Book Phenotyping at Plant and Cell Levels The Quest for Tolerant Crop Development volume II

Download or read book Phenotyping at Plant and Cell Levels The Quest for Tolerant Crop Development volume II written by Ulrich Schurr and published by Frontiers Media SA. This book was released on 2023-11-22 with total page 175 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This Research Topic is part of the Phenotyping at Plant and Cell Levels: The Quest for Tolerant Crop Development series: Phenotyping at Plant and Cell Levels: The Quest for Tolerant Crop Development This Research Topic aims at accelerating the discovery of crop varieties that are able to withstand environmental stresses, via the use of phenotyping approaches at the plant and cellular levels. Climate change is expected to have a drastic impact on agriculture, notably by impacting water availability, precipitations, temperatures, soil nutrients, and the incidence of diseases and pests. A better use of plant genetic resources and plant breeding are key to tackling this challenge from climate change and for food security. Many landraces and wild relatives of crops are conserved in seed and gene banks. These collections are potentially valuable for breeders, but are presently underexploited. Moreover, the contribution of the soil microbiome to enhance the performance of specific plant genotypes has been overlooked. The aim is to generate crops that are resistant against biotic stress or can tolerate abiotic stress without significant impact on their performance. Current studies in the field of sensor technologies and phenomics are mainly empirically based and do not link the phenotypic parameters to the molecular scale. Similarly, many molecular studies do not correlate their findings to the whole plant phenotype. The quantitative high throughput analysis of crop potential and behavior during stress is a form of Genotype x Environment interaction and is a major bottleneck. We urgently need to identify resilient genotypes and to understand the underlying mechanisms of this resilience. Phenotyping science is quickly developing to characterize plant behavior, it's dynamic dimensions, and to quantify features such as growth and stress resilience, which increasingly permit to link the phenotype to genetic control.

Book excerpt: Zusammenfassung: This edited volume encompasses chapters on novel and innovative research in the applications of leading digital technologies in an accessible and engaging way. By utilising cutting edge and ever progressive technology in visualization, it will enhance our understanding and application in our everyday lives. This volume shows how we can use Extended Reality, 3D animations and serious games to benefit the learner, educator, clinician, patient, parent and carer. Visualization techniques like Virtual, Augmented and Mixed Reality and show how they can be utilised to improve training and understanding of anatomy, surgery, and clinical assessment. This is covered specifically for emergency practitioners in enhancing their understanding of ECG's for potential myocardial infarction by using augmented reality. From a translational medicine perspective and pre-operative pediatric surgical planning, the benefits of augmented reality are examined as to what might be found intra-operatively from imaging techniques. Educational applications of digital technologies using serious games and Extended Reality are examined. We show how Mixed Reality can aid understanding in cellular anatomy for our learners and researchers alike. We also show how serious games can have applications in diverse areas like parasite infections and neuroanatomy education and training. Finally, from a clinical perspective, the use of 3D animations and their applications is discussed for vertebral fractures and increasing parent/carer awareness through interactive applications. Also, the use of 3D animations in cerebral magnetic resonance angiography for global education highlights the great benefits of these tools and technologies. There is something for the researcher, clinician, educator, patient, and carer as we explore novel technologies. These are applied locally, nationally and globally as we advance our understanding of the world changing influence that digital technologies have on our day-to-day life

Download or read book The Science of Time 2016 written by Elisa Felicitas Arias and published by Springer. This book was released on 2017-10-05 with total page 381 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The uses of time in astronomy - from pointing telescopes, coordinating and processing observations, predicting ephemerides, cultures, religious practices, history, businesses, determining Earth orientation, analyzing time-series data and in many other ways - represent a broad sample of how time is used throughout human society and in space. Time and its reciprocal, frequency, is the most accurately measurable quantity and often an important path to the frontiers of science. But the future of timekeeping is changing with the development of optical frequency standards and the resulting challenges of distributing time at ever higher precision, with the possibility of timescales based on pulsars, and with the inclusion of higher-order relativistic effects. The definition of the second will likely be changed before the end of this decade, and its realization will increase in accuracy; the definition of the day is no longer obvious. The variability of the Earth's rotation presents challenges of understanding and prediction. In this symposium speakers took a closer look at time in astronomy, other sciences, cultures, and business as a defining element of modern civilization. The symposium aimed to set the stage for future timekeeping standards, infrastructure, and engineering best practices for astronomers and the broader society. At the same time the program was cognizant of the rich history from Harrison's chronometer to today's atomic clocks and pulsar observations. The theoreticians and engineers of time were brought together with the educators and historians of science, enriching the understanding of time among both experts and the public.

Book excerpt: Science in Medicine: The JCI Textbook of Molecular Medicine is a collection of acclaimed articles published in the Journal of Clinical Investigation during the Journal’s tenure at Columbia University. The society that publishes the JCI, the American Society for Clinical Investigation (ASCI), is an honor society of physician scientists, representing those who are at the forefront of translating findings in the laboratory to the advancement of clinical practice. This textbook brings together state-of-the-art reviews written by the world's leading authorities, including many ASCI members. The reviews examine the molecular mechanisms underlying a wide array of diseases and disorders affecting all major organ systems. The fundamentals of the organ or physiological systems in question are present alongside the underlying genetic or physiological abnormalities that result in disease. This text illustrates the translation of basic scientific knowledge into the current practice of clinical medicine. The reviews provide an authoritative and comprehensive overview by building on known scientific concepts and treatment of human disease while exploring where these advances might take medicine over the next decade. The book is a valuable resource for medical students, graduate students, house staff, attending and practicing physicians, and biomedical researchers.

Book Progress in Cell Cycle Research

Download or read book Progress in Cell Cycle Research written by Laurent Meijer and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 278 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Now in its second year, Progress in Cell Cycle Research was conceived to serve as an up to date introduction to various aspects of the cell division cycle. Although an annual review in any field of scientific investigation can never be as current as desired, especially in the cell cycle field, we hope that this volume will be helpful to students, to recent graduates considering a de1liation in subject and to investigators at the fringe of the cell cycle field wishing to bridge frontiers. An instructive approach to many subjects in biology is often to make comparisons between evolutionary distant organisms. If one is willing to accept that yeast represent a model primitive eukaryote, then it is possible to make some interesting comparisons of cell cycle control mechanisms between mammals and our little unicellular cousins. By and large unicellular organisms have no need for intracellular communication. With the exception of the mating phenomenon in S. cerevisiae and perhaps some nutritional sensing mechanisms, cellular division of yeast proceeds with complete disregard for neighbourly communication. Multicellular organisms on the other hand, depend entirely on intracellular communication to maintain structural integrity. Consequently, elaborate networks have evolved to either prevent or promote appropriate cell division in multicellular organisms. Yet, as described in chapter two the rudimentary mechanisms for fine tuning the cell division cycle in higher eukaryotes are already apparent in yeast.
