Il s'agit là d'une altérité dûment constatée, d'une altérité de fait, mais qui se double aussi, sur un plan théorique, d'une distance prescrite, axiologique, d'une opposition de droit, qu'on ne se lasse jamais de rappeler. Science et Politique, qui déjà différaient par ce qu'elles sont objectivement supposées être, se démarquent peut-être davantage encore par la vertu de l'idéal ségrégationniste qui leur est subjectivement assigné. Mais l'ajout d'une barrière supplémentaire, en quelque sorte morale ou juridique, n'est bon qu'à faire naître un sentiment d'étrangeté et de défiance. A quoi servirait de dresser palissades et miradors entre une Science et une Politique qu'une frontière naturelle isolerait déjà ? Pourquoi le mystère dédoublé d'un être en quelque sorte prescrit, qui serait aussi bien une manière de devoir-être constaté ? Soit donc le péril d'une confusion qui peut s'établir à tout moment entre Science et Politique, l'espace qui les sépare pouvant aussi bien être aboli par accident, à l'étourdie, qu'anéanti par un permanent désir adultère de liaisons dangereuses. A la prose ordinaire d'une liaison née dans le feu d'une action sans pensée s'ajoute en effet la poésie maudite d'une liaison favorisée par une volonté durable de transgression. Science et Politique seraient comme deux aimants que l'on aimerait repoussés par leur dangereuse attirance mutuelle, mais qui se seraient affranchis de la légalité physicienne.

This colloquium was an idea of Professor Roshdi Rashed who initiated this field of studies in France some years ago, and proposed "Sciences and Empires" as one of the main research programmes for the The project to organize such a colloquium was a bit REHSEIS group. of a gamble. Its subject, reflected in the title "Sciences and Empires", is not a currently-accepted sub-discipline of the history of science; rather, it refers to a set of questions which found autonomy only recently. The terminology was strongly debated by the participants and, as is frequently suggested in this book, awaits fuller clarification.

The AIDS pandemic was not only catastrophic to the health of millions worldwide but also fractured international relations, global access to new technologies, and public health policies in nations across the globe. As he struggled to get ahead of the disease, Piot found science does little good when it operates independently of politics and economics, and politics is worthless if it rejects scientific evidence and respect for human rights. Piot describes how the epidemic altered global attitudes toward sexuality, the character of the doctor-patient relationship, the influence of civil society in international relations, and traditional partisan divides. AIDS thrust health into national and international politics where, he argues, it rightly belongs. The global reaction to AIDS over the past decade is the positive result of this partnership, showing what can be achieved when science, politics, and policy converge on the ground. Yet it remains a fragile achievement, and Piot warns against complacency and the consequences of reduced investments. He refuses to accept a world in which high levels of HIV infection are the norm. Instead, he explains how to continue to reduce the incidence of the disease to minute levels through both prevention and treatment, until a vaccine is discovered.

As a reaction against this view, an opposite «sociological» approach downplayed the usual virtues of scientific knowledge (such as logical rigor and empirical adequacy) as artificial imageries that cover the actual nature of science, that is a social product submitted to all the kinds of social conditionings and compromises. A more balanced view is badly needed today, when technoscience is permeating all aspects of our civilization and wise persons understand that we cannot survive without using science and technology but at the same time we need to steer their development in view of the real benefit of humankind. We must investigate how science, technology and values are legitimately interconnected and, in particular, how the discourses of ethics, politics and religion can enter a fruitful dialogue with science. The essays presented in this volume offer a valuable contribution to this interdisciplinary study.
