Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Researchers in a number of disciplines deal with large text sets requiring both text management and text analysis. Faced with a large amount of textual data collected in marketing surveys, literary investigations, historical archives and documentary data bases, these researchers require assistance with organizing, describing and comparing texts. Exploring Textual Data demonstrates how exploratory multivariate statistical methods such as correspondence analysis and cluster analysis can be used to help investigate, assimilate and evaluate textual data. The main text does not contain any strictly mathematical demonstrations, making it accessible to a large audience. This book is very user-friendly with proofs abstracted in the appendices. Full definitions of concepts, implementations of procedures and rules for reading and interpreting results are fully explored. A succession of examples is intended to allow the reader to appreciate the variety of actual and potential applications and the complementary processing methods. A glossary of terms is provided.

Purchasers can usually download a free scanned copy of the original book (without typos) from the publisher. Not indexed. Not illustrated. 1891 edition. Excerpt: ... NOTE TO CHAPTER X. On Some Of The Precautions Requisite In The Use Of Statistics In Economic Reasonings. 1. Conditions of the reliability of statistical data.-- If arguments based on statistics are to be of any value, particular attention must be paid to the following points: (a) the sources from which the statistics are obtained, with special reference to their reliability; (6) their true meaning and significance; (c) their completeness or incompleteness as covering the whole range of the phenomena to which they relate; (d) the manner of their grouping, with special reference to the taking of averages. Each of these points may be briefly considered in turn1. The initial difficulty in the use of statistics is the possible inaccuracy of the original data. Statistics may be obtained and published officially, or they may be collected through private channels. Under the former of these conditions, the accuracy of the figures is sometimes practically unquestionable; as, for example, in the case of railway 1 In what follows I am specially indebted to Dr Giffen's Essays in Finance, First and Second Series; to papers on Statistics by Professor R. M. Smith in the Political Science Quarterly, the Quarterly Journal of Economics, and the Publications of the American Economic Association; and to various papers in the Journal of the Statistical Society. traffic receipts. But this is by no means the universal rule, even when official statistics are forthcoming. Thus up to 1854 the values of imports into this country were calculated at the prices of the early part of the eighteenth century. From 1854 to 1870 they were officially computed according to the best information obtainable. At the present time the values of both imports and exports are...

Book An Assessment of the SBIR Program at the National Science Foundation

Download or read book An Assessment of the SBIR Program at the National Science Foundation written by National Research Council and published by National Academies Press. This book was released on 2008-07-26 with total page 366 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Small Business Innovation Research (SBIR) program is one of the largest examples of U.S. public-private partnerships. Founded in 1982, SBIR was designed to encourage small business to develop new processes and products and to provide quality research in support of the many missions of the U.S. government, including health, energy, the environment, and national defense. In response to a request from the U.S. Congress, the National Research Council assessed SBIR as administered by the five federal agencies that together make up 96 percent of program expenditures. This book, one of six in the series, reports on the SBIR program at the National Science Foundation. The study finds that the SBIR program is sound in concept and effective in practice, but that it can also be improved. Currently, the program is delivering results that meet most of the congressional objectives, including stimulating technological innovation, increasing private-sector commercialization of innovations, using small businesses to meet federal research and development needs, and fostering participation by minority and disadvantaged persons. The book suggests ways in which the program can improve operations, continue to increase private-sector commercialization, and improve participation by women and minorities.

Book The SAGE Encyclopedia of Communication Research Methods

Download or read book The SAGE Encyclopedia of Communication Research Methods written by Mike Allen and published by SAGE Publications. This book was released on 2017-04-11 with total page 2013 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Communication research is evolving and changing in a world of online journals, open-access, and new ways of obtaining data and conducting experiments via the Internet. Although there are generic encyclopedias describing basic social science research methodologies in general, until now there has been no comprehensive A-to-Z reference work exploring methods specific to communication and media studies. Our entries, authored by key figures in the field, focus on special considerations when applied specifically to communication research, accompanied by engaging examples from the literature of communication, journalism, and media studies. Entries cover every step of the research process, from the creative development of research topics and questions to literature reviews, selection of best methods (whether quantitative, qualitative, or mixed) for analyzing research results and publishing research findings, whether in traditional media or via new media outlets. In addition to expected entries covering the basics of theories and methods traditionally used in communication research, other entries discuss important trends influencing the future of that research, including contemporary practical issues students will face in communication professions, the influences of globalization on research, use of new recording technologies in fieldwork, and the challenges and opportunities related to studying online multi-media environments. Email, texting, cellphone video, and blogging are shown not only as topics of research but also as means of collecting and analyzing data. Still other entries delve into considerations of accountability, copyright, confidentiality, data ownership and security, privacy, and other aspects of conducting an ethical research program. Features: 652 signed entries are contained in an authoritative work spanning four volumes available in choice of electronic or print formats. Although organized A-to-Z, front matter includes a Reader’s Guide grouping entries thematically to help students interested in a specific aspect of communication research to more easily locate directly related entries. Back matter includes a Chronology of the development of the field of communication research; a Resource Guide to classic books, journals, and associations; a Glossary introducing the terminology of the field; and a detailed Index. Entries conclude with References/Further Readings and Cross-References to related entries to guide students further in their research journeys. The Index, Reader’s Guide themes, and Cross-References combine to provide robust search-and-browse in the e-version.
