Book Organic Scintillators and Scintillation Counting

Download or read book Organic Scintillators and Scintillation Counting written by Donald Horrocks and published by Elsevier. This book was released on 2012-12-02 with total page 1095 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Organic Scintillation and Liquid Scintillation Counting covers the proceeding of The International Conference on Organic Scintillators and Liquid Scintillation Counting, which was held on July 7-10, 1970 at the University of California, San Francisco. This conference was held to discuss ideas concerned with the theory and physics of organic scintillators and the use of liquid scintillation for radioactivity measurement and other analytical applications. This text discusses liquid scintillator solvents, the vacuum ultraviolet excited luminescence of organic systems, and the application of scintillation counters to the assay of bioluminescence. Also covered are topics such as scintillation decay and absolute efficiencies in organic liquid scintillators, dose rate saturation in plastic scintillators, and the mass measurements in a liquid scintillation spectrometer. The book is recommended for physicists who would like to know more about the advancements in the field of organic and liquid scintillation and its applications.

Book The Theory and Practice of Scintillation Counting

Download or read book The Theory and Practice of Scintillation Counting written by J. B. Birks and published by Elsevier. This book was released on 2013-10-22 with total page 685 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Theory and Practice of Scintillation Counting is a comprehensive account of the theory and practice of scintillation counting. This text covers the study of the scintillation process, which is concerned with the interactions of radiation and matter; the design of the scintillation counter; and the wide range of applications of scintillation counters in pure and applied science. The book is easy to read despite the complex nature of the subject it attempts to discuss. It is organized such that the first five chapters illustrate the fundamental concepts of scintillation counting. Chapters 6 to 10 detail the properties and applications of organic scintillators, while the next four chapters discuss inorganic scintillators. The last two chapters provide a review of some outstanding problems and a postscript. Nuclear physicists, radiation technologists, and postgraduate students of nuclear physics will find the book a good reference material.

Book Engineering of Scintillation Materials and Radiation Technologies

Download or read book Engineering of Scintillation Materials and Radiation Technologies written by Mikhail Korzhik and published by Springer Nature. This book was released on 2019-09-13 with total page 326 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This proceedings book presents dual approaches to examining new theoretical models and their applicability in the search for new scintillation materials and, ultimately, the development of industrial technologies. The ISMART conferences bring together the radiation detector community, from fundamental research scientists to applied physics experts, engineers, and experts on the implementation of advanced solutions. This scientific forum builds a bridge between the different parts of the community and is the basis for multidisciplinary, cooperative research and development efforts. The main goals of the conference series are to review the latest results in scintillator development, from theory to applications, and to arrive at a deeper understanding of fundamental processes, as well as to discover components for the production of new generations of scintillation materials. The book highlights recent findings and hypotheses, key advances, as well as exotic detector designs and solutions, and includes papers on the microtheory of scintillation and the initial phase of luminescence development, applications of the various materials, as well as the development and characterization of ionizing radiation detection equipment. It also touches on the increased demand for cryogenic scintillators, the renaissance of garnet materials for scintillator applications, nano-structuring in scintillator development, trends in and applications for security, and exploration of hydrocarbons and ecological monitoring.

Book Radiation Detection

Download or read book Radiation Detection written by Douglas McGregor and published by CRC Press. This book was released on 2020-08-19 with total page 1286 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Radiation Detection: Concepts, Methods, and Devices provides a modern overview of radiation detection devices and radiation measurement methods. The book topics have been selected on the basis of the authors’ many years of experience designing radiation detectors and teaching radiation detection and measurement in a classroom environment. This book is designed to give the reader more than a glimpse at radiation detection devices and a few packaged equations. Rather it seeks to provide an understanding that allows the reader to choose the appropriate detection technology for a particular application, to design detectors, and to competently perform radiation measurements. The authors describe assumptions used to derive frequently encountered equations used in radiation detection and measurement, thereby providing insight when and when not to apply the many approaches used in different aspects of radiation detection. Detailed in many of the chapters are specific aspects of radiation detectors, including comprehensive reviews of the historical development and current state of each topic. Such a review necessarily entails citations to many of the important discoveries, providing a resource to find quickly additional and more detailed information. This book generally has five main themes: Physics and Electrostatics needed to Design Radiation Detectors Properties and Design of Common Radiation Detectors Description and Modeling of the Different Types of Radiation Detectors Radiation Measurements and Subsequent Analysis Introductory Electronics Used for Radiation Detectors Topics covered include atomic and nuclear physics, radiation interactions, sources of radiation, and background radiation. Detector operation is addressed with chapters on radiation counting statistics, radiation source and detector effects, electrostatics for signal generation, solid-state and semiconductor physics, background radiations, and radiation counting and spectroscopy. Detectors for gamma-rays, charged-particles, and neutrons are detailed in chapters on gas-filled, scintillator, semiconductor, thermoluminescence and optically stimulated luminescence, photographic film, and a variety of other detection devices.

Book Neutrino Physics and Astrophysics

Download or read book Neutrino Physics and Astrophysics written by Ettore Fiorini and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2013-03-13 with total page 419 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Neutrino '80 held at the Ettore Majorana Center for Scientific Culture in Erice, was the tenth of a series of International Confer ences on Neutrino Physics and Astrophysics. It also marked the fiftieth anniversary of the first mention, by Wolfgang Pauli, of a neutral particle emitted in beta decay. The conference occurred at a very propitious time in neutrino physics: the possibility of a non-zero neutrino mass and of neutrino oscillations has obvious implications of great importance in neutrino astrophysics and cosmology, as well as in the grand unified theories. In order to encourage contacts and discussions among the various experts in different branches of neutrino physics and astrophysics, the conference was based only on plenary sessions, and mainly on review talks. Short communications were accepted only if they bore new and unexpected results which could not be covered in the appro priate review. I would like to thank the participants for their understanding of this often unpopular rule. I take this opportunity to express my gratitude to the members of the International Advisory Committee, to George Marx, Secretary of the on-going International Neutrino Committee, to the rapporteurs and session chairmen. Thanks are especially due to Antonino Zichichi, Director of the Ettore Majorana Centre for Scientific Culture, for the warm and generous hospitality extended to us, and to Alberto Gabriele and Pinola Savalli for their untiring efforts to make our stay in Erice as enjoyable as fruitful.
