Download or read book The Making of the Scottish Rural Landscape written by David Turnock and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2016-12-05 with total page 374 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book looks at the evolution of rural settlement in Scotland from the Mesolithic period through to the improving movement of the 18th and 19th centuries. The main emphasis is on changes in society and technology, but the book also considers how the development of the physical landscape laid the foundation for such changes. The author strikes a balance between general perspectives (including relevant contextual materials such as the political structures) and local studies, with much emphasis on individual sites. Lack of documentation prior to the 10th century places particular importance on the archaeological evidence, but imaginative interpretation of this evidence has led to a major re-evaluation. Ideas emphasizing continuity of settlement and local adaptation are replacing older ’invasionist’ theories emphasizing Celtic war lords and broch-building pirates.

Book excerpt: Arthur & Rosalind Eedle spent some years researching the history of the centuries before Augustine, coupled with field trips to Cornwall and Somerset. Fired by the enthusiasm of men like Henry Ardern Lewis who had the same life-long urgency to prove that Britain was the first nation to espouse Christianity, they have made known their results in this volume. It is a detective story which grips one's attention and imagination to reveal the hand and purpose of God for our nation.

Download or read book The Souterrains of Southern Pictland written by F.T. Wainwright and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2015-05-15 with total page 287 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The archaeological monuments known as souterrains, particularly characteristic of eastern Scotland from Aberdeenshire to Fife, have long been a mystery. When this book was originally published in 1963, recent investigation on two of these types of works, at Ardestie and Carlungie in Angus had shed more light. This book combines two excavation reports with a re-consideration of the problems that surrounded these ‘earth houses’ and their builders. It presents a summary of all recorded souterrains between the Dee and the Forth, offering great insight into these structures and also into the status of this kind of archaeology at this time.
