Book Science Objectives 1985 86 Assessment

Download or read book Science Objectives 1985 86 Assessment written by and published by . This book was released on 1986 with total page 40 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In 1985-86, the National Assessment of Educational Progress (NAEP) will undertake the fifth national assessment of science knowledge, skills, and attitudes in 9-, 13-, and 17-year old Americans. The science objectives have been developed and reviewed by committees of scientists and educators. The objectives presented in this document are grouped into three categories: (1) content--life sciences; physics; chemistry; earth and space sciences; history of science; and nature of science; (2) context--scientific; personal; societal; and technological; (3) cognition--knowledge; application; and integration; and (4) attitudes--toward science classes; career and educational objectives; socioscientific responsibility; science as a personal tool; value of science; societal issues; and experiences in science. A number of topics are presented with an indication of their appropriateness for testing students aged 9, 13, or 17. Ten sample questions are also appended. (GDC)

Book Valuing Assessment in Science Education Pedagogy Curriculum Policy

Download or read book Valuing Assessment in Science Education Pedagogy Curriculum Policy written by Deborah Corrigan and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2013-06-05 with total page 376 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Assessment is a fundamental issue in research in science education, in curriculum development and implementation in science education as well as in science teaching and learning. This book takes a broad and deep view of research involving assessment in science education, across contexts and cultures (from whole countries to individual classrooms) and across forms and purposes (from assessment in the service of student learning to policy implications of system wide assessment). It examines the relationships between assessment, measurement and evaluation; explores assessment philosophies and practices in relation to curriculum and scientific literacy/learning; and details the relationships between assessment and science education policy. The third in a series, Valuing Assessment in Science Education has chapters from a range of international scholars from across the globe and staff from Monash University, King’s College London and University of Waikato. The two previous books in the series examined research relevant to the re-emergence of values in science education and teaching across the spectrum of science education as well as across cultural contexts through the professional knowledge of science teaching. This third book now moves to examine different aspects of generating understanding about what science is learnt, how it is learnt, and how it is valued. Valuing Assessment in Science Education will appeal to all those with some engagement with and/or use of research in science education, including research students, academics, curriculum development agencies, assessment authorities, and policy makers. It will also be of interest to all classroom science teachers who seek to keep abreast of the latest research and development and thinking in their area of professional concern.

Book Practicing Science

Download or read book Practicing Science written by and published by NSTA Press. This book was released on 2001 with total page 69 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In this collection of ten articles reprinted from the Journal of College Science Teaching, college and university science professors show how they have used investigative learning, or inquiry-based instruction, to introduce students to the process of science. These first-person accounts demonstrate how students, including non-science majors, can learn to do science as it is done in the real world, through hypothesis building, observation, and experimental design. The higher education faculty represented in this book is committed to the investigative approach. As one contributor writes, "Would I return to lecturing in a traditional fashion? Not a chance. The excitement and energy of a room of students working in groups, challenging each other, and questioning each other is what I'll always want to see in my classroom."

Book Systems for State Science Assessment

Download or read book Systems for State Science Assessment written by National Research Council and published by National Academies Press. This book was released on 2006-01-28 with total page 249 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In response to the No Child Left Behind Act of 2001 (NCLB), Systems for State Science Assessment explores the ideas and tools that are needed to assess science learning at the state level. This book provides a detailed examination of K-12 science assessment: looking specifically at what should be measured and how to measure it. Along with reading and mathematics, the testing of science is a key component of NCLBâ€"it is part of the national effort to establish challenging academic content standards and develop the tools to measure student progress toward higher achievement. The book will be a critical resource for states that are designing and implementing science assessments to meet the 2007-2008 requirements of NCLB. In addition to offering important information for states, Systems for State Science Assessment provides policy makers, local schools, teachers, scientists, and parents with a broad view of the role of testing and assessment in science education.

This book was released on 1995-12-21 with total page 272 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Americans agree that our students urgently need better science education. But what should they be expected to know and be able to do? Can the same expectations be applied across our diverse society? These and other fundamental issues are addressed in National Science Education Standards--a landmark development effort that reflects the contributions of thousands of teachers, scientists, science educators, and other experts across the country. The National Science Education Standards offer a coherent vision of what it means to be scientifically literate, describing what all students regardless of background or circumstance should understand and be able to do at different grade levels in various science categories. The standards address: The exemplary practice of science teaching that provides students with experiences that enable them to achieve scientific literacy. Criteria for assessing and analyzing students' attainments in science and the learning opportunities that school science programs afford. The nature and design of the school and district science program. The support and resources needed for students to learn science. These standards reflect the principles that learning science is an inquiry-based process, that science in schools should reflect the intellectual traditions of contemporary science, and that all Americans have a role in improving science education. This document will be invaluable to education policymakers, school system administrators, teacher educators, individual teachers, and concerned parents.
