something deeper.

Download or read book One Bad Day After Another written by Max Folsom and published by FriesenPress. This book was released on 2021-07-14 with total page 250 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Baker Somerset was a Scotland Yard Detective sent to Ottawa to help solve a brutal kidnapping case. After the suspect put four bullets in her, she decided to stay in Ottawa and open her own detective agency. One morning, the body of a British diplomat is found at her office door. Hunting his killer, she learns the murder is tied to the kidnapping that brought her to Canada, and in the process, she unearths bribery, fraud, and illegal activity in the military arms and equipment industry. With billions of dollars at stake, the perpetrators play rough; willing to kill anyone who stands in their way. As the risks to her life and career multiply and bodies begin to pile up, Somerset enlists her friends: Duchess “Keys” Brown, a vivacious Jamaican computer guru; Joe Manning, a martial arts expert; and Charles Stroud, her old Scotland Yard partner. They sift through a maze of conflicting evidence, numerous dead ends, and frightening danger to bring those responsible to justice. ONE BAD DAY AFTER ANOTHER is a book for crime and mystery enthusiasts. Infusing the fast pace and high stakes of modern thrillers and hard-boiled detectives’ ‘take no prisoners’ attitude into the traditional mystery genre, Folsom delivers a nail-biting story.

Book The Future of HM Coastguard in Scotland

Download or read book The Future of HM Coastguard in Scotland written by Great Britain: Parliament: House of Commons: Scottish Affairs Committee and published by The Stationery Office. This book was released on 2012-11-15 with total page 74 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This report expresses concern about the decision to close two of Scotland's Maritime Rescue Co-ordination Centres and says Government must do more to explain the rationale for the decision and how it will ensure that the same high standard of service is maintained, with fewer resources. Despite an extensive Government consultation, those on the front line felt they had been excluded from the process. There has been no satisfactory explanation for the decision to close Clyde and Forth MRCCs, which will leave the central belt of Scotland, where the population is most densely concentrated, without a Coastguard station. The Committee is particularly concerned at the loss of local knowledge resulting from the closures. Both the Minister and the Chief Executive of the Maritime and Coastguard Agency have assured the Committee that robust and extensive testing was being done before the closure of Clyde Maritime Rescue Co-ordination Centre to ensure that the stations taking over its area of responsibility would do so seamlessly and continue to provide the level of search and rescue cover which the public has a right to expect. The Committee understands the Government's argument that the changes are intended to allow HM Coastguard to do more, better, with less, and says it "hopes that this is indeed the case". The Government must keep the Committee updated on the impact of the proposed changes, and provide reassurance after 31 December 2012 that the Scottish coastline is still being served to the same high standard as before

Book Town and Country Planning in the UK

Download or read book Town and Country Planning in the UK written by Vincent Nadin and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2014-12-05 with total page 952 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Town and country planning has never been more important to the UK, nor more prominent in national debate. Planning generates great controversy: whether it’s spending £80m and four years’ inquiry into Heathrow’s Terminal 5, or the 200 proposed wind turbines in the Shetland Isles. On a smaller scale telecoms masts, take-aways, house extensions, and even fences are often the cause of local conflict. Town and Country Planning in the UK has been extensively revised by a new author group. This 15th Edition incorporates the major changes to planning introduced by the coalition government elected in 2010, particularly through the National Planning Policy Framework and associated practice guidance and the Localism Act. It provides a critical discussion of the systems of planning, the procedures for managing development and land use change, and the mechanisms for implementing policy and proposals. It reviews current policy for sustainable development and the associated economic, social and environmental themes relevant to planning in both urban and rural contexts. Contemporary arrangements are explained with reference to their historical development, the influence of the European Union, the roles of central and local government, and developing social and economic demands for land use change. Detailed consideration is given to • the nature of planning and its historical evolution • the role of the EU, central, regional and local government • mechanisms for developing policy, and managing these changes • policies for guiding and delivering housing and economic development • sustainable development principles for planning, including pollution control • the importance of design in planning • conserving the heritage • community engagement in planning The many recent changes to the system are explained in detail – the new national planning policy framework; the impact of the loss of the regional tier in planning and of the insertion of neighbourhood level planning; the transition from development control to development management; the continued and growing importance of environmental matters in planning; community engagement; partnership working; changes to planning gain and the introduction of the Community Infrastructure Levy; and new initiatives across a number of other themes. Notes on further reading are provided and at the end of the book there is an extensive bibliography, maintaining its reputation as the ‘bible’ of British planning.
