Download or read book From The Preshower To The New Technologies For Supercolliders written by Albrecht Wagner and published by World Scientific. This book was released on 2002-12-24 with total page 368 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In the year 2000, the city of Bologna was the European Capital for Culture. For this reason, the University of Bologna and its Academy of Sciences, following the Gugliemo Marconi Centenary and the Luigi Galvani Bicentenary Celebrations, decided to call attention to the major achievements of their most distinguished members, in science and technology. This invaluable volume presents a series of inventions and technological developments, some thought of and directly implemented by Professor Antonino Zichichi, others suggested and developed under his leadership, all of them having contributed to the discovery of new particles and new phenomena in the field of subnuclear physics. The book was conceived by an eminent scientist, Professor Dr Björn H Wiik, Director of Germany's most prestigious physics laboratory, DESY (Hamburg). It would not be published were it not for Professor Dr Albrecht Wagner, Chairman of the DESY Board of Directors, and Dr Horst Wenninger from CERN (Geneva), the greatest European physics laboratory.

The Handbook of Research on Advancements in Environmental Engineering creates awareness of the role engineering plays in protecting and improving the natural environment. Providing the latest empirical research findings, this book is an essential reference source for executives, educators, and other experts who seek to improve their project's environmental costs.

Book Calculating Catastrophe

Download or read book Calculating Catastrophe written by Gordon Woo and published by World Scientific. This book was released on 2011-06-20 with total page 368 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Calculating Catastrophe has been written to explain, to a general readership, the underlying philosophical ideas and scientific principles that govern catastrophic events, both natural and man-made. Knowledge of the broad range of catastrophes deepens understanding of individual modes of disaster. This book will be of interest to anyone aspiring to understand catastrophes better, but will be of particular value to those engaged in public and corporate policy, and the financial markets. The author, Dr. Gordon Woo, was trained in mathematical physics at Cambridge, MIT and Harvard, and has made his career as a calculator of catastrophes. His diverse experience includes consulting for IAEA on the seismic safety of nuclear plants and for BP on offshore oil well drilling. As a catastrophist at Risk Management Solutions, he has advanced the insurance modelling of catastrophes, including designing a model for terrorism risk.

Download or read book Solid State Physics written by Giuseppe Grosso and published by Academic Press. This book was released on 2013-10-17 with total page 873 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Solid State Physics is a textbook for students of physics, material science, chemistry, and engineering. It is the state-of-the-art presentation of the theoretical foundations and application of the quantum structure of matter and materials. This second edition provides timely coverage of the most important scientific breakthroughs of the last decade (especially in low-dimensional systems and quantum transport). It helps build readers' understanding of the newest advances in condensed matter physics with rigorous yet clear mathematics. Examples are an integral part of the text, carefully designed to apply the fundamental principles illustrated in the text to currently active topics of research. Basic concepts and recent advances in the field are explained in tutorial style and organized in an intuitive manner. The book is a basic reference work for students, researchers, and lecturers in any area of solid-state physics. Features additional material on nanostructures, giving students and lecturers the most significant features of low-dimensional systems, with focus on carbon allotropes Offers detailed explanation of dissipative and nondissipative transport, and explains the essential aspects in a field, which is commonly overlooked in textbooks Additional material in the classical and quantum Hall effect offers further aspects on magnetotransport, with particular emphasis on the current profiles Gives a broad overview of the band structure of solids, as well as presenting the foundations of the electronic band structure. Also features reported with new and revised material, which leads to the latest research

Book Models of Simon

Download or read book Models of Simon written by Kumaraswamy Vela Velupillai and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2017-11-22 with total page 200 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Herbert Simon (1916-2001) is mostly celebrated for the theory of bounded rationality and satisficing. This book of essays on Models of Simon tackles these topics that the he broached in a professional career spanning more than 60 years. Expository material on the fundamental concepts he introduced are re-interpreted in terms of the theory of computability. This volume frames the behavioural issues of concern for economists, such as: hierarchy, causality, near-diagonal linear dynamical systems, discovery, the contrasts between the notion of heuristics, and the Church-Turing Thesis of Computability Theory. There is, consistently, an emphasis on the historical origins of the concepts Simon worked with, in emphasising Human Problem Solving and Decision Making – by rational individuals and institutions (like Organizations). The main feature of the results in the book are its emphasis on the procedural aspects of human problem solving, decision making and the remarkable way Simon harnessed many tools of mathematical logic, mathematics, cognitive sciences, economics and econometrics. This long-awaited volume is an important read for those who study economic theory and philosophy, microeconomics and political economy, as well as those interested in the great Herbert Simon’s work.

Book Cognitive Semantics and Scientific Knowledge

Download or read book Cognitive Semantics and Scientific Knowledge written by András Kertész and published by John Benjamins Publishing. This book was released on 2004-01-01 with total page 282 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The book focuses on the question of how and to what extent cognitive semantic approaches can contribute to the new field of the cognitive science of science. The argumentation is based on a series of instructive case studies which are intended to test the prospects and limits of the metascientific application of both holistic and modular cognitive semantics. The case studies show that, while cognitive semantic research is able to solve problems which have traditionally been the domain of the philosophy of science, it also encounters serious limits. The prospects and the limits thus revealed suggest new research topics which in future can be tackled by cognitive semantic approaches to the cognitive science of science.
