Book excerpt: In this seminal work, renowned American biologist Ralph Vary Chamberlin offers a comprehensive overview of the theory of organic evolution and its significance in the natural world. He draws on decades of research to provide a clear and accessible account of this key scientific concept, and offers insights into its ongoing impact on our understanding of life. Book The Meaning of Organic Evolution

Download or read book The Meaning of Organic Evolution written by Ralph Vary Chamberlin and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2015-06-15 with total page 153 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Meaning of Organic Evolution No scientific law has ever been more widely misunderstood as to its content, or more thoroughly and persistently misapprehended as to its significance than has that of Evolution or Organic Descent. The problems of life are throughout largely problems of adjustment; and it is only natural, therefore, for people to suspect, fear or oppose anything strange or not mentally comprehended, inasmuch as their lack of experience and knowledge with reference to it leaves them to grope more or less in uncertainty. Hence, since the minds of most persons in the ordinary walks of life are but meagerly provided with the ideas and materials upon which the theory is based and as a consequence form the conception, if at all, with difficulty and but imperfectly, we can readily understand why Evolution, or what has passed for it, has met with such prejudice and opposition. Misunderstanding on the part of church members, in particular, has been very unfortunate; for the consequent opposition, prolonged and often bitter, has in reality been without rational justification and has resulted in much harm through hampering both intellectual and religious progress. The issues of this conflict, now so far a matter of history, in fact, attest the truth and give specific illustration of the following proposition formulated many years ago by Andrew D. White: "In all modern history interference with science in the supposed interest of religion, no matter how conscientious such interference may have been, has resulted in the direst evils both to religion and science, and invariably; and, on the other hand, all untrammeled scientific investigation, no matter how dangerous to religion some of its stages may have seemed for the time to be, has invariably resulted in the highest good both of religion and of science." The following pages are written in non-technical terms for the general reader, their purpose being briefly to explain certain aspects of Organic Descent about which misunderstanding and misapprehension seem particularly to cling. Book The Primary Factors of Organic Evolution

Download or read book The Primary Factors of Organic Evolution written by E. D. Cope and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2015-06-16 with total page 573 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Primary Factors of Organic Evolution The present book is an attempt to select from the mass of facts accumulated by biologist, those which, in the author's opinion, throw a clear light on the problem of organic evolution, and especially that of the animal kingdom. As the actual lines of descent can be finally demonstrated chiefly from paleontologic research, I have drawn a large part of my evidence from this source. Of course, the restriction imposed by limited space has compelled the omission of a great many facts which have an important bearing on the problem. I have preferred the paleontologic evidence for another reason. Darwin and the writers of his immediate school have drawn most of their evidence from facts which are embraced in the science of œcology. Weismann and writers of his type draw most of their evidence from the facts of embryology. The mass of facts recently brought to light in the field of paleontology, especially in the United States, remained to be presented, and the evidence they contain interwoven with that derived from the sources mentioned. Many of the zoologists of this country, in common with many of those of other nations, have found reason for believing that the factors of evolution which were first clearly formulated by Lamarck, are really such. This view is taken in the following pages, and the book may be regarded as containing a plea on their behalf. In other words, the argument is constructive and not destructive. The attempt is made to show what we know, rather than what we do not know. This is proper at this time, since, in my opinion, a certain amount of evidence has accumulated to demonstrate the doctrine here defended, and which I have defended as a working hypothesis for twenty-five years.
