Book excerpt: Popular perception still persists that science and mysticism do not and cannot mix; they belong to two very different worlds. In light of recent developments, particularly in the sciences, the fourteen original papers by international scholars from the East and the West argue that this perception can no longer be sustained. It is becoming more and more evident that the reach of the human mind extends far beyond what can be captured either by the senses or narrow, rigid logic and rationality. Below and beyond the world of science there exists a serene, real world of intuition and insight which is a rich mine of knowledge and wisdom. Recent studies and research show that mystics of all times and all places have had a special access to this world. Today the consensus is gradually emerging that both scientists and mystics share the common mission of being seekers of truth, and their findings are complementary rather than contradictory. This volume also points out that this constructive blending of science and mysticism can serve as an effective catalyst for a meaningful and enriching East-West dialogue.

The book on the one hand contrasts general traits of Eastern, Buddhist thought and Western, Greek thought. The result is a careful examination of basic questions that offers both broad implications and concrete specificity in its approach. The book itself is an instance of East-West dialogue. Independently of each other both authors had previously engaged in serious cross-cultural studies. The Japanese Inagaki had researched Western science and philosophy, then written in Japanese comparative studies of Japanese thought. The North American Jennings had researched Japanese theology. They brought these backgrounds together, dialoguing with each other until the present study emerged. Several creative Japanese thinkers, as well as important Westerners, are taken up. The study follows the lead of many Eastern impulses, but it also critically utilizes Western methods. Contemporary thinking on religious plurality is carefully examined. This new study is a must for those interested in philosophy and theology in general, and East-West interaction in particular.

The injunction in the Book of Psalms to "worship the Lord in the beauty of holiness" addressed a tradition that has comprehended holiness primarily in terms of ethical righteousness--a conception that has strongly influenced Western understandings of religion. As the author points out, however, the Greek forbears of Western thought, as well as many Eastern traditions, were and are more broadly concerned with the pursuit of beauty, truth, and goodness as ideals of human excellence, that is, with the "holiness of beauty." In this work Martin describes a philosophical stance that should prove to be most productive for the dialogue between aesthetics and religion. Beginning with the treatment of beauty and holiness in Hebrew, Greek, and classical Christian thought, the author traces the emergence of modern theories of aesthetics and religion in the Enlightenment. He then outlines the role of aesthetics in the theories of religion proposed by Otto, Eliade, van der Leeuw, and Tillich, in the cultural anthropology of Geertz, and in the thought of Santayana, Dewey, Whitehead, Heidegger, and Wittgenstein. In a global context Martin explores the relation of aesthetic theory to religious thought in the traditions of India, China, and Japan and concludes with reflections on the viability of modern aesthetic and religious theory in the light of contemporary cultural and methodological pluralism.
