Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book is concerned with the scientific aspects of musical sounds. It presents basic acoustics, auditory theory, and sound generation from both a theoretical and a practical view. Room acoustics, sound analysis, recording and reproduction, and sound synthesis as well as cognition are examined from the perspective of music. The work is thoroughly grounded in music, rather than physics Provides an up-to-date presentation of auditory theory as it relates to music Presents a readable account of the scientific aspects of musical sounds

Book The Science of Musical Sound

Download or read book The Science of Musical Sound written by William Ralph Bennett Jr. and published by Springer. This book was released on 2018-09-04 with total page 440 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This textbook is a product of William Bennett’s work in developing and teaching a course on the physics of music at Yale University to a diverse audience of musicians and science students in the same class. The book is a culmination of over a decade of teaching the course and weaves together historical descriptions of the physical phenomena with the author’s clear interpretations of the most important aspects of the science of music and musical instruments. Many of the historical examples are not found in any other textbook available on the market. As the co-inventor of the Helium-Neon laser, Prof. Bennett’s knowledge of physics was world-class. As a professor at one of the most prestigious liberal-arts universities in the world, his appreciation for culture and humanities shines through. The book covers the basics of oscillations, waves and the analysis techniques necessary for understanding how musical instruments work. All types of stringed instruments, pipe organs, and the human voice are covered in this volume. A second volume covers the remaining families of musical instruments as well as selected other topics. Readers without a background in acoustics will enjoy learning the physics of the Science of Musical Sound from a preeminent scientist of the 20th century. Those well versed in acoustics will discover wonderful illustrations and photographs depicting familiar concepts in new and enlightening ways.

Book The Structure of Musical Sound

Download or read book The Structure of Musical Sound written by Charles Sperry Willard Charles Sperry and published by iUniverse. This book was released on 2010 with total page 374 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Structure of Musical Sound is about science from the point of view of musical sound. It is also a book about musical sound from science's point of view. First and foremost, however, it is a science text for nonscientists. You, the reader, will be introduced to the methods of science; and you will be shown how these methods are used to discover more about musical sound. You will be an active participant in both of these quests, and as a result you will become a more "scientific" person than you might have realized possible. Parts of musical sound have scientific explanations. Examples of these parts include the rules for the formation and propagation of sound waves, the operation of musical instruments as they produce their sounds, and the acoustic conditions for good listening to musical sound in rooms and halls. The Structure of Musical Sound explains all of these scientific aspects of music. Questions are included throughout the book. They will challenge you to demonstrate your understanding of the ideas just presented. The solutions, not just the answers, to these questions are provided at the end of this book.

Download or read book Analysis Synthesis and Perception of Musical Sounds written by James Beauchamp and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2007-08-30 with total page 348 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book contains a complete and accurate mathematical treatment of the sounds of music with an emphasis on musical timbre. The book spans the range from tutorial introduction to advanced research and application to speculative assessment of its various techniques. All the contributors use a generalized additive sine wave model for describing musical timbre which gives a conceptual unity, but is of sufficient utility to be adapted to many different tasks.

Book The Science of Musical Sounds

Download or read book The Science of Musical Sounds written by Dayton Clarence Miller and published by CreateSpace. This book was released on 2015-02-26 with total page 298 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: From the INTRODUCTION. WE are beings with several senses through which we come into direct relation with the world outside of ourselves. Through two of these, sight and hearing, we are able to receive impressions from a distance and through these only do the fine arts appeal to us; through sight we receive the arts of painting, sculpture, and architecture, and through hearing, the arts of poetry and music. Undoubtedly music gives greater pleasure to more people than does any other art, and probably this enjoyment is of a more subtle and pervading nature; everyone enjoys music in some degree, and many enjoy it supremely. Sound is also of the greatest practical importance; we rely upon it continually for the protection of our lives, and through talking, which is but making sounds according to formula, we receive information and entertainment. These facts give ample justification for studying the nature of sound, the material out of which music and speech are made. The study of sounds in language is as old as the human race, and the art of music is older than tradition, but the science of music is quite as modern as the other so-called modern sciences. Sound being comparatively a tangible phenomenon, and so intimately associated with the very existence of every human being, one would expect that if there are any unknown facts relating to it, a large number of investigators would be at work trying to discover them. There has been in the past, as there is now, a small number of enthusiastic workers in the field of acoustics who have accomplished much; but it is no doubt true that this science has received less attention than it deserves, and especially may this be said of the relation of acoustics to music.

Download or read book Sound Knowledge written by J. Q. Davies and published by University of Chicago Press. This book was released on 2016 with total page 264 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: What does it mean to hear scientifically? What does it mean to see musically? This volume uncovers a new side to the long nineteenth century in London, a hidden history in which virtuosic musical entertainment and scientific discovery intersected in remarkable ways. Sound Knowledge examines how scientific truth was accrued by means of visual and aural experience, and, in turn, how musical knowledge was located in relation to empirical scientific practice. James Q. Davies and Ellen Lockhart gather work by leading scholars to explore a crucial sixty-year period, beginning with Charles Burney’s ambitious General History of Music, a four-volume study of music around the globe, and extending to the Great Exhibition of 1851, where musical instruments were assembled alongside the technologies of science and industry in the immense glass-encased collections of the Crystal Palace. Importantly, as the contributions show, both the power of science and the power of music relied on performance, spectacle, and experiment. Ultimately, this volume sets the stage for a new picture of modern disciplinarity, shining light on an era before the division of aural and visual knowledge.
