Book excerpt: The International Workshop on "The Use of Supercomputers in Theoretical Science" took place on January 24 and 25, 1991, at the University of Antwerp (UIA), Antwerpen, Belgium. It was the sixth in a series of workshops, the fIrst of which took place in 1984. The principal aim of these workshops is to present the state of the art in scientific large-scale and high speed-computation. Computational science has developed into a third methodology equally important now as its theoretical and experimental companions. Gradually academic researchers acquired access to a variety of supercomputers and as a consequence computational science has become a major tool for their work. It is a pleasure to thank the Belgian National Science Foundation (NFWO-FNRS) and the Ministry of ScientifIc Affairs for sponsoring the workshop. It was organized both in the framework of the Third Cycle "Vectorization, Parallel Processing and Supercomputers" and the "Governemental Program in Information Technology". Book Scientific Computing on Supercomputers

Download or read book Scientific Computing on Supercomputers written by J.T. Devreese and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 279 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The International Workshops on "The Use of Supercomputers in Theoretical Science" have become a tradition at the Univer sity of Antwerp, Belgium. The first one took place in 1984. This volume combines the proceedings of the second work shop (December 12, 1985), of the third (June 16, 1987) and of the fourth (June 9, 1988). The principal aim of the International Workshops is to present the state-of-the-art in scientific high speed computa tion. Indeed, during the past ten years computational science has become a third methodology with merits equal to the theo retical and experimental sciences. Regretfully, access to supercomputers remains limited for academic researchers. None theless, supercomputers have become a major tool for scientists in a wide variety of scientific fields, and they lead to a realistic solution of problems that could not be solved a decade ago. It is a pleasure to thank the Belgian National Science Foundation (NFWO-FNRS) for the sponsoring of all the workshops. These workshops are organized in the framework of the Third Cy cle "Vectorization, Parallel Processing and Supercomputers", which is also funded by the NFWO-FNRS. The other sponsor I want to thank is the University of Antwerp, where the workshops took place. The University of Antwerp (UIA), together with the NFWO-FNRS, are also the main sponsors of the ALPHA-project, which gives the scientists of Belgium the opportunity to obtain an easy supercomputer connection.

Book An Introduction to High performance Scientific Computing

Download or read book An Introduction to High performance Scientific Computing written by Lloyd Dudley Fosdick and published by MIT Press. This book was released on 1996 with total page 838 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Designed for undergraduates, An Introduction to High-Performance Scientific Computing assumes a basic knowledge of numerical computation and proficiency in Fortran or C programming and can be used in any science, computer science, applied mathematics, or engineering department or by practicing scientists and engineers, especially those associated with one of the national laboratories or supercomputer centers. This text evolved from a new curriculum in scientific computing that was developed to teach undergraduate science and engineering majors how to use high-performance computing systems (supercomputers) in scientific and engineering applications. Designed for undergraduates, An Introduction to High-Performance Scientific Computing assumes a basic knowledge of numerical computation and proficiency in Fortran or C programming and can be used in any science, computer science, applied mathematics, or engineering department or by practicing scientists and engineers, especially those associated with one of the national laboratories or supercomputer centers. The authors begin with a survey of scientific computing and then provide a review of background (numerical analysis, IEEE arithmetic, Unix, Fortran) and tools (elements of MATLAB, IDL, AVS). Next, full coverage is given to scientific visualization and to the architectures (scientific workstations and vector and parallel supercomputers) and performance evaluation needed to solve large-scale problems. The concluding section on applications includes three problems (molecular dynamics, advection, and computerized tomography) that illustrate the challenge of solving problems on a variety of computer architectures as well as the suitability of a particular architecture to solving a particular problem. Finally, since this can only be a hands-on course with extensive programming and experimentation with a variety of architectures and programming paradigms, the authors have provided a laboratory manual and supporting software via anonymous ftp. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Based on a course developed by the author, Introduction to High Performance Scientific Computing introduces methods for adding parallelism to numerical methods for solving differential equations. It contains exercises and programming projects that facilitate learning as well as examples and discussions based on the C programming language, with additional comments for those already familiar with C++. The text provides an overview of concepts and algorithmic techniques for modern scientific computing and is divided into six self-contained parts that can be assembled in any order to create an introductory course using available computer hardware. Part I introduces the C programming language for those not already familiar with programming in a compiled language. Part II describes parallelism on shared memory architectures using OpenMP. Part III details parallelism on computer clusters using MPI for coordinating a computation. Part IV demonstrates the use of graphical programming units (GPUs) to solve problems using the CUDA language for NVIDIA graphics cards. Part V addresses programming on GPUs for non-NVIDIA graphics cards using the OpenCL framework. Finally, Part VI contains a brief discussion of numerical methods and applications, giving the reader an opportunity to test the methods on typical computing problems.

Book Energy Efficient High Performance Computing

Download or read book Energy Efficient High Performance Computing written by James H. Laros III and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-09-04 with total page 73 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In this work, the unique power measurement capabilities of the Cray XT architecture were exploited to gain an understanding of power and energy use, and the effects of tuning both CPU and network bandwidth. Modifications were made to deterministically halt cores when idle. Additionally, capabilities were added to alter operating P-state. At the application level, an understanding of the power requirements of a range of important DOE/NNSA production scientific computing applications running at large scale is gained by simultaneously collecting current and voltage measurements on the hosting nodes. The effects of both CPU and network bandwidth tuning are examined, and energy savings opportunities without impact on run-time performance are demonstrated. This research suggests that next-generation large-scale platforms should not only approach CPU frequency scaling differently, but could also benefit from the capability to tune other platform components to achieve more energy-efficient performance.

This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 405 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The present volume, with the exception of the introductory chapter, consists of papers delivered at the workshop entitled "The Impact of Supercomputers on the Next Decade of Computational Fluid Dynamics," The workshop, which took place in Jerusalem, Israel during the week of December 16, 1984, was initiated by the National Science Foundation of the USA (NSF), by the Ministry of Science and Development, Israel (IMSD), and co-sponsored by the National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA), the Office of Scientific Research of the U.S. Air Force (AFOSR), Tel Aviv University and Massachusetts Institute of Technology. The introductory chapter attempts to summarize what transpired at the workshop. The genesis of the workshop was an agreement between NSF and Il1S, signed in the spring of 1983, to conduct a series of bi-national work shops and symposia. This workshop represented the first activity spon sored under the agreement. The undersigned were selected by their respective national bodies to act as co-coordinators and organizers of the workshop. The first question that we faced was to decide upon a topic. In the past few years the field of CFD has mushroomed and consequently there have been many meetings, symposia, workshops, congresses, etc.

Book Parallel Processing for Scientific Computing

Download or read book Parallel Processing for Scientific Computing written by Michael A. Heroux and published by SIAM. This book was released on 2006-01-01 with total page 421 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Parallel processing has been an enabling technology in scientific computing for more than 20 years. This book is the first in-depth discussion of parallel computing in 10 years; it reflects the mix of topics that mathematicians, computer scientists, and computational scientists focus on to make parallel processing effective for scientific problems. Presently, the impact of parallel processing on scientific computing varies greatly across disciplines, but it plays a vital role in most problem domains and is absolutely essential in many of them. Parallel Processing for Scientific Computing is divided into four parts: The first concerns performance modeling, analysis, and optimization; the second focuses on parallel algorithms and software for an array of problems common to many modeling and simulation applications; the third emphasizes tools and environments that can ease and enhance the process of application development; and the fourth provides a sampling of applications that require parallel computing for scaling to solve larger and realistic models that can advance science and engineering.
