Download or read book Building an ESL Collection for Young Adults written by Laura McCaffery and published by Bloomsbury Publishing USA. This book was released on 1998-10-28 with total page 200 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This annotated bibliography of more than 500 recommended books meets the needs of teachers and librarians for reading materials for young adults for whom English is a second language. Laura McCaffery, who has many years of experience with collection development of ESL materials for young adults, has selected the best books on a variety of topics to meet curriculum and personal interest needs of young adults. Most of the books selected were published between 1992 and 1998. The bibliography is organized by topic: adventure, mystery, and suspense; biographies; career, workplace, life skills, and parenting; folktales, myths, poetry, and classics; ethnic diversity; history and geography; nature and science; and sports. Indexes by author, subject, title, and ethnic group make searching easy. Mainstreamed ESL students can use these books to better understand and make use of regular textbooks. Special ESL classes can use the recommended books as part of regular instruction. Most of the books recommended are for the intermediate or advanced beginner reading level in English, but some very easy books are also included. Most of the books are suitable for all learners from grades five through adult. Each entry contains a complete bibliographical citation, Fry Reading Level, Interest Level, Library of Congress subjects for cataloging, and a 50 to 200 word annotation describing the book and how it can be used by the librarian or teacher who is working with patrons or students. A list of distributors of print and nonprint ESL materials completes the work.

Book excerpt: 'Love or knowledge: which would you choose?' A moving, comical and eye-opening story of four young women fighting for education and self-determination against the larger backdrop of women's suffrage. 1896. Girton College, Cambridge, the first college in Britain to admit women. The Girton girls study ferociously and match their male peers grade for grade. Yet, when the men graduate, the women leave with nothing but the stigma of being a 'blue stocking' - an unnatural, educated woman. They are denied degrees and go home unqualified and unmarriageable. In Jessica Swale's debut play, Blue Stockings, Tess Moffat and her fellow first years are determined to win the right to graduate. But little do they anticipate the hurdles in their way: the distractions of love, the cruelty of the class divide or the strength of the opposition, who will do anything to stop them. The play follows them over one tumultuous academic year, in their fight to change the future of education. Blue Stockings received its professional premiere at Shakespeare's Globe, London, in August 2013, directed by John Dove.

Book She who Tells a Story

Download or read book She who Tells a Story written by Kristen Gresh and published by MFA Publications. This book was released on 2013 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: She Who Tells a Story introduces the pioneering work of twelve leading women photographers from Iran and the Arab world: Jananne Al-Ani, Boushra Almutawakel, Gohar Dashti, Rana El Nemr, Lalla Essaydi, Shadi Ghadirian, Tanya Habjouqa, Rula Halawani, Nermine Hammam, Rania Matar, Shirin Neshat and Newsha Tavakolian. As the Middle East has undergone unparalleled change over the past twenty years, and national and personal identities have been dismantled and rebuilt, these artists have tackled the very notion of representation with passion and power. Their provocative images, which range in style from photojournalism to staged and manipulated visions, explore themes of gender stereotypes, war and peace and personal life, all the while confronting nostalgic Western notions about women of the Orient and exploring the complex political and social landscapes of their home regions. Enhanced with biographical and interpretive essays, and including more than 100 reproductions of photographs and film and video stills, this book challenges us to set aside preconceptions about this part of the world and share in the vision of a group of vibrant artists as they claim the right to tell their own stories in images of great sophistication, expressiveness and beauty.

Book A Citizen soldier s Civil War

Download or read book A Citizen soldier s Civil War written by Alvin C. Voris and published by . This book was released on 2002 with total page 321 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: When "citizen-soldier" Alvin Coe Voris wrote his first letter to his beloved wife, Lydia, in 1861, he embarked on a correspondence that would span the duration of the Civil War. A former Ohio legislator, Voris filled his letters with keen insights into the daily life of soldiers, army politics, and such issues as the morality of combat and the evils of slavery. Often heartwrenching and invariably gripping, the 428 letters collected in this volume form an unbroken and unique Civil War chronicle. Voris's personal merit and political influence earned him the rank of brevet major general of volunteers. Known among his men as "Old Promptly," he strongly emphasized the soldierly precepts of order and duty on the battlefield. As leader of the 67th Ohio Volunteer Infantry Regiment, Voris fought in the First Battle of Kernstown, Stonewall Jackson's only defeat. Though wounded in the attack on Fort Wagner during the siege of Charleston, he served in northern Virginia until General Lee's surrender at Appomattox Courthouse. Some of Voris's most impassioned letters depict his firsthand observations of slavery's effects on the nation as he condemned the cruelty of slaveowners and agonized over the predicament of his fellow man. At one point, Voris led an African American brigade consisting of nearly 3,000 soldiers, and soon after their first combat he wrote Lydia to praise the men's valor and fighting spirit. Discharged from military command in 1865, he remained an active, dedicated supporter of equal rights for African Americans. Edited and annotated by Jerome Mushkat, this exceptionally complete collection of letters reveals not only the daily life of a Civil War soldier but also the ideals and aspirations of a man of conscience whom duty called to the battlefield.
