Book Building the Ohio Innovation Economy

Download or read book Building the Ohio Innovation Economy written by National Research Council and published by National Academies Press. This book was released on 2013-01-30 with total page 221 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Since 1991, the National Research Council, under the auspices of the Board on Science, Technology, and Economic Policy, has undertaken a program of activities to improve policymakers' understandings of the interconnections of science, technology, and economic policy and their importance for the American economy and its international competitive position. The Board's activities have corresponded with increased policy recognition of the importance of knowledge and technology to economic growth. One important element of STEP's analysis concerns the growth and impact of foreign technology programs. U.S. competitors have launched substantial programs to support new technologies, small firm development, and consortia among large and small firms to strengthen national and regional positions in strategic sectors. Some governments overseas have chosen to provide public support to innovation to overcome the market imperfections apparent in their national innovation systems. They believe that the rising costs and risks associated with new potentially high-payoff technologies, and the growing global dispersal of technical expertise, underscore the need for national R&D programs to support new and existing high-technology firms within their borders. Similarly, many state and local governments and regional entities in the United States are undertaking a variety of initiatives to enhance local economic development and employment through investment programs designed to attract knowledge-based industries and grow innovation clusters. These state and regional programs and associated policy measures are of great interest for their potential contributions to growth and U.S. competitiveness and for the "best practice" lessons that they offer for other state and regional programs. STEP's project on State and Regional Innovation Initiatives is intended to generate a better understanding of the challenges associated with the transition of research into products, the practices associated with successful state and regional programs, and their interaction with federal programs and private initiatives. The study seeks to achieve this goal through a series of complementary assessments of state, regional, and federal initiatives; analyses of specific industries and technologies from the perspective of crafting supportive public policy at all three levels; and outreach to multiple stakeholders. Building the Ohio Innovation Economy: Summary of a Symposium explains the of the study, which is to improve the operation of state and regional programs and, collectively, enhance their impact.

Book Transformations in Higher Education Governance in Asia

Download or read book Transformations in Higher Education Governance in Asia written by Darryl S. L. Jarvis and published by Springer. This book was released on 2019-08-06 with total page 243 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book documents experimentation with various policy and governance approaches that produce structural differences in the composition and organisation of Asia’s higher education systems. In view of the wide variation in the public and private provision of higher education, it showcases how issues of access, equity and modes of participation are addressed, how institutional and programme quality are managed and how academic labour is treated and developed. The book both maps these differences and analyses the country-level dynamics, policy approaches and the problems faced by a variety of states in Asia in the race to develop competitive higher education systems. Focusing on the intersection of governance and higher education policy, it addresses the challenges facing higher education in Asia and the national responses of governments in terms of the organisation of the sector.

These investments, in turn, propelled that country's entry into technology areas previously dominated by the West. Today, several other Asian economies are exhibiting similar patterns of industrialization. Asia now boasts several economies that are active, if not prominent, suppliers of a growing number of high-tech products in the global marketplace. This report profiles 9 economies linked by an Asian identity, yet marked by economic and technological disparity.

Book Industrial Development in Singapore Taiwan and South Korea

Download or read book Industrial Development in Singapore Taiwan and South Korea written by Kai-Sun Kwong and published by World Scientific. This book was released on 2001 with total page 287 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Economic analysis of the industrial experiences of the newly industrialized economies in Asia is generally lacking in the literature. This study attempts to fill that void by providing an in-depth discussion on the economic impact of the industrial policies of Singapore, Taiwan, and South Korea in the three-and-a-half decades after 1960. Throughout the study, a broad perspective of macroeconomic development is maintained. It is highly critical of the narrow-minded objective of certain governments in maximizing the pace of industrialization at the expense of general economic well-being. A comparative analysis of the industrial experiences of the three economies also shows a diversity of constraints and processes. Singapore relied on multinational corporations, Taiwan on returned engineers, and South Korea on chaebols. There appears to be no Asian formula for industrialization. In Hong Kong, there is an ongoing debate on whether some form of industrial policy should be introduced, in view of the perception that Hong Kong is lagging behind the other economies in terms of technology. Drawing on the experiences of the other economies, the concluding chapter of the book provides an informed and balanced answer to this question. Contents: Singapore: Dominance of Multinational Corporations; Taiwan: Thriving High-Technology Industries and SME; South Korea: Government-Led Development and the Dominance of Giant Corporations; Comparison Among Singapore, Taiwan, and South Korea; Strategic Considerations in the Hong Kong Context. Readership: Researchers, policy-makers and undergraduates in economics and East Asian Studies.
