Book Our Forest Your Ecosystem Their Timber

Download or read book Our Forest Your Ecosystem Their Timber written by Nicholas K. Menzies and published by Columbia University Press. This book was released on 2007 with total page 277 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Community-based forest management (CBFM) is a model of forest management in which a community takes part in decision making and implementation, and monitoring of activities affecting the natural resources around them. CBFM provides a framework for a community members to secure access to the products and services that flow from the landscape in which they live and has become an essential component of any comprehensive approach to forest management. In this volume, Nicholas K. Menzies looks at communities in China, Zanzibar, Brazil, and India where, despite differences in landscape, climate, politics, and culture, common challenges and themes arise in making a transition from forest management by government agencies to CBFM. The stories of these four distinct places highlight the difficulties communities face when trying to manage their forests and negotiate partnerships with others interested in forest management, such as the commercial forest sector or conservation and environmental organizations. These issues are then considered against a growing body of research concerning what constitutes successful CBFM. Drawing on published and unpublished case studies, project reports, and his own rich experience, Menzies analyzes how CBFM fits into the broader picture of the management of natural resources, highlighting the conditions that bring about effective practices and the most just and equitable stewardship of resources. A critical companion for students, researchers, and practitioners, Our Forest, Your Ecosystem, Their Timber provides a singular resource on the emergence and evolution of CBFM.

Book Rendezvous with the Wild

Download or read book Rendezvous with the Wild written by James Raffan and published by . This book was released on 2004 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: An inspiring tribute to a magnificent ecosystem. The Boreal Forest is the largest single ecosystem on the North American continent and occupies one third of the total landmass of Canada. It is as important to the planet as is the Amazon rain forest. The Boreal Forest is a living, breathing, pollutant-filtering six-million-square-mile forest covering almost 11 percent of the planet's surface, stretching from Newfoundland to Alaska. The forest absorbs and filters a quarter billion gallons of water each day and contains a large portion of Earth's non-frozen fresh water. After sixty-five million years of evolution, this ecosystem is now threatened by development and pollution. Rendezvous with the Wild is an impassioned celebration of the Boreal Forest and the rivers that run through it. Fifty-four noteworthy contributors from diverse walks of life provide: Art and photography Essays, stories and anecdotes Songs and poems Journal entries and memoirs. Some contributors express their longtime love of the land. Others tell of their first truly wild encounter with the vast northern woods. The insight of paddlers and philosophers, artists and firefighters, conservationists and forest industry workers, playwrights and scientists will entertain, inform and persuade readers that this vital wilderness needs our attention and protection now. Published in conjunction with the Canadian Parks and Wilderness Society's "Boreal Rendezvous" project.

Book Traditional Forest Related Knowledge

Download or read book Traditional Forest Related Knowledge written by John A. Parrotta and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2011-10-14 with total page 639 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Exploring a topic of vital and ongoing importance, Traditional Forest Knowledge examines the history, current status and trends in the development and application of traditional forest knowledge by local and indigenous communities worldwide. It considers the interplay between traditional beliefs and practices and formal forest science and interrogates the often uneasy relationship between these different knowledge systems. The contents also highlight efforts to conserve and promote traditional forest management practices that balance the environmental, economic and social objectives of forest management. It places these efforts in the context of recent trends towards the devolution of forest management authority in many parts of the world. The book includes regional chapters covering North America, South America, Africa, Europe, Asia and the Australia-Pacific region. As well as relating the general factors mentioned above to these specific areas, these chapters cover issues of special regional significance, such as the importance of traditional knowledge and practices for food security, economic development and cultural identity. Other chapters examine topics ranging from key policy issues to the significant programs of regional and international organisations, and from research ethics and best practices for scientific study of traditional knowledge to the adaptation of traditional forest knowledge to climate change and globalisation.
