Book Great Lakes St Lawrence Basin Project on Adapting to the Impacts of Climate Change and Variability

Download or read book Great Lakes St Lawrence Basin Project on Adapting to the Impacts of Climate Change and Variability written by Linda D. Mortsch and published by . This book was released on 1996 with total page 190 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: There still is much uncertainty about the timing, the rate and the magnitude of climate change in the Great Lakes-St. Lawrence Basin (GLSLB); yet concern for potential impacts remains. The GLSLB contains 20 percent of the world's fresh water and is home to over 42.5 million people. It is a region rich in human and natural resources, with diverse economic activities and complex infrastructures. Significant economic restructuring and environmental changes are underway. Governments, industries and other Basin interests will have the added complication of managing the multiple activities within the Basin under the exacerbating conditions of potential climate change. This challenge must be addressed: first through research, and then by applying the research to all levels of management within the Basin.

Book Adapting to the Impacts of Climate Change and Variability

Download or read book Adapting to the Impacts of Climate Change and Variability written by and published by . This book was released on 1993 with total page 78 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Great Lakes-St. Lawrence Basin project is a multi-year undertaking that is part of the Canadian Federal Green Plan initiative. The goal of the project is to conduct interdisciplinary, integrated studies on the physical, biological, social, and economic impacts of climate change and variability for the area. Regional adaptation strategies to deal with a changing climate will also be explored. This report summarizes the discussions held by the working groups on water management, ecosystem health, land use and management, and human health. It also provides abstracts for papers presented on the project; on information in the decision-making and policy-making process for forestry, water resources, agriculture, and climate change; the state of understanding of climate-sensitive issues; and integration of the regional and economic impacts of climate change.

Book Potential Climate Change Effects on Great Lakes Hydrodynamics and Water Quality

Download or read book Potential Climate Change Effects on Great Lakes Hydrodynamics and Water Quality written by David C. L. Lam and published by ASCE Publications. This book was released on 1999-01-01 with total page 236 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This report provides a state-of-the-art review of the climate change effects on lake hydrodynamics and water quality. Most of the engineering cases in this book deal with the ability of existing infrastructure to cope with extreme weather conditions. The case studies are intended to illustrate the advancement in modeling research on lake hydrodynamics, thermal stratification, pollutant transport, and water quality by highlighting the climate change aspects in the application of these techniques. Topics include climate and lake responses, lake thermodynamics, large-scale circulation, wind-waves on large lakes, great lakes ice cover, and water quality.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Voices for the Watershed is a unique look at the singular and ecologically inter-connected region of the Great Lakes-St Lawrence watershed, including the headwater and upland regions. With contributions from experts from the United States, Quebec, and Ontario, this book offers an accessible introduction to the issues affecting the quality of our most essential and precious of natural resources - clean, fresh water - from headwater regions downstream to the Great lakes, the St Lawrence river, and ultimately the watershed's outflow to the sea. With thoughtful words and evocative photography, Voices for the Watershed promotes understanding and examines ecological problems, describing positive environmental actions and projects as well as ongoing concerns over the effects of pollution on wildlife and human health. The underlying themes throughout are that the drainage basins and ecosystems are under siege - from reckless land use decisions, soil erosion, acid rain, and massive habitat destruction - but that the situation is not hopeless. The authors feel strongly that education about the environmental threats - in the classroom and public forums - is essential to effecting positive change, and that conservation actions by citizen groups and individuals can be a driving force in effecting substantial reforms regarding environmental legislation and practices. Voices for the Watershed is an eye-opening look at not only the problems but possible solutions to help protect and preserve this resilient natural resource on which so many depend. Douglas Blakey (Upper Canada College), Serge Bourdon (Chateauguay Watershed Management Agency), Robert Brander (retired U.S. Forest Service and National Park Service), Dominique Brief (Alliance for Environmental Management), Louise Champoux (Environment Canada), Bruce Conn (Berry College), Kevin Coyle (National Environmental Education and Training Foundation), Brad Cundiff (Wildlands League), Jerry DeMarco (Sierra Legal Defence Fund), Jean-Luc DesGranges (Canadian Wildlife Service), Thomas A.
