Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Hollywood careers of Aaron Copland and Hanns Eisler brought the composers and their high art sensibility into direct conflict with the premier producer of America's potent mass culture. Drawn by Hollywood's potential to reach—and edify—the public, Copland and Eisler expertly wove sophisticated musical ideas into Hollywood and, each in their own distinctive way, left an indelible mark on movie history. Sally Bick's dual study of Copland and Eisler pairs interpretations of their writings on film composing with a close examination of their first Hollywood projects: Copland's music for Of Mice and Men and Eisler's score for Hangmen Also Die! Bick illuminates the different ways the composers treated a film score as means of expressing their political ideas on society, capitalism, and the human condition. She also delves into Copland's and Eisler's often conflicted attempts to adapt their music to fit Hollywood's commercial demands, an enterprise that took place even as they wrote hostile critiques of the film industry.

  • Release : 2011-01-01
  • ISBN : 1609944739
  • Pages : 264 pages

Download or read book Making the Grades written by Todd Farley and published by Berrett-Koehler Publishers. This book was released on 2011-01-01 with total page 264 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In this alternately amusing and appalling exposé of the standardized test industry, fifteen-year veteran Todd Farley describes statisticians who make decisions about students without even looking at their test answers; state education officials willing to change the way tests are scored whenever they don't like the results; and massive, multi-national, for-profit testing companies who regularly opt for expediency and profit over the altruistic educational goals of teaching and learning. Although there are absurd moments--as when Farley and coworkers had to grade students based on how they described the taste of their favorite food-- the enormous importance of standardized tests in the post “No Child Left Behind” era make this no laughing matter. “This book is dynamite! The nice personal voice makes it utterly accessible and enticing, wholly apart from the terribly important ammunition it provides to those of us in the `testing wars' at national and local levels.”—Jonathan Kozol, author of Savage Inequities

Book An Approach for Full Reinforcement based Biometric Score Fusion

Download or read book An Approach for Full Reinforcement based Biometric Score Fusion written by Mohamed Cheniti and published by Infinite Study. This book was released on 2024-01-01 with total page 13 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Multibiometric systems have the potential to mitigate error rates and address certain inherent weaknesses found in unimodal systems. This study introduces an innovative scheme for user recognition in multibiometric systems, centered on a score-level fusion framework. The foundation of this framework lies in the full reinforcement operator (FRO), specifically estimating FRO through generator functions associated with triangular norms (T-norms and T-conorm). The efficiency of the proposed method has been showcased through an extensive set of experiments carried out on four commonly available benchmark databases: all three partitions of the National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST) databases (Set 1, 2, 3), along with the XM2VTS database. Our method achieves superior accuracy compared to existing methods, reaching 100 % recognition on NIST-Set 1, 93.40 % on NIST-Set 2, and 94.54 % on the more challenging NIST-Set 3. The experimental findings illustrate that score fusion schemes based on FRO not only enhance verification rates when compared to current score-level fusion techniques (such as Asymmetric Aggregation Operators, Minimum, Maximum, T-norms, and Symmetric-Sum) but also offer a swift computational performance.

Book Settling Scores

    Book Details:
  • Author : David Monod
  • Publisher : Univ of North Carolina Press
  • Release : 2006-03-08
  • ISBN : 0807876445
  • Pages : 344 pages

Download or read book Settling Scores written by David Monod and published by Univ of North Carolina Press. This book was released on 2006-03-08 with total page 344 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Classical music was central to German national identity in the early twentieth century. The preeminence of composers such as Bach and Beethoven and artists such as conductor Wilhelm Furtwangler and pianist Walter Gieseking was cited by the Nazis as justification for German expansionism and as evidence of Aryan superiority. In the minds of many Americans, further German aggression could be prevented only if the population's faith in its moral and cultural superiority was shattered. In Settling Scores, David Monod examines the attempted "denazification" of the German music world by the Music Control Branch of the Information Control Division of Military Government. The occupying American forces barred from the stage and concert hall all former Nazi Party members and even anyone deemed to display an "authoritarian personality." They also imported European and American music. These actions, however, divided American officials and outraged German audiences and performers. Nonetheless, the long-term effects were greater than has been previously recognized, as German government officials regained local control and voluntarily limited their involvement in artistic life while promoting "new" (anti-Nazi) music.
