Book excerpt: Partant de l'expérience scolaire en lycée professionnel (LP), cet ouvrage tente de saisir le sens que les élèves préparant un CAP ou un BEP confèrent au fait d'aller à l'école et d'apprendre. La spécificité de l'enseignement professionnel en milieu scolaire peut être cernée à partir de la dualité forme scolaire/forme professionnelle. Quelque arbitraire que soit cette séparation, il semble bien, néanmoins, que les élèves, comme les professionnels de l'éducation, raisonnent en opposant ces deux formes ou, du moins, en les affectant de caractéristiques propres, comme si " apprendre en classe " était foncièrement différent d'" apprendre en atelier " (ou en pratique). Si l'expérience des élèves est toujours confrontation avec des savoirs, elle est aussi rencontre avec des enseignants supposés leur " apprendre ". Or, pour être heuristiquement pertinente, une sociologie des formes de rapport aux savoirs peut partir de l'interaction entre les enseignants et les apprenants. Dans cette perspective, on pourra saisir les cohérences et les décalages entre ce que les enseignants et ce que les élèves entendent par " apprendre ". En allant plus loin, nous pouvons aussi observer que le discours du professeur sur ses élèves procède de l'expérience qu'avait le professeur quand il était élève, ce qui conduit à des comparaisons avec un temps révolu ou à des étonnements à l'égard d'élèves qui " ne veulent pas apprendre ". L'étude de cas permet de voir comment la mobilisation sur les savoirs est traversée par l'histoire biographique des sujets mais aussi par le contexte du LP qui est plus que scolaire. Ces expériences singulières nous conduisent à proposer une typologie des formes de rapport aux savoirs et à repenser les termes sociologiques et pédagogiques du désir d'apprendre.

Digital games offer a vast range of engaging experiences, from the serene exploration of beautifully rendered landscapes to the deeply cognitive challenges presented by strategic simulations to the adrenaline rush of competitive team-based shoot-outs. Digital games enable experiences that are considerably different from a reader's engagement with literature or a moviegoer's experience of a movie. In In-Game, Gordon Calleja examines what exactly it is that makes digital games so uniquely involving and offers a new, more precise, and game-specific formulation of this involvement. One of the most commonly yet vaguely deployed concepts in the industry and academia alike is immersion—a player's sensation of inhabiting the space represented onscreen. Overuse of this term has diminished its analytical value and confused its meaning, both in analysis and design. Rather than conceiving of immersion as a single experience, Calleja views it as blending different experiential phenomena afforded by involving gameplay. He proposes a framework (based on qualitative research) to describe these phenomena: the player involvement model. This model encompasses two constituent temporal phases—the macro, representing offline involvement, and the micro, representing moment-to-moment involvement during gameplay—as well as six dimensions of player involvement: kinesthetic, spatial, shared, narrative, affective, and ludic. The intensified and internalized experiential blend can culminate in incorporation—a concept that Calleja proposes as an alternative to the problematic immersion. Incorporation, he argues, is a more accurate metaphor, providing a robust foundation for future research and design.
