Book Agricultural Irrigation

Download or read book Agricultural Irrigation written by Aliasghar Montazar and published by MDPI. This book was released on 2019-11-28 with total page 172 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Agriculture is certainly the most important food supplier while it globally accounts for more than 70% of water used and contributes significantly to water pollution. Irrigated agriculture is facing rising competition worldwide for access to reliable, low cost, and high-quality water resources. However, irrigation as the major tool and determinant of affecting agricultural productivity and environmental resources plays a critical role in food security and environment sustainability. Innovative irrigation technologies and practices may enhance agricultural water efficiency and production, in the meantime decrease the water demand and quality issues. I am very pleased to invite you to submit manuscripts in agricultural irrigation which assess current challenges and offer improvement approaches and opportunities for future irrigation.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This report contains a collection of papers from a workshopâ€"Strengthening Science-Based Decision-Making for Sustainable Management of Scarce Water Resources for Agricultural Production, held in Tunisia. Participants, including scientists, decision makers, representatives of non-profit organizations, and a farmer, came from the United States and several countries in North Africa and the Middle East. The papers examined constraints to agricultural production as it relates to water scarcity; focusing on 1) the state of the science regarding water management for agricultural purposes in the Middle East and North Africa 2) how science can be applied to better manage existing water supplies to optimize the domestic production of food and fiber. The cross-cutting themes of the workshop were the elements or principles of science-based decision making, the role of the scientific community in ensuring that science is an integral part of the decision making process, and ways to improve communications between scientists and decision makers.

Book Fundamentals of Irrigation and On farm Water Management Volume 1

Download or read book Fundamentals of Irrigation and On farm Water Management Volume 1 written by Hossain Ali and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2010-09-08 with total page 578 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Agriculture is one of the few industries that has been creating resources conti- ously from nature. Sustainability of this industry is a crucial issue at now-a-days. Agricultural technologies are important to feed the growing world population. Agricultural engineering has been applying scienti?c principles for the optimal use of natural resources in agricultural production for the bene?t of humankind. The role of agricultural engineering is increasing in the coming days at the forthcoming challenges of producing more food with less water coupled with climate uncertainty. I am happy to know that a book entitled "Fundamentals of Irrigation and On-farm Water Management", written by Engr. Dr. M. H. Ali, is going to be p- lished by Springer. The book is designed to cover the major ?elds of agricultural and environmental engineering such as weather, plant, soil, water, and basics of on-farm water management. The book will be quite useful for the students of agricultural engineering. Students of other related branches of engineering s- ences, and engineers working in the ?eld and at research institutes will also be beni?ted. The book may serve as a text book for the students and as a practical hand-book for the practitioners and researchers in the ?eld of irrigation and on-farm water management. Utilization of the recent literature in the area and citation of relevant journals / reports have added a special value to this book. Considering the topics covered, engineers, scientists, practitioners, and educators will ?nd this book as a valuable resource.

Book Irrigation Systems Engineering

Download or read book Irrigation Systems Engineering written by Balram Pannigrahi and published by New India Publishing Agency. This book was released on 2011-01-15 with total page 350 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This is a text book for agriculture and agricultural engineers and will be very much helpful for the beginning students in irrigation. It is designed to guide students from a basic knowledge of soil, mathematics, hydrologic and hydraulics to the state-of-the-art irrigation system design and management. Since major and medium irrigation projects are too costly and at the same time are not eco-friendly, the major thrust of research is now being imparted on low cost and easy to construct farm irrigation structures. The primary aim of the book is to design an optimum size small scale water harvesting structure which is the farm pond mostly used by the farmers in the farms. My goal is to present the principles and concepts of farm irrigation in a simple manner to maximize the students learning, understanding and motivation. The method and order of presentation have been carefully developed and classroom tested to make this book a useful and effective teaching tool. The book will not only be a helping tool to the students and teachers in agriculture and agricultural engineering but also to all the practicing engineers, agriculturists, soil conservationists and agricultural extension workers who deal directly or indirectly with water management and other associated farm development works. However, the book cannot be used for design of complex hydraulic structures including dams and reservoi The book contains 23 solved problems, 238 short and long type questions, 42 tables, 55 figures and more than 138 references which will be immensely helpful to the students and design engineeSeveral field experimental results have also been incorporated in the book at appropriate sections to make the book interesting for the readers.

Book A New Era for Irrigation

Download or read book A New Era for Irrigation written by National Research Council and published by National Academies Press. This book was released on 1996-10-21 with total page 213 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Irrigated agriculture has played a critical role in the economic and social development of the United Statesâ€"but it is also at the root of increasing controversy. How can irrigation best make the transition into an era of increasing water scarcity? In A New Era for Irrigation, experts draw important conclusions about whether irrigation can continue to be the nation's most significant water user, what role the federal government should play, and what the irrigation industry must do to adapt to the conditions of the future. A New Era for Irrigation provides data, examples, and insightful commentary on issues such as: Growing competition for water resources. Developments in technology and science. The role of federal subsidies for crops and water. Uncertainties related to American Indian water rights issues. Concern about environmental problems. And more. The committee identifies broad forces of change and reports on how public and private institutions, scientists and technology experts, and individual irrigators have responded. The report includes detailed case studies from the Great Plains, the Pacific Northwest, California, and Florida, in both the agricultural and turfgrass sectors. The cultural transformation brought about by irrigation may be as profound as the transformation of the landscape. The committee examines major facets of this cultural perspective and explores its place in the future. A New Era for Irrigation explains how irrigation emerged in the nineteenth century, how it met the nation's goals in the twentieth century, and what role it might play in the twenty-first century. It will be important to growers, policymakers, regulators, environmentalists, water and soil scientists, water rights claimants, and interested individuals.

Book Sustainability of Irrigated Agriculture

Download or read book Sustainability of Irrigated Agriculture written by L.S. Pereira and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2013-03-09 with total page 607 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Irrigated agriculture and the use of water resources in agriculture face the challenges of sustainable development. Research has advanced our knowledge of water use by crops, soil-water-solutes interactions, and the engineering and managerial tools needed to mobilize, convey, distribute, control and apply water for agricultural production. However, the achievements booked in user practice have revealed the need for new developments in the areas of resource conservation, control of environmental and health impacts, modernisation of technologies and management, economic viability and the social acceptance of changes. The contributions to Sustainability of Irrigated Agriculture cover most of the relevant disciplines. Besides its multidisciplinarity, the different origins, experience, backgrounds and practices of the authors provide a wide, in-depth analysis of the various aspects of water resource utilization in agriculture. The papers review scientific, technical and managerial aspects, highlighting the main problems, issues and future developments. The book covers the different aspects of sustainability, including environmental, technical, economic, institutional and social ones. Advances in irrigation science and engineering are dealt with, both on- and off-farm. Special attention is paid to the different components of water quality management, to the transfer of technology, and to capacity building.
